I have 7 pairs of Salomon hiking boots and shoes - so this review is in no way a reflection of the quality or comfort of other Salomon products on which I have put hundreds if not thousands of miles. This is specifically for the X Ultra 4 Gore-tex. Purchased the shoes ahead of a 9 day trip to Iceland. Normally, a few days of breaking in is enough. However, the actual insole of this shoe is SO narrow, that it is supplemented by what appears to be comfortable and squishy support on each side of the arch. What it actually did was bruise my arch on the first day of our trip. I ended up limping for the next few days in my Chacos (with wool socks, it was a look) and finally my foot was ok by day 5. However, I am returning these. The plus sides - the lacing system is ... I travel full-time in an RV, visiting every corner of nature I can get to. My ankles have always been a giant disappointment, so I’ve been rocking a pair of Salomon’s tall, heavy, stiff hiking boots forever. They’re not designed for all applications, though, and I’ve been desperate to find a comfortable, lightweight, grippy, and supportive pair of hiking shoes.I’ve tried all the other brands, and I’ve been giving very expensive hiking shoes to goodwill for many years. Always going back to my heavy mountain boots. Then I found the X Ultra 4 Gore-Tex. I originally purchased them in the mid, thinking my ankles would never tolerate anything less. What I discovered was the contagrip on the soles of these shoes is so good at it’s job, my ankles barely even come into play for stabilization or slippage. Simply put, when I plant my foot somewhere, I have absolute confidence it’s staying where I put it and holding tight until I release it. For example, I hiked The Narrows in Zion NP in these shoes, and even in a rushing river, this sole did not let me down. This feature alone has changed the way I hike forever. My safety, and thus my confidence, is through the roof in these shoes!Other features I love: It wears like a tennis shoe and is light enough and flexible enough for daily wear, which I absolutely do. It is fully waterproof, as in, I have walked miles through tall wet grass and through downpours and still had dry socks when I got home. Miraculously, though entirely waterproof, my feet do not sweat in these shoes the way they do in almost every other shoe I own. I have never seen a waterproof yet breathable shoe, but the X Ultra 4 GT somehow manages both. The toe shield is tremendous without ever making my toes feel hemmed in. I have never had a blister in these shoes. I am forever a fan of the speedlaces, and I love how fast I can put these shoes on and be ready to walk out the door. The only two things I can think of that these shoes don’t do is keep my feet warm and resist stains. At the end of the day, I bought these shoes for function, not fashion and if it’s warmth I’m after, I change socks.I’ve easily got 300 miles on this pair, over all imaginable types of terrain, and though I’m back to purchase a second pair, there’s not a single thing wrong with my originals. A little red staining from miles of red dirt in Moab, a few scuffs from rock crawling in Acadia, and a light dinge overall that speaks to the many adventures these shoes have carried me through, but are otherwise none the worse for wear.I hope Salomon never stops making this shoe.

My fiancé bought these for me a year ago to have a good all weather hiking shoe but these run too big and honestly not comfortable in all the travels we’ve done. I prefer my Sorel (cold terrain) or Merrill (wet terrain) over these. My foot measures 10” and the order size says 9! I’ve always worn 8-8.5 depending on brand, we ordered 8.5 which was too big and the 8 in return feels like 9-9.5 with heel slipping and the tongue always slides to side. I highly recommend trying these on in store before buying to avoid the back & forth. I’ve only worn these because I feel bad for how much he spent. He likes his shoes but they’re an older model. I’m currently looking for an all weather high top version for Iceland, we’ll see what I find. 2 stars for durability, style and ... I have walked in them twice now without injury or sores. They are not wide across the toes. There are no laces. The pull cord to tighten them restricts how much the shoe can open so it is a struggle to get the foot in. The same cord dangles once tightened. I don't get where I'm supposed to lodge it as there is no space between shoe and foot anywhere. But they are comfortable with two pair of socks, so far. They seem to be pretty supportive too and have made the walks easier and faster, so that is good. The price was scary, but when I see the prices charged for trainers, I suppose it isn't that bad. I would recommend Salomon reconsider what a wide shoe is and make a last with more room across the foot. But so far I am glad I bought them but I doubt they will last 10 ... I wanted to love these shoes, as I have gone through three pairs of X Ultra 3s, which fit like a cushy cradle. Unfortunately, the X Ultra 4s are very different and are, for me, unwearable. They are very narrow and pinched at the arch -- painfully so -- and when I removed the insoles I could clearly see how much narrower they are than the Ultra 3s. There is also less cushioning everywhere: on the bottom (below the insole), on the tongue, and on the collar. The collar rises higher than on the X Ultra 3s, just exactly to the point of rubbing the ankle bone. And, finally, they are stiff and seem to have very little "give." I have bought and tested three sizes of these shoes with a variety of socks and have with reluctance concluded that I must look for different shoes. ... Salomon had a great, and very popular, shoe with the X Ultra 3, and it's disappointing to see what they have done with the 4s.
