Great All Around Versatile Shoe

I have at least 8 or 9 pair of these shoes. Most were purchased the first year they came out (4-6 years ago?) and the most recent a couple of weeks ago. The great tread on the first one's purchased is 50-75% worn off from trails in and around Glacier National Park, Banff, Jasper, Alaska, Yukon, and Northwest Territories. At 76 with a fake knee and hip I am no longer a trail runner but I can still use them for backpacking, hiking, and everyday wear. What's neat about these shoes is that they are super easy and fast to dry on your feet. So if you are forced to wade a stream, hike through dew covered brush, or get caught out in the rain, they will quickly dry on your feet as long as you are not foolish to wear cotton socks.I am 6-6, 235 lbs, wear a size 14 narrow, ... MoreI have at least 8 or 9 pair of these shoes. The tread is soft and very grippy so it may wear a little faster than a usual running shoe or hiking boot if you use them on pavement or concrete. They are great for rocky, rough, mountainous terrain. A wonderful side benefit of this tread is it doesn't pick up little grains of sand, small rocks or very much mud so they keep your living quarters a lot cleaner than the usual running shoe or hiking boot.

Great at first but quality dwindles over time.

I loved these for the first year. They were comfortable, lightweight, and breathable all while providing toe protection.I first must say i started wearing these as everyday shoes. I'm guessing that is not what they are intended to be. If you walk on concrete sidewalks the treads immediately wear away. As an everyday shoe it is starting to stretch out and becoming very uncomfortable. What was a comfortable shoe has now become one of my least comfortable shoes. If you are buying for tail running it probably will be fine. If you are doing anything on concrete or hard surface just know the tread goes away fast. Also this tread style doesnt do great on wet surfaces.

Great fit… all condition comfort!

Great favorite shoes… because they fit my feet like a glove. Ran cross country and track in high school. So, I was always looking for good athletic shoes. Started walking/running two miles each week before winter arrived. But, I use these shoes for everyday wear. They aren’t designed for concrete… soles will wear quickly, but I do use them primarily for biking and exercising, martial arts, yoga… in the home. Even the non gore Tex version gives me some protection from wind and light rain when riding. Wish they had more casual shoes that have this type of fit and durability. Bought four pairs this year… since they were discounted. So, I’ll be okay for the next few years.

I’m gutted

After doing some slightly obsessive research, I settled on the speed cross 5 gtx because of their seemingly impressive specs. Unfortunately, they’re possibly the most uncomfortable shoes I’ve ever bought. I’m a size 12uk and whilst the length is ok, they’re extremely tight in the middle. They feel a bit like the plastic ice skates you hire at the ice rink. I’ve tried to grin and bear it hoping my feet/shoes will adjust but I just get blisters every time: I can’t wait to take them off.The lace design is cool however most of the pressure is at the very top.The heel area is very solid and uncomfortable due to the junction where the goretex lining is. Which is the cause of my blisters and has already showing signs of wear/fraying after only approx 100km of use. ... MoreAfter doing some slightly obsessive research, I settled on the speed cross 5 gtx because of their seemingly impressive specs. The goretex works great. They look awesome but ultimately I feel like I’ve bought an expensive sports car with all the extras, but gives me chronic back ache to drive. These shoes aren’t cheap and I blew my budget on something I can’t wear so will have to find an cheaper alternative :(Wish I could go back in time and spend the money on something else or return/exchange them.Help would be hugely appreciated to find a solution but if not my wife will just remain mad at me for spending so much on something that sits in the closet.

TLDR: I bought these puppies as an introduction into Salomon products, and I’ve been impressed. Generous cushion for the heels w/out bulk. Very adaptive tread pattern for various terrain. This forces you to stop, pull it all out, tighten, and continue on. Also forces you to pull the ankle closure fairly tight. The heel rise is comfortable, but leads to rolling the ankles more easily. As the miles go by and the ankles naturally become wobbly, not rolling over the front/side of the feet becomes a challenge in these shoes.Could be user error here, but at the end of bagging two peaks and running 14 miles, this genius sustained a grade II ankle sprain. I’ve always used low trail runners and have never come close to this issue before. The tread is soft enough that it wears away fairly quickly on hard surfaces.

