Cuts okay, build quality not great.

Saw cuts okay but build quality isn't great. Laser pointer bracket broke and backing plate bent so couldn't make square cuts. Used for 18 months. Got a refund under warranty. If you need something for moderate use spend more money and get a better brand.

Requires constant re-calibrating to achieve a remotely straight cut. And despite numerous efforts I cannot get the laser to point consistently in line with the cut. Great if you need it for high volume, low precision cutting but not the right tool for anything precise.Pros: Easy to assemble, lightweight, easy to transport, cuts good, smooth slide action.Cons: Lots of plastic, "90 degree" setting is more a guideline than a rule, very difficult to get the blade straight.

Great drop saw
16 January 2022

I bought this for building a deck and a fence and it has been great for a relatively cheap drop saw. Keep a small brush handy to get the dust off the laser and you’ll be fine.My only negative comment would be that as you tighten the clamp to set the cut angle the angle shifts slightly. It would only be a problem if you needed ultra accurate cuts but if that’s your need you should up your budget anyway. This is plenty accurate enough for most jobs

I thought we had progressed to words for instructions over time but words failed me. (Or at least they failed the manual).I stumbled my way through and guessed as best as I could and finally had what looks to be the tool ready to use.And then it began. I was able to cut wood. What a feeling - I felt like a man.The next job was to use the stopper as I needed to do some trench cutting. Here I hit my next hurdle. First understanding how the stopper worked (as the manual has it's challenges), but then I found that the blade wouldn't cut from the start. It started the trench 25mm or so from the edge of the wood.I scratched my head, went back to the manual and tried different interpretations of the instructions and looked at the pictures from different angles - but failed to overcome this challenge. Defeated and knowing that it's most likely my fault with not understanding the manual correct (I was always hopeless at Pictionary) I called Ryobi support. They were quite helpful, and used words - and didn't make me feel like less of a man which was nice. The end result they said was that this was a design flaw, no way to fix it and to return the unit.Returning the tool that made me feel alive and powerful - nope - this wasn't an option. Not to be defeated I realised that the built in laser was the answer to my problem! I ended up turning the wood around (rotating the wood 180 degrees) and then sawed from the other side. This made the task longer than needed and it was disappointing but I was able to overcome this obstacle thanks to the amazing laser that allows you to line things with the precision of a docking space shuttle. However things were not all that it seemed. Maybe after 90 minutes of operation (Not all at once - that would be madness - a bloke needs he's breaks!) the laser failed. I come from an I.T. background so I know that the classic fix is to turn it off and back on again. Strangely this manoeuvre which seems to fix countless PC problems failed to do anything with the laser. Thankfully the manual did have some words in it when it came to troubleshooting but this also failed me. The laser unfortunately was faulty and I was powerless to fix it.So through no fault of my own my wife still got to prove me correct that I shouldn't have bought this thing. My wife being right - I guess that is the true feeling of many a real man. :'-(With the universe against me (or at least a poorly designed machine that didn't take into account the backwards travel needed if the stopper was used, plus a defective laser) meant that this unit was returned under warranty. Thankfully I still have all my fingers which I've been able to use to type this review.I do plan on buying another unit - however I'm going to bide my time to find out what is quality and probably moreso a day when the wife is away so I can sneak a new one back into the shed.In short:- Manual could be greatly improved upon.- Faulty laser that can't be easily replaced that failed was disappointing- Great job at it's primary job of cutting wood

OK for a while then suffers mechanical failures.

This saw is great up to the point it fails. I’ve had two now. Both have had the blade protector fixing fracture sending the metal components flying at speed around the workshop. First one was replaced under warranty, second did the same after a few months of hobbyist use. Now the motor has expired on that one too leaving it dead and out of warranty.I will be replacing this item with a different brand. Not sufficiently robust for the money.

Perfect for DIY

Well priced and does the job well. Bought with stand as well. Built square and true deck, fence, shed, tree house and a multitude of other projects with it. You can be really precise as long as you calibrate with test cuts, builders square and adjustment screws. Don’t expect click 0, 45deg angles etc to be accurate without calibrating.Don’t know why people buy for laser, it’s just a gimmick and can’t see it during the day anyway. Waste of time, never use it, don’t trust it. So don’t buy it for that. The clampIs also pretty useless, but I don’t bother to use them anyway, too slow, so no biggy.Cuts up to 100mm high (just), so I’ve cut Macracarpa sleepers fine. But you you’re DIYer this is perfect and can be lifted relatively easily in and out of shed etc. Can’t complain really it’s been a super solid performer for my DIY needs.

Rubbish
13 September 2022

Awful. Bought one and returned as the knob for the pin to lock the saw came off. One of the support brackets screw was completely stuck and unable to be freed. Obviously it’s an issue as the staff member didn’t even bother to question or look at it and was given a replacement. Opened replacement and returned again as the same issue with the bracket occurred. Replaced with an AEG for a couple extra hundred bucks but well worth it. It’s so much more solid and there is no wobble or give at all. Precise cuts and just feels so much stronger. To be fair I didn’t even get to use the Ryobi but it felt very loose and wobbly.

This is not a toy
9 November 2021

I had an old drop saw which I wanted to upgrade so I purchased the Ryobi mitre sawThe manual which comes with lots of pictures which is very hard to follow, you have to have a degree in Egyptian Hieroglyphs, you tube is much easier to follow in setting the up the saw .The person who assembled the blade in the factory never had to take one off, there is NO way you can remove the blade with the crummy spanner that comes in the box, you have to use a socket set. The new blade I put on was an 80 tooth as I want to cut picture frame moldings which it does very finely.Unfortunately the safety release mechanism snapped off the 2nd time I used it causing me to return the saw from where I purchased it from with no problem, these things happen.

Unreliable. Fine for light use.
6 November 2021

Had this at work for cutting aluminium, and the LASER stopped working pretty much immediately, a few months later it wouldn't turn any more and was stuck on a 45° angle.I pulled it apart and found there was a ball-bearing on a spring which had gotten caught somewhere, and needed to be removed before the saw would work again, making it much harder to set the angle. This is a cheap and plasticy saw, which is fine for light use, but even then, I'd get the non-sliding one so there's less to go wrong.
