This review is primarily based on the experience from two moderately long hikes with a light (~20 lb. pack). The good:1. Waterproof for sure! Hiked 16 miles in a steady rain/wet trail and my feet were dry. 2. The outsole lugs are at an ideal depth for mixed terrain consisting of dirt, mud, or light snow. 3. The outsole grip on slippery surfaces is excellent. 4. The shoes are light weight. The not so good: 1) Lack of torsional stability. Hiking 16 miles on a hilly section of the North Country Trail in PA and 14 miles on the Hickory Creek Wildness Trail in PA tested the torsional stability of this shoe. The lack of torsion control results in the foot being constantly twisted as well as rotating within the shoe. This results in sore feet as well as blisters on the lateral side of the big toes. A first ever for me. As such, the last miles on these long hikes were not pleasant. 2. Because the foot rotates (twists) so much within the shoe, the lack of a traditional lacing system that extends further forward to the tip of the toes exacerbates the problem.

Have had these hiking shoes for six months, very satisfied with them for day hiking and daily wear. Excellent for groomed trails and quite good for somewhat rougher terrain as well. Wore them once on a five-hour hike over very rocky trails; managed fine, but that was probably pushing the limit. They are extremely comfortable and secure on the foot. Am not a big fan of the one-pull lacing system mostly because it's not so easy to tuck the pull-lace into the otherwise convenient tongue pocket designed for that purpose; and I do wonder what I'll do when/if a lace breaks. On sizing - my feet are pretty standard width-wise, but I really don't like footwear that feels tight or too snug. The size 11 regular were in that too snug category, but the 11-wide version fits ... MoreHave had these hiking shoes for six months, very satisfied with them for day hiking and daily wear. (My XA Pro 3D shoes were not waterproof but they did have excellent wet traction - so I am hopeful that these shoes do).I would have returned these shoes if I could but I am way past the 30 day window. I am going to add some Superfeet inserts to get more arch support and add my own tab to the elastic stow pocket.Summary: Very good initial quality. No arch support. Terrible lace stowing system. Good underfoot rock support. Waterproof - remains to be seen.

First of all, I have worn nothing but Salomon hiking shoes for the past 5 years, racking a respectable amount of miles in both my old Salomon X ultra leather/gtex (2020) and in my 4D Quest. They were both so comfortable that you forgot you were wearing hiking boots. But they wore out and I needed a new pair. But it never stops to surprise me how the shoe companies change their models. I thought I was buying essentially the same shoe as in 2020, but these were the opposite of comfortable. When the foot and shoe flexes on push-off -phase, the top material flexes sharply and presses on top of the toes on every step. The material on top of the shoe is just too crinkly and inflexible to allow a smooth motion. I can't imagine putting them on ever again. Also, just goes to show, that when you find a great pair of shoes, buy another pair soon as they probably go and change something up. It's disappointing as I don't like to change the shoe brands when I find what works.
Went with a "3" hoping to save anyone with less than perfect feet from ordering and returning these shoes. Undoubtedly, OutdoorGearLab and others would not put these shoes in "top pick" territory if not a great hiking shoe. They even list "speed lacing system not for everyone" as a "con" to the long list of "pros". If for whatever reason you need to leave a section of regular shoelaces looser than the rest (differential lacing), these will not work. In my case it's the mid-foot arthritis bulge that requires a little looser lacing about half way up. The upper laces need be tight to keep the back of shoe from moving. If any protrusion (bunion, arthritis, etc.) requires differential lacing, these are not for you.Interestingly, my Salomon Mid X-Ultra 3 and Quest 4 ... MoreWent with a "3" hoping to save anyone with less than perfect feet from ordering and returning these shoes. I'm sure there are no statistics as to what percent of people buying hiking shoes have less than perfect feet. I am pretty sure Salomon is missing out on a LOT of potential sales by doggedly hanging on to a wanky tie system on most of their low cut shoes.
I bought these to replace another pair exactly the same that I bought last year. The edge of the’ rubber’ wrap around toe started to detach slightly from the upper. I reported this online to Salomon via their 2-year warranty policy attaching photos. They immediately acknowledged my claim and that same day confirmed back to me that they’d reviewed my submission accepting the issue had been caused by a manufacturing or material defect. There was no quibble, they apologised and emailed me a digital voucher for the full value to purchase replacement Salomen footwear of my choice. Fantastic first class customer service and communication from Salomen which couldn’t have been quicker nor fairer. Amazing service.Hoping the new pair won’t develop the same defect as other than the issue I had, the original pair were great hiking shoes that I wore all the time ! They’re really comfortable and provide excellent performance all round. No regrets buying them particularly with the level of excellent customer service I received from Salomen.
