This is an absolute piece of junk. I bought it as I got sick of using a manual auger and it constantly cuts out in soil that's not particularly tough. The second it touches a rock or you push down on it slightly it'll cut out, making it a chore to even put in a single hole. On one test, I had it cut out after taking a bit of grass off the top (got about 1cm down). It's been raining here too, so the ground isn't even that tough. This was with the kickback protection turned off as well - it just keeps activating 'override protection' mode. Maybe I got a dud or something? I don't know, but I'll be returning it and buying something petrol powered.

The auto-cutout is useless and kept cutting out at the slightest pressure caused by a rock, root, hard soil or maybe just for fun. Have to wait 5 secs every time to start again. It might work in fine sand but with normal soil or clay it is a waste of time. Took 30 mins to get one 300mm deep hole dug - returned it for a refund and bought a fence digging bar instead - dug 11 holes in less than 15mins each with that and got some exercise at the same time. Avoid. Return & refund with Bunnings was straightforward.

Great little unit - especially for confined space like against walls. You will definitely need to take your time with hard clay type soil. I had to turn the kickback protect off as it was stopping every 10 secs. I used it to dig 8 x 450mm post holes. I will be getting a 9Ah battery for this before the next round of post holes. Hopefully it will give it more juice. Overall very happy with the unit. Handles do however feel like they are going to snap if too much force is applied - Luckily it has a good warranty period.

I am using it to improve typical Canberra hard clay and rocks ground. I dig holes between mature trees and fill the holes with soil improver or compost and fertiliser. The auger bit that comes standard is ok for soft soils but not so useful on hard clay. Fortunately the drive shaft is the industry standard 20mm for light post hole diggers. I bought a couple of low cost narrow auger bits which handle hard ground much better and sometimes work past buried rocks and building rubble. It is a pity that Ryobi does not provide a section of auger bits. The stop on hitting obstructions feature makes it much safer than most one person post hole diggers. Bought this one in addition to the Ryobi 9 pack. Its great in dark soils and we developed the technique of augering, the pulling straight up, then augering again. This removes the soil so you dont have to keep digging the same hole. Tried it in Australian clay to no avail and only got 30mm in before lock up. I noticed that 30mm hole the other day had rainwater in it, when it rained two days ago. not even the water would penetrate. You know when you buy a new power tool and it doesn't quite live up to what you thought it might do? This is NOT that tool! I had spent hours yesterday digging holes with a mattock and shovel for planting shrubs and was almost weeping by the end of the day. This morning I zipped off and bought this (after much tearful research last night) and have planted reduce twice as many shrubs with no pain. It's an absolute gem. As a (fit and healthy) grandmother I am comfortable and confident using it in my own. I'm using my existing 4amp battery with it and it's absolutely wonderful. If you think you need it, you probably do!
Bought this about 10 days ago to plant small native trees and shrubs on our clay/mixed soil property in Central North Vic. Has been a gem so far. It does not work on the really hard dried-out compacted clay which is basically rock but even an excavator recently could not do much with that. Any other kind of soil that has been ripped/worked/mixed/composted has been easy going. Battery got me through at least 20 plants at a time and to double the depth that I needed within seconds. Note that the battery/charger does not come with the tool which caught me out at the time of purchase. Very happy.
This 18V Ryobi post hole drilling auger exceeded my expectations, as it performed as well as similar petrol engined tools that I have used in my past as a Carpenter/Tradesperson. My greatest surprise was how many holes at maximum depth of this tool in clay soil with a mix of small rocks was possible with a fully charged 5amp battery. I highly recommend this tool.
The Brushless Planting and Digging tool is amazing. It's really easy to use straight out of the box. It's made digging holes in the garden easy as anything, instead of back breaking effort. It has an automatic kickback stop, so you don't hurt yourself if you hit something under the ground. Would definitely recommend for anyone who does a lot of digging in the garden.
I'm using mine to install a concrete fence on a rough rural 3km boundary. This is heavy stuff. They have enough grunt to rip your arm, but the compact top is far less rough on your body, when it spins. It effectively has two torque levels: nancy and gruntly. It absolutely requires a 5ah battery. The main caveat is : do not rip them out of the hole by their weak plastic handles. Also, do not throw your crowbar onto them. Mine has lasted 75 holes, so far, and i expect to get to 100 easy. Far better than petrol fumes up your nose and heavy gear.
