Disappointed and feeling cheated

I bought the shoes on Zalando last year. Within a few months of usage, the shoe started showing some signs of wear even though I didn't use it so much. I was using it for weekend hikes near Berlin (flat land terrain with normal paths). I assumed that I was not taking care of the product well enough because my friend's shoe (Salomon X Ultra 3) was good even after a couple of years. It was only on his recommendation I bought Salomon X Ultra 4 GTX but it's already in an almost unusable state, with only very normal usage. As a student who bought these very expensive shoes, I feel disappointed and cheated!!!At first, I thought perhaps I did something wrong. Many customers have been facing the same issue. One thing I liked in the shoe is its grip, it's pretty good but the material quality is not so great (1 year lifetime for a 150 euros shoe?? a reputed company such as Salomon can do better than that). Also, I'm not so sure about the GTX. I used the shoe in the drizzling rain a few times and I ended with wet socks. Also, the breathability is not great - after a 15km hike during winter, my socks are already wet from my own sweat.I really wish this shoe was as good as its predecessor. I'm with an expensive shoe in hand now but not feeling great due to its current state!!!

I purchased these shoes to use as my go to hiking shoe. Initial impression: loved them. The fit, the comfort, the style were all on point. Wore on a few shorter woods walks and they did well. I was super stoked on my purchase. But then I went to Utah and explored multiple nat'l parks & put in decent miles each day - these shoes were nothing short of a headache. The tongue does not stay in place what-so-ever. Constantly slides down & is beyond uncomfortable! I had to stop every 20 steps to pull them up & readjust. On both shoes. I was so frustrated hiking in these that I almost ended up barefoot. This was crushing - my liking to this shoe is close to minimal. The tongue situation definitely overrides any of the positives of this shoe. Do yourself a favor and do not ... MoreI purchased these shoes to use as my go to hiking shoe. Finally! A great low hiking shoe!

What I discovered was the contagrip on the soles of these shoes is so good at it’s job, my ankles barely even come into play for stabilization or slippage. Simply put, when I plant my foot somewhere, I have absolute confidence it’s staying where I put it and holding tight until I release it. For example, I hiked The Narrows in Zion NP in these shoes, and even in a rushing river, this sole did not let me down. This feature alone has changed the way I hike forever. My safety, and thus my confidence, is through the roof in these shoes!Other features I love: It wears like a tennis shoe and is light enough and flexible enough for daily wear, which I absolutely do. It is fully waterproof, as in, I have walked miles through tall wet grass and through downpours and still had dry socks when I got home. Miraculously, though entirely waterproof, my feet do not sweat in these shoes the way they do in almost every other shoe I own. I have never seen a waterproof yet breathable shoe, but the X Ultra 4 GT somehow manages both. The toe shield is tremendous without ever making my toes feel hemmed in. I have never had a blister in these shoes. I am forever a fan of the speedlaces, and I love how fast I can put these shoes on and be ready to walk out the door. The only two things I can think of that these shoes don’t do is keep my feet warm and resist stains. At the end of the day, I bought these shoes for function, not fashion and if it’s warmth I’m after, I change socks.I’ve easily got 300 miles on this pair, over all imaginable types of terrain, and though I’m back to purchase a second pair, there’s not a single thing wrong with my originals. A little red staining from miles of red dirt in Moab, a few scuffs from rock crawling in Acadia, and a light dinge overall that speaks to the many adventures these shoes have carried me through, but are otherwise none the worse for wear.I hope Salomon never stops making this shoe.

Light, cushioned, good grip
14 August 2022

I bought these for a recent trip to Newfoundland, where I knew I'd be doing lots of walking in towns and hiking on trails and rocks. These shoes worked great for all terrain and had good grip on the rocks. I find them super comfortable, although slightly stiffer than I might have liked in the arch. (I'll note that I have a fairly narrow heel and a high arch. I buy flexible neutral running shoes.) To fit like a glove, they'd need to be a bit narrower throughout but I can compensate by choice of sock. I love how light and cushioned they are, since I find most hiking shoes and boots too heavy and clunky. I find them aesthetically pleasing and they were just fine out for dinner on the trip too.Based on some of the other reviews, I'll be paying close attention to how ... MoreI bought these for a recent trip to Newfoundland, where I knew I'd be doing lots of walking in towns and hiking on trails and rocks. I usually take a 9-9.5 but I bought an 8.5 in these. Another woman was buying the same ones at the same time for her upcoming trip to Iceland; she usually takes 8.5-9 but bought an 8. Great shoe - once you've figured out what size you need.

