This Roland TD-1K is a very well made drum kit. All the components come very well packaged and it's a great price! The design is compact and the quality is excellent. The 4 pads are all the same diameter. I added the Roland V-Drum mesh head snare drum pad and bracket to my purchase, to get a more real feel snare drum. Playing this instrument has given me a better perspective on the technology. It is a very practical instrument for practising at home, but the pedals do feel very different to the real thing and the hi-hat is a little quiet. That said, I would recommend this quality electric kit to my students. Great for small spaces and great design!

Best entry level set for electronic drumming

I was looking to get back into drumming which had been quite a few years. I wanted something that was quiet unlike an acoustic set and allow me to practice without disturbing the household. This did just that. The sound of the kits are excellent and better than other brands in the same price range. It also is very compact if space is an issue. The only issues I have is getting used to the foot pedal for the kick drum and the sound of the ride cymbal could be improved. But overall a very good set.

This kit is supposed to be entry level. I think it's an excellent all round kit - end of. It's responsive with brilliant samples. Cymbals can be choked and the dynamic range of kit isn't based on one sample at different volumes, but a number of samples per drum. It's a great space saver too and is relatively quiet when played with headphones, so won't annoy the neighbours! All round, a superb kit which I highly recommend.

Excellent everyday and practice kit
25 October 2015

I brought this kit, because my neighbors/apartment didn't appreciate my acoustic kit. I looked at Yamaha models, but I settled on this one because of the mesh snare, and the ability to add another cymbal and upgrade the bass drum trigger. It was easy to out together and I was surprised at how responsive the pads are. The only adjustment I made was to the pad sensitivity. I had to increase the sensitivity on the hi-hat and cymbals. I wasn't sure what to expect since I have always had acoustic kits, but it gets the job done. Now I can practice anytime, because the kit is quiet. I like the coach mode, and the fact that I can hook up my iPod and play along. I recommend this kit, or the TD-1K, to anyone looking for an affordable kit that doesn't compromise features.

Great Instrument to Rekindle My Earlier Attempts at Drum Playing
5 January 2021

I had tinkered with playing drums about 10 years ago, having been inspired by some fantastic drummers I had worked with professionally as a keyboard player. But life got in the way and I never took it beyond a basic level. But lockdown got me thinking: maybe I could have another go and get a regular (and much needed) workout at the same time! :-) But I needed a kit where noise would be controllable, in my music room where space is at a premium and which I could actually record both audio and MIDI with (when I get good enough). The noise and space issues meant that, sadly, an acoustic kit was a non-starter, so it had to be an electronic kit. Having looked at several manufacturers I plumped for this Roland TD-1K kit. It's pretty basic in many respects but is perfect for my current needs. I may upgrade the snare to a mesh version later (to replace the rubber-surfaced one), which I am told gives a much better feel. But I'm having a whale of a time playing the TD-1K. I'm making extensive use of the built-in metronome to work towards precision time-keeping, having fun practising various drum exercises and rudiments and occasionally playing along with various recordings, for a song-length experience, and trying out various pattern changes within song structures and the occasional fill. This kit is really good for all that and more. I'm so glad I plumped for this kit. If I had a bit more space in the room I may have got the next level up but I have no regrets. I can't recommend this kit strongly enough!

Great Product but, not exactly what was advertised.

I've been playing the drums for just under a year now. I have become quite skilled and can play most things I want to learn. I have had this kit for a couple of weeks and I have to say, for such a low budget price, it's great! There is only one bad thing I can say about this drum kit. It's quite loud. Even though on the website it says it's quiet. I live in a terrace house meaning I am joined with 2 houses either side of mine. We asked neighbors if they could hear it and they said yes, it's not too loud for them but they can hear it. Also, people downstairs say it's very loud. Since it would be louder upstairs anyway, we put it downstairs to see if it was any quieter but no still quite loud. If I take play it through an amp or speakers and I put them on the highest volume, the drum sound of the drumming on the pads is louder than the actual sound. But it's not too much of a problem. This review is quite detailed because I have quite a lot of things to say about the kit. There are 15 kits on the drum kit. Personally, my favorite kit is number 2 because it's the closest sound to an acoustic rock kit. I also like 11 because it's like a drum and bass kit so if you were going to cover a new pop song or drum and bass song it would be perfect for that. There are definitely more pro's than con's on the drum kit. I wouldn't recommend using it for concerts since it doesn't sound very good through speakers. I've used 3 different types of speaker. A Roland Micro Cube GX Amplifier, a small Bluetooth speaker and a good sound bar. You do need to have them quite loud otherwise you won't be able to actually hear the kit but when you have it loud, the crash and the kick can be quite distorted. Overall, the drum kit is good for beginners and for professionals who just want a kit to practice with at home. 4/5.

Great place to begin, Endless Fun!

I think this kit is fantastic, very user friendly and so much fun to mess around with. Easy to play for hours with lots of cool sound variations. I was surprised to see how sensitive the pads are and how responsive, it has a very natural feel. Great features in a compact footprint, and I love that it's so easy to change the volume. Overall an excellent addition to any arsenal and a great companion to acoustic sets, or a great alternative if your living situation doesn't allow for tradition.

Great sound quality and customer service
19 January 2020

My husband wanted this drum set for Christmas but it was on back order. Steve at Sam Ash called to ask what I wanted to do. He had scoured all of the stores to locate the set, but there wasn't one available for Christmas delivery. We had a really nice conversation, and I decided to wait. It was a very good deal! When the set was ready to ship I got another call from Steve and the set actually arrived early. My husband plays it almost everyday and the sound quality is great! I highly recommend this set for beginners and recommend Sam Ash. Great customer service.

Not what it used to be.

It used to come with a mesh snare instead of just a rubber one, a pair if sticks, a drummers throne and a pair of headphones as well as one additional cymbal. Also, this old rack design is unstable, a pain to assemble and it's very limited on the drums adjustment angles. It's a great sounding set but terrible for teardown and setup to play out with. The newer pole style rack is foldable and easy to breakdown and setup. Roland needs to retire and discontinue this awful old rack design.

Solid kit that does the job and performs well

This HD-1 is the classical Roland electronic drum (V-Drum) kit that is well built and plays well enough. It is very versatile. There are much more technical ones that are not necessarily much better. It folds up to fit in the back of a medium sedan, will stand fully rigged in the back of most 4x4s. The major advantage it has over acoustic (traditional) drum kits is that it is quiet enough to not disturb other occupants of the building - acoustic kits can easily disturb an entire street! The player hears a pretty full drum sound over headphones - especially if they are good ones. Cheap 'phones = cheap sound! Some will sneer at e-drums, and there are indeed some terrible kits out there, but this is not one of them. It has good pedals, good pads & cymbals, a 'mesh' snare for realistic feel and very low noise, and just enough drums and cymbals for a basic kit. There is a selection of kits in the 'brain' and there is one that morphs the hi-hat into a regular cymbal and uses its pedal for twin-bass drums, electronically. Is it fully re-programmable? no. Is it easy to set up? yes . Portable? yes. Fun? oh yes! I'm not a drummer, but I was a drum tech way back when, and I bought these for my daughter.
