There are only 2 gripes I have about these shoes. The first is the fit: they are about a half size too long- I usually wear a 13 and that is what I ordered. There is almost a half inch of space at the toe, which is a bit more than there should be. The second is the wear on the bottom sole. I have worn them for almost a year and a half, and certainly am not gentle on them, so perhaps that is why the grip wears the way it has. I would wager I have a solid 9 months of wear left on this pair, which is very good, all things considered. The upper and Gore-Tex lining are still intact. They are certainly a tough shoe.Concerning comfort, they are fantastic in that regard. Besides the extra toe space, they fit very well, and break in took maybe a day. These shoes are good on many levels, but not-so-good on several other levels. First the good. They look good. They are super comfortable, and the sinch string in lieu of traditional shoelaces is awesome and slipping them on is fast. (I may never go back to laces again.) And the Speedcross is exceptionally lightweight. But here's the bad. These shoes are advertised as 'waterproof breathable' and with 'excellent grip.' First: These shoes are supposed to be 'Trailrunners' and they are, except for the fact if you ever step on a wet rock, wet tree limb, wet wooden bridge, wet sidewalk... anything wet, these shoes are ice skates. And second, they are definitely not breathable at all...as they claim them to be, but there are pretty high in 'the waterproof' department, ... MoreThese shoes are good on many levels, but not-so-good on several other levels. I am a huge salomon fan, boots, shoes, cross country ski boots, you name it, but won't be buying these again.

The fit for these shoes are perfect for me.Basketball also beat up my ankles as a young guy, so my winter hikes also see me wearing a pair of Salomon Cross Hike 2's with their mid boot design to prevent ankle sprains when I'm hiking more steep rocky bits and less trail terrain and want the boot height and stiffer torsion sole but a very similar sole that stands up, grips well and again mud and dust wash right off with all synthetic materials.I have fussy feet and Salomon has given me happy feet again and makes it easy to get the steps and stay really active!

TLDROverall: 9/10For price: 9/10Comfort: 10/10(insulated, cushioned, tightens well, great traction)Weather resistance: 9/10 (For a trail runner quite good)Durability: 8/10(insole and lace cord issues)These are some really great comfortable trail runners that can easily perform just as well as sturdier hiking shoes and boots with tons of extra comfort, these shoes are gore-tex which realistically doesnt mean a whole lot but in heavy rain with little actual time soaking these shoes can resist a lot of bad weather, took a 5ish hour walk in the rain avoiding submerging and my feet came out mostly dry. These are well insulated and wont keep you terribly warm especially in the toes and/or when wet but will totally resist enough while out on trail to keep you going, ... MoreTLDROverall: 9/10For price: 9/10Comfort: 10/10(insulated, cushioned, tightens well, great traction)Weather resistance: 9/10 (For a trail runner quite good)Durability: 8/10(insole and lace cord issues)These are some really great comfortable trail runners that can easily perform just as well as sturdier hiking shoes and boots with tons of extra comfort, these shoes are gore-tex which realistically doesnt mean a whole lot but in heavy rain with little actual time soaking these shoes can resist a lot of bad weather, took a 5ish hour walk in the rain avoiding submerging and my feet came out mostly dry. These are well insulated and wont keep you terribly warm especially in the toes and/or when wet but will totally resist enough while out on trail to keep you going, price wise these are excellent. In terms of comfort I havent tested these with a backpacking load but on around 15 pounds of gear they perform just as well as with zero added weight but I do not have info on the support given high amounts of gear. Tested in all seasons and performs well in all but in continued exposure to snow they tend to get wet after an hour or two. The insoles on these are excellent but mine ended up creasing after around a year of use but salomon sent me replacements for free which was nice, they can also be ordered on the ortholite website if you wanted to pay for them. Customer service is excellent, the durability issues come primarily from fraying on the tighetning cord used to "tie" them but it hasnt broken so far after 2 years of pretty consistent use on trail, and some issues with those insoles. The body of the shoe has no holes or rips and there is plenty of lift from the sole. Overall quite good and well worth the money.
I took these shoes to Kauai recently and they held up great. I did a lot of hiking on various terrains, including mud and volcanic rock. In muddy terrain they did well, they didn’t slip off my foot and they were easy to clean off. On packed dirt, they were nice and grippy even while slightly damp- I half expected to start slipping on the looser areas of dirt like gravel on an incline, these shoes gripped the ground well. On the volcanic rock, they endured lots of nooks and crannies, sharp edges. For me, that was the real test because volcanic rock can be very sharp and would easily shred up a cheaper made shoe, especially the outsole and tip. I got them wet a few times crossing a number of rivers during a hike in Hanakapi’ai. The outside stayed dry, the inside did ... MoreI took these shoes to Kauai recently and they held up great. When I got home, I left them outside for the night to dry and by morning they were only slightly damp, I put them on anyway and they felt fine even with the slight dampness. No funky smell from the water exposure. The shoes were also very comfortable right out of the box, no breaking in or stretching was necessary. I would buy these again in a heartbeat! Awesome, durable shoes!