This is the fourth pair of this model. I loved the first two pairs I bought some years ago. And in all cases I have found the soles brilliant for walking on all kinds of surface. However the uppers although robust seem to have been reduced in quality of fit. My third pair became ‘baggy’ and felt more like loose slippers. However I persisted and bought this fourth pair. Again the uppers do not feel as well made or comfortable as the first two. The quick fit laces do not seem to close as securely and there is some pressure on one side of my ankle. I have not experienced this before. Have you changed your supplier? I just feel that quality of the upper has been reduced - probably to cut costs!
I've worn nothing but salomon shoes for hiking for 30+ years. When my x-ultra gtx shoes gave up the ghost I didn't shop around, I ordered these. Only they've been "improved". The laces pattern on the new model has shifted higher on the foot. In consequence, the lace doesn't come over the toes anymore, so the shoes fold and cut right where my toes meet my feet. Ouch. At the top, the higher lacing reduces the opening and makes it harder to slip in my foot, especially as I have high arches... a longer lace might have helped. The rear of the shoe is lower than it used to be and the mushy fabric offers no support, so watch those ankles on the downhill. All in all, poor design and fit; the materials feel cheaper than the previous generation but I can't comment on durability as I am returning these. I now have to look for my perfect hiking shoe elsewhere :(
I purchased online, having owned quite a few pairs of Salomon runners in the past I thought I knew what I was getting. I was a little concerned that they fit a smidgeon bigger and the interior fabric seemed very 'slippy' so that socks may not let my feet stay in place in the shoe. But I laced up and went on a long walk and had zero issues. Same comfort I'm used to. Added bonus, I wore these in a massive downpour and my feet stayed 100% dry. Overall quite happy, one star off because it seems like every time I buy a Salomon shoe I have to get a different size than last time apparently anything from a 6-7.5 in the past. I probably won't buy their shoes online anymore but they still may be my first try if I am shopping in person and can try them on. But this particular ... I received my X Ultra 4s in April 2023. In less than 2 months of moderate wear the soles had worn smooth and the ankle cushioning disintegrated. These were a replacement for another pair on which the same ankle cushioning wear had occurred within a matter months. Unfortunately because my original purchase was over 2 years ago, Salomon will not offer any warranty on this latest pair of shoes and seem to think it acceptable that a pair of £150 hiking shoes, last less than 2 months. If you're looking for a pair of shoes to wear to the supermarket for your weekly shop, these are comfortable (while they last) and look good, but if you what you need is for a quality hiking shoe that you can actually go hiking in, steer well clear. I used the size chart and it showed I was exactly a 7. I even looked on Salomon's site. The shoe was too long and too wide. I had purchased it on sale and with points. Phoned the store and got the sales price, points applied, a return label and how to get the rest of my credit once they received my shoe and it will be applied to my second purchase. This show is so comfortable, I almost kept the larger pair fearing that the smaller might be too small but it's perfect in width and length. I am puzzled how just half a size can vary so much in width as well as length. No big hikes in them yet, just road walking and they are perfect. Stiffer than a runner but then I expect it to be for the trails. No breaking in required!