I was previously very happy with the X Ultra 3 Wide shoes - they were durable, comfortable and incredibly well made. They were compacted in one lump, much not to say the first time I wore them (after a fitting) and immediately went on a 2-week trek in the Himalayas. Therefore, disregarding the negative reviews, I took the risk of buying the new model Xultra 4 Wide. And believe it, if I had set out in them in the hilamayas straight from the march the expedition would have been lost. During the fitting the shoes were OK, but after the first march they started to squeeze me in the upper part of the foot, then in the lateral part, then one of the shoes became loose, and finally after 3 months they settled on the foot, and now they rub only the ankle. Workmanship and aesthetics of the shoe have nothing to do with the photos, the shoe looks like a cheap version of a noname company. The surface of the Goretex looks as if it is too large, which makes it fold over at the bends at the crotch, causing the goretex to crack. Maybe it's for the better, they will deteriorate faster I will stop using them sooner. Nevertheless, the feeling for the foot is not the worst - the worst is the noise they make with every step, because they creak. The sole and the lining make it seem as if they are not well-fitted together, hence the sound. Other than that, they protect well against moisture and when pressed firmly enough they hold the foot, although they are very uncomfortable and it's a shame to walk in them because of the sound they make. However, they were very expensive, so unfortunately I have to wear them now until they break down, which will probably happen soon.
I have worn the x-ultras and gx 3s for six years. In 2021 solomon changed the sizing of their shoes, making them run much narrower. I bought a pair online the exact size and model as prior years without trying them on in 2021, and they were way too tight. Dont buy hiking shoes online. Buying a wide for the first time in my life, my foot fit in the shoe. I went on a three mile walk in them and quickly noticed two "design flaws". First, the shoe string tightener has changed, and seems to loosen up over time, meaning your shoe wont stay tight the way it should. Second, and much worse for me, the cloth/membrane on the tongue is a little thin and loose, so bunches up if the tongue is loose. The shoe pivots right at the top of the toe box, which is where the cloth bunches up. This gives you a lump of shoe pressing down onto the top of your foot with every step. With some adjustments, this can be fixed for a while, but comes back over time. Having to stop every half mile to fix your shoe is not worth it. With proper fit, maybe this can be resolved, but i could not get it to work. On my way to return them and switch out of solomons for the first time in 7 pairs of shoes.
Salomon has been my "go to" hiking shoe and backpacking boot company for decades, so it is with regret that I am writing a less than positive review about the Ultra 4 GTX. This review is based on about 50 miles of trails in the mountains of Santa Barbara (in an attempt to break them in), followed by another 300 miles on the Portuguese route of the Camino de Santiago, so it can't be said that I didn't try my best to like them. That said... every foot is different, you may love them, but my review shares some common themes with others.1. Although the quick lacing system is nice for slipping them on/off, you can't do any custom lacing such as having the toe box tighter/looser than the heel/ankle, a real drawback for experienced hikers who use this technique to accommodate differences in terrain or slope, or foot condition over the course of a long day(s).2. Salomon's "Advanced Chassis" claims to "target articulations on the outer foot for optimum stability...", and that's true, it's a wonderfully stable shoe, but the chassis transfers a disproportional amount of load/pressure to the outside edge of your foot, and at the end of a 20 mile day with a 25 lb. load, I had bruising on the outer part of both feet, something I'd never experienced before with Salomon or any other shoe for that matter.3. The heel/ankle box has what I believe is a wire, running horizontally about an 1.25" above the sole and the padding over that wire at the back of the ankle is thin to begin with and wears out fast, leaving the wire to rub the back of your ankle. Normally this can be at least partially remedied by varying lacing tightness, either snugging up the ankle so it doesn't move as much, or loosening it to provide more room, but you can't do that without adjusting the fit of the entire shoe (see #1 above).4. In the pursuit of lightness (which it is), Salomon appears to have sacrificed padding, everywhere, but most notably in the sole. It's not a huge problem for days under 10 miles, but if you're pushing above 10 you can expect to feel that lack of padding in a profound way.In summary, I've had just about every Salomon predecessor of this shoe and I used to love them, but the following sums up what I believe has happened more and more with each new iteration ... a) lightweight, b) ruggedness, c) comfort... pick any TWO because you can't have all three. The older Salomon low hikers used to be comfortable and rugged, but albeit a little on the heavy side. These Ultra 4's are lighter than their predecessors and are still very rugged, but comfort and adjustability was sacrificed to an unacceptable degree (in my opinion).I still love the Salomon Qwest series backpacking boot because it's not trying to be something else... it's rugged and comfortable, and unapologetic about its weight. The Ultra 4 is in my opinion is a day hiker, or low mileage multi-day shoe.I'm pulling for you Salomon... you can do better.
Tried on this shoe and 2 by other makers after research of comparison reviews online. This shoe felt the best of the three when I was fitted and walked around the store a bit. I bought it and the next day had a chance to try them out on a test hike in the neighborhood. Within the first half mile I felt a rubbing spot on the inside of my instep just behind the big joint of my big toe. I dialed my walk back to just two miles and checked my feet and the shoes. Sure enough redness of a likely blister on my foot if I continued any further. Inside the boot one of the stiffening straps sewn or bonded to upper of the shoe creates a small bump or bulge when the shoe flex - enough to make this shoe unworkable for me. The cautionary lesson is that this effect was not apparent ... MoreTried on this shoe and 2 by other makers after research of comparison reviews online. I returned the shoes to the store the next day. Wish they'd worked for me.
