I used to feed my Shih-Tzu as a pup Royal Canin because it was highly recommended. I loved the idea every dog (breed) is different with different needs. Like, Shih-Tzus are different especially with chewing etc. I Never looked at the ingredients -because I thought since it was so popular it was the best thing for her. I took time & really looked at the ingredients & I couldn't pronounce most of it. I looked up the stuff I couldn't pronounce & it wasn't good--I wouldn't eat this stuff. So, my Shih-Tzu is 11 now Healthy. I feed her Only ALL NATURAL food. I thought Blue Buffalo was great so she's been on it awhile, then I seen ALL the Nasty stuff they are putting in it even though its NOT listed on the ingredients. I took her OFF that also. How come Royal Cainin ... MoreI used to feed my Shih-Tzu as a pup Royal Canin because it was highly recommended. I loved the idea every dog (breed) is different with different needs. I began feeding the Royal Canin Shih Tzu food to my Shih Tzu adult females about a year ago. The small sized kibble was easy for them to consume and highly palatable to my finicky eaters. Perhaps the thing that impressed me most was that I could feed my adult dogs less quantity to maintain the desired weight and condition (i.e. I could feed 3/4 of a cup of this food when I would have to feed 1 cup of a different brand to achieve the same results). This communicates to me that the food has a higher nutrient density in a form that is highly digestible to my dogs. The frequency and size of stool is smaller (less waste- another sign of highly digestible content) and my dogs are beautiful and healthy. I have a 3 year old 28 pound mixed breed dog(part Shih Tzu) who tends to be sensitive and picky! Because he is not a pure breed Shih Tzu I had never tried it. He hates most kibble and tends to swallow them whole. He even swallowed your medium breed whole. If you find one that he can crunch and will he doesn’t eat much. So..Due to the different kibble shapes and sizes y’all offer I tried all of the breeds that he has in him except Shepard dog. He wouldn’t touch the Yorkshire Terrier one and he has that in him too. The English bulldog was too big and he really wasn’t that into it to sit and eat 2 cups a day. The Shih Tzu was a big hit! And even though they are tiny he was trying to chew them!!! And even though they are tiny he was trying to chew them!!! I was pleasantly shocked! He consistently went for those over all other kibble. I hope he does well on this and continues to like it. His fur grows really fast and maybe this will help make his coat healthier and shinier especially when we grow it out in winter. I went and bought a 10 pound bag. Wish they came in 15 pounds too.
I've been feeding my dog RC for exactly a year now and he's been doing great! His stools are perfect and he will sometimes go only once a day. This food keeps his coat luxuriously soft and he eats every last bite. I like that there is glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate added, to help protect his small joints. He is 6 years old and the vet said he is in excellent condition.I do wish that the food was provided in a standard 4-5lb bag like most manufacturers do. Since the 2.5lb bag last only a couple of weeks and the 10lb lasts too long and ends up going stale and possibly rancid.
My Shih Tzu liked it very much. She gets very excited when she sees me scooping out her portion. The kibble is small enough to fit in her tiny mouth, and she has no trouble chewing on it, which usually happens with other dry foods. I don't like that it contains chicken by-product meal, but the rest of the ingredients seem fine to me. The only downside was that my Shih Tzu had loose stools for 4-5 days while she got used to the new kibble. After that, her stools were back to normal.
My Shih Tzu cross Cavalier seems to really like this food. She was on the RC mini puppy which she liked so I switched her to RC mini adult when the time came but she didn't really like that one. I have had no issues after switching to RC Shih Tzu Adult dry dog food.
This was recommended by our vet, who said that our healthy 10 yr old dog was getting "too much protein", which shocked me! I decided to take the advice, and he actually LOVES the food. He seemed like he didn't love the other (very expensive) food we'd been getting, but he snarfs this down every time. I'm sure it is better for him too, since it has just the right balance of all the right ingredients.
When we got our shih-tzu 4 years ago he was on a terrible diet. We switched him over to Royal Canin and haven’t looked back. We got a new puppy in October of 2019 and have also fed him Royal Canin. They have regular bowel movements, this may be tmi but they’re not as smelly or big compared to other dogs I’ve seen on another diet. Not shih tzu related but we tried many diets with out cat. When we found her she had runny bowels and after trying several brands we decided to try Royal Canin and she no longer has any issues. Can’t recommended this brand enough as all three of my fur babies love it and do really well with it! My only complaint is the size of the bags. Wish they would sell bigger ones.
Good my shih tzu loves and tolerates on her tummy with no issues. I’m past we had two other shih tzu we fed high quality very expensive food to but they both had issues couldn’t keep food down took to vet and he said could be grain related changed to grain free of the old brand still no change but once we found Royal Canin we’ve had no issues! So thankful happy dog happy life lol