Every Fall, I buy a pair of Speedcross GTX for winter running. The aggressive tread is perfect for running on snow covered roads. In the Spring, I use them for trail running during mud season. Those 4MM lugs bite into the terrain, but are not noticeable on your footpad, which is often the case with a heavy lugged shoe. You will feel the lugs on pavement, as this is a narrow shoe with a high heel (30MM) height, but nobody would use this as a road shoe. It is quite staple, considering the heel. If you are familiar with the standard Salomon fit, you might want to consider sizing up half a size. I have a narrow foot, and the Speedcross fits me better than any other Salomon. My wife wears a size nine in most Salomon’s, but cannot get her foot into a size nine Speedcross. So definitely try before you buy, or make sure you can send them back. While not as nimble feeling as my Adidas Terrex, the Speedcross is a more comfortable shoe and, while heavier than my Speedgoats, certainly last longer. I’ve heard the Goat 5 is more durable than my Goat 4s, but I’m hesitant to try another Speedgoat, given the cost per mile. It is hard to beat the Continental tread on the Terrex, as it seems to last forever. The Terrex is another very narrow show, and some find it an ankle biter, so again, try before you buy.

The pair of Speedcross 5’s were bought as a replacement for my XT-6 S-Lab. My expectations were low due to the missing features of my previous Salomon’s, but found the Speedcross to be a solid choice although Salomon could make a couple improvements. I tried on the Sense 4 and Speedcross 5 at my local REI and immediately loved the feel of the Speedcross. The shoes hug my feet and have a nice soft footbed. No rubbing, or fit issues other than the heel cup being looser than my XT-6’s. The lugs are very aggressive and are made for soft ground and mud which works out well for creek running I prefer, and I do try to keep off asphalt, concrete, and packed dirt due to fast tread wear. My biggest complaint is the lack of pronation control and stability. First time out I rolled my ankles 3 times and again at least once the next 3 runs, but I am beginning to feel more confident in my foot placement and stride and have reduced the frequency of a potential injury. I never had this issue with the XT-6, but the Speedcross forefoot sole is much narrower and less stable. I am used to the 0 drop feel of the XT-6, but have notice there is more strain on my calves in them compared to the Speedcross where I feel the burn in my quads instead. I believe the increased to drop results in the insoles sliding around and bunching up under my toes. The Ortholite insoles had to be replaced with a pair from my Nike trainers, but I have read of people taping or gluing the stock pair in place. Overall, I like the shoes but feel the improvements could make them a great soft ground running shoe.

As with all the speedcross shoes I’ve had was able to wear them up the hills straight out of the box.Differences (between v4 and v5), and my thoughts/experience:- Lug size increase/change. Seems to make the shoe much more aggressive, particularly going downhill (on rocky/slippery dirt trails).- Shoe feels much higher off the ground than what I recall with previous versions. Definitely is, and by a lot, when put next to my other versions, but of course the lugs on them are well worn down.- Higher collar at the back. Read some reviews saying this caused rubbing for some, I haven’t experienced that.- Got the GT version this time (first time out of 5 pairs). Women get all sorts of colour combinations. I had to settle with the pretty boring black/phantom combination.Note: Much credit to Athlete’s Foot. Not only was the purchase price for these the lowest of anywhere I looked, price included delivery and they arrived the next day.

My second pair had a lace eyelet tear through and the pocket to hide the laces on the tongue seemed not to keep the laces laces tucked as well as my first pair. This my second pair was nearly to the end of their life with very little tread left when these issue occurred so they were pretty tired. Build quality between my two new pair seem identical no differences that I can tell.

The SpeedCross 1-4 were perfect for narrow feet...

Updates in the SpeedCross 5 sadly leave us narrow/ low volume feet people seeking a new line of shoes - it's a much bigger shoe! I'm sure the wider/ higher volume fit with stretchy toe box works well for most technical trail runners with normal to wide feet, but so do the majority of other shoes out there - including many other Salomon styles. I know the "squeaky wheel gets the grease," and I've seen hosts of complaints about the SpeedCross being too narrow for most, BUT most shoes are too wide for me and there are very few shoes out there for the low volume narrow fit mens foot. I hope the 6 returns to the classic fit and that the 5 either dies or turns into a new line with a different name. I spent thousands of dollars trying shoes before I found the SpeedCross 1 over a decade ago, and both myself and my feet would prefer to not go through that search process again. Salomon, what shoe (yours or otherwise) would you recommend for those that the the SpeedCross 5 updates fail? My only positive about the shoe is that the larger lugs seem like they'll hold up better on rocky trails.