Love the Speed Cross......My Salomon Story - Following many years of baseball/softball - I ended up with plantar fasciitis, to the extent that I stopped playing both sports. While at work, after sitting down for 15 minutes, it would take at least 50 steps to feel somewhat comfortable walking again - not to mention the pain following a full nights sleep and taking that first step. I "happed" across my first pair of Salomon shoes at Cabellas. I had tried on the Adidas trail shoe and the Salomon - the Salomon shoe was on sale and felt 100% right. I went with the Salomon, within two weeks time, I no longer had an issue with the plantar fasciitis. I even "ditched" my golf shoes and only wear a pair of Salomon trail shoes on the course in lieu of a traditional golf shoe. Since my initial entry into the Salomon shoe line, I have purchased the winter Gortex line (both trail and boot), multiple Speed Cross (including Speed Cross and Speed Cross Gortex), Alpha Cross as well as the Pulsar. Loving this brand - Last Christmas, I purchased for my wife the Speed Cross 5, Predict Hike (Gore Tex) and the Cross Hike Mid (Gor Tex). Now she is hooked on the Salomon brand as well! I know this product well and can tell you the benefit it there!
These shoes are decent for hiking in but will not be truly trail running in them. The drop is too high and heal much too large to feel stable when moving quickly. I definitely wouldn't cross over between street/hard path with these...way too hard.In addition I found the rubber to feel somewhat "greasy" on bare rock and roots. I just don't feel confident in the grip on varied terrain and you don't get a very good feel of the ground. They say mixed terrain, but it should say mud or soft dirt only. That said the upper is nice, I really like the speed lacing system, so in that regard they are comfortable. They seem well made. The large heal leads to really great traction downhill especially like a hiking boot would as long as not on bare rock.If you are a forefoot striking runner I'd advise looking for something else, you probably won't like these.Overall I'd say they fall under the category of light hiking shoes and not so much trail running. I hoped that as a "legendary" shoe they would fit the bill, but they really are a niche shoe in my opinion (sloppy mud). I should have looked at other reviews more closely and stuck with my Saucony Peregrines. If I could return them or exchange them I would, but unfortunately it seems that Salomon does not offer a satisfaction guarantee, and since I bought them from Salomon I'm probably stuck with them. Perhaps a more moderate shoe-like Salomon product might work better, but I'm not going to chance it unless they want to try and win me over with an exchange. Their policy doesn't look promising though.
This is my 4th pair of Speedcorss GTX shoes and I cannot wear them out other than the soles. I really need the waterproof and the traction is great. I purchased these for a Spartan Trail Half Marathon in West Virginia and honestly, I pulled them out of the box, put them on, and put in 14.6 miles with absolutely no issues, blisters, or foot pain. I love these shoes. There are starting to be lots of other shoes in the trail market, but, the extra ankle stability, grip and tight fit make it a "no consideration" purchase. My only grip would be they are a bit tight (every pair has been) in the toebox. Less chance of snagging a wider fitting shoe on rocks or roots. That is just my opinion, so I will live with the tight-toe box.
My wife and I usually find ourselves trail running/hiking on rocky terrain especially in Maine and were recently looking for a trail shoe that would accommodate this type of terrain. We are big Salomon fans and after constantly reading and hearing nothing but really good things about the Speedcross, we decided to get a pair each. After a dozen or so outings we are so happy with this choice! This shoe feels so solid and substantial while being light and looking really nice. I am looking forward to the summer and trail running and hiking in Maine and New England where rocks are abundant and part of the landscape and we won’t have to worry about whether are shoes are up to the task. We have found the Speedcross. Thank you Salomon!
I have used Solomon exclusively for the last ten years for multisport events. I just completed the 2024 280 mile multisport Iceland Coast to Coast Race and the Speed Cross GORE-TEX was the right choice. Though an aggressive tread for the mountain bike stages, the design came in handy for stream crossings, hike a bike and staying warm in very wet and cold conditions. My partner was using standard mountain bike shoes but his feet were very cold and numb most of the day. Even after getting completely wet, the GORE-TEX acted like a wet suit and my feet warmed up quickly while others had very cold feet all day. The design is exceptional for stream crossings where the water runs quick and the bottom is suspect. Last, absolutely unbeatable for the trekking/running portions ... MoreI have used Solomon exclusively for the last ten years for multisport events. The design is exceptional at keeping snow, sand and other debris out of the shoe. Well done across the board.