Not a great fit - painful to wear
22 September 2022

I have bought two different sizes of the X Ultra 4 Gore-Tex shoe. The first pair was way too big and the second pair fitted ok size wise, but was soooo uncomfortable around the arch support. I kept thinking, is it me? This feels really painful... Then I thought, it's only on my left foot, maybe the left shoe/insole is faulty? And then I read the review of "Ontario95" and I couldn't have agreed more with every single word this customer had written. Yes, they are very narrow and pinched at the arch -- painfully so! And the back of the shoe is very low, to the point my heel feels like it's slipping out. Needless to say both pairs are being returned. A real shame, as I very much liked the look of these.

Not thrilled
2 January 2023

It’s my first pair of goretex Salomon’s and while the waterproofing capability is perfect, the design of this shoe is lacking. The collar of the show itself was raised from the last pair of x-ultras, and it rubbed TERRIBLY against my ankle bone. I was bruised for a week and it actually hurt to walk in them. I’m not sure if they’re broken in finally or if I just stopped lacing them tightly. Also, as a lot of other reviews said- the tongue keeps slipping to the side. It makes it quite difficult to lace the shoes up and tuck the quick laces in. If these issues could be remedied it would be a fantastic shoe. I also ordered a pair of the non-waterproof x-ultra’s so I’ll find out about that soon.

Pinched arch and other woes
18 September 2022

I wanted to love these shoes, as I have gone through three pairs of X Ultra 3s, which fit like a cushy cradle. Unfortunately, the X Ultra 4s are very different and are, for me, unwearable. They are very narrow and pinched at the arch -- painfully so -- and when I removed the insoles I could clearly see how much narrower they are than the Ultra 3s. There is also less cushioning everywhere: on the bottom (below the insole), on the tongue, and on the collar. The collar rises higher than on the X Ultra 3s, just exactly to the point of rubbing the ankle bone. And, finally, they are stiff and seem to have very little "give." I have bought and tested three sizes of these shoes with a variety of socks and have with reluctance concluded that I must look for different shoes. ... MoreI wanted to love these shoes, as I have gone through three pairs of X Ultra 3s, which fit like a cushy cradle. Sizing + break-in, then great!
11 July 2021

I was given this product from Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion. Once I got the right size in the Salomon X Ultra 4 and broke them in, I’ve come to really like them! They are super lightweight, but feel supportive and durable. The beefy sole and reinforced rubber toe gives good protection. I definitely expect these to last for the long haul. The outsole grip is outstanding on varied terrain and does great on steep, rocky downhill. I like the quick-lace system for efficiency, however I wish the lacing started closer to the toe, as it feels disproportionally tight over the mid foot when cinched. Additionally, the toe box is pretty roomy, if that is something you do/do not look for. So far a bit hard to keep the lace length tucked in once tightened, ... MoreI was given this product from Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion. Probably other ways you can secure this. For me the X Ultra 4s were quite stiff to start and definitely required a breaking in period. After several shorter hikes I’d now be confident wearing these for longer adventures. So far I have used these in dry conditions, but love the Goretex waterproofing aspect. Overall I’d recommend the Salomon X Ultra 4- just choose your size accordingly and give yourself some break in time before your big journey.

The downside of being waterproof...
31 July 2022

I bought these about 10 months ago to replace a pair of hiking trainers I'd worn as my go to shoes for everything over c.7 years. These came up with excellent reviews and were really comfy to wear when I tried them on. Comfort wise they are light, supportive and fit very well so have had no breaking in period - the toggle is also nifty. However I noticed that my feet were getting very clammy with poor skin condition. I eagerly escaped to flip flops the last few months with no foot issues but now the cooler weather is setting in I'm returning to closed shoes with the same issue - whether mild or wintry the weatherproofness does the job stopping outside moisture getting in but at the expense of no breathability / moisture wicking. At the price they cost I'll have to ... MoreI bought these about 10 months ago to replace a pair of hiking trainers I'd worn as my go to shoes for everything over c.7 years. Used to be a great shoe but quality has really gone down
29 October 2022

I had these shoes for a long time, really loved them. They were starting to get worn so I invested in a new pair of these and the summer version (none waterproof) in 2020. The summer ones were amazing and still are 2 years later. These ones quickly deteriorated, especially in the heel where the fabric started falling apart leaving me with blisters and holes in so many pairs of socks! So I went back to MEC and returned them, bought another pair hoping that they would be better as the design had been updated. But no, after a few months the same holes in the heels. Very disappointing because Solomon's used to be my go-to shoes, were always so great for my wide-ish feet!
