An Improvement over the 4TB 850 EVOs

I bought six of these to replace the four 850 EVOs (one of the other two new 860s is for an additional data drive and the other one is a spare) that were in the desktop machine that recently died (the new machine is still under construction). So far, all I've done is to copy over the data on the original 850 EVO data drives to the new ones (I'm going to use the old data drives for backups for the new data drive). The data transfer went as well as expected (and I have high expectations) but one thing I noticed was the new Pros ran a lot cooler than the older EVOs. I don't know if that is due to going from an EVO to a Pro, from an 850 to an 860, or both. Others I've discussed this with point out the 860s use a newer controller and internal DRAM. Once I get the new rig up and going, I'll report back if any problems develop, which I'm not expecting since I've had excellent results with Samsung SSDs all the way back to the 840 Pros. Of the 38 or so Sammy's I've bought over the years, I still have all but two of them. My first SSD, a 128GB 840 Pro, ran 24/7 and died just before its five year warranty ran out (I didn't bother with filing a warranty claim since I no longer had any use for a drive that small). The second one was a 4TB 850 EVO that arrived DOA (Newegg quickly replaced it with a new one; good customer service over all is why Newegg is my first choice for computer parts). All the others are still in service except for six 500GB 850 EVOs I retired because I outgrew them and these six new Pros awaiting the completion of my new machine (the 500GB SSDs are still good with plenty of write life left so I keep hoping I'll find a use for them; convert them into super sized USB thumb drives?).

Drive is reliable and fast, but I'm having issues with dual boot

Got this as a replacement for a 5 yr old Mushkin SSD, which for some reason just got corrupted one day; showed only a single partition of size 32K. So far, this Samsung SSD is working great. I've had more trouble getting this configured for dual boot in an UEFI secure boot PC with LInux alongside Windows 10. I'm on my 4th and hopefully final attempt, disconnecting the original hard drive after migrating using Paragon. When I did this with the old Mushkin, everything just worked. For some reason this time, switching back and forth between Windows and Linux sometimes booted up Windows from the hard drive, and then wouldn't boot at all since the EFI entries got messed up. Windows apparently reinserts itself into EFI every time it boots.

Since 2012 I have exchanged several SSDs in my ever evolving build. Several brands have failed on me, but never one of the Samsung drives. I have currently four SSDs in my build which I use quite a lot (somewhere in the terabite range on read-write per month). I keep my SSDs cooled in their slots with a dedicated fan, trying to keep temps below 45 degrees at all times, which paid off so far. Samsung Magician helps me to keep track on usage and on overall health of the drives. I buy new drives and replace them whenever Samsung Magician tells me that the health of the drives go down. I have a constant HDD backup (4 TB Western Digital) that I only had to use when the other brands failed on me (not name shaming these here, we all know who those brands are). Whatever people say, keep your drives cool, check regularly on wear due to load and you should never have an issue with a Samsung drive. I will probably replace the one non-Samsung drive left with another EVO. This review comes from a guy that drives a non-nonsense non-RGB-show-off air-cooled functional build right now, so my system is optimized on cooling my components (including all drives) and raw functionality (my drives are in swap bays as well).

This is my second Samsung drive, my other is the 850. I got this one to update to Windows 10, I ran Windows 7 as long as I could, but it was starting to become a problem with no updates. Used the Samsung cloning software to clone the drives and then Updated it to Windows 10 keeping the original drive with Windows 7 as a back up. (Windows 10 Pro update was still free, if you have the original Windows 7 key). The drives are very stable with no issues. I ran the original 850 for about 5 years and it was still going strong. The cloning software is stupid easy to use. Cloned Windows 7 and updated to Windows 10 in less then an hour. This helps if the main drive is just the operating system with very little other stuff on the drive. On my older machine Dell Workstation twin Xenon T3500 (SATA II) I have to use Rapid mode with Samsung Magician, otherwise the speed is seriously effected, down to 1,000 Mb/s. (Rapid mode creates certain worry should the power go out, as there is a greater chance to corrupt data) Still get over 3Mb/s read and write. Too lazy to build my own uninterrupted power supply, and do not trust the store bought cheap units. Also, using 10% Over Provisioning, but with 1 Tb drive that is not an issue. Running well for last 1/2 year. Purchased the second one couple of week ago and plugged it in just to make sure it work. Using it as a storage drive for now. No issues. Should they fail in the future, I can blame Samsung and not myself for being cheap. Having said all that, I have purchased about 15 different SSD's in last 2 years. Crucial, Mushkin, WD, PNY, Hynix and Kinston and had no issues with any of them. Sure some differences in write and read speed, but not noticeable in actual work. All of them speed up and gave a new life to PC with disc drives.

Summary of hard drive performance
20 May 2019

I bought this solid state drive because it had Samsung's new V-NAND technology and I wanted a drive with 2 bit Multi Level Cells. The specifications say that the drive has 2 bit MLC for the vertical NAND cells and I was interested in this technology. The ssd seems to work ok most of the time and it is fairly fast. Samsung provides Magician software which allows viewing drive health, erasing the ssd, or updating its firmware. Cons: I expected the drive to perform a little faster. So I wasn't all that impressed with the performance. When I use RAPID mode in the settings for the drive in Magician software, the drive actually performs slightly slower. My biggest issue with the drive right now is that I am getting a blue screen in Windows 10. The blue screens I am getting have the error codes: KERNEL DATA INPAGE ERROR, and also SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION. Blue screens were never happening with the old mechanical hard drive. I ran the chkdsk utility several times with the arguments /X /R several times to detect and fix any data issues on the drive. I also ran the system file checker (sfc /scannow) and they all indicated that the operating system's files are fine. I spent a lot of money on that ssd because it was advertised as having 2 bit MLC which is faster and better than 3 bit TLC. I wasn't expecting having blue screens at all. I installed and used another Kingston SSD several years ago with an older laptop and it still performs fine.

Worked like a charm as a laptop hard drive replacement
19 December 2019

I used Acronis True Image software (which I already owned) to clone my existing hard drive. It took about 45 minutes and was pretty straightforward. I was apprehensive when I put the laptop back together and turned it on, hoping it would work. Windows booted immediately and everything I had on my original hard drive now worked on my SSD. The only program requiring re-authentication was Office 2010 and I did that with one click of the mouse. Taking my laptop apart was a challenge as two screws on the back were covered up and I initially missed them, making it a bit frustrating. Once I discovered those additional screws and took them out, the entire replacement of the drive and reassembly of the laptop took only about 15 minutes. I had been looking at the possibility of replacing my laptop because it was so slow but now it's a keeper. This upgrade, along with changing my default browser to the new Chromium Edge browser (still in development with a 1/15/20 anticipated release date) have made my laptop purchase of many years ago a much longer term investment. Hurrah, Hurrah, Hurrah! Note that I had also been looking at the WD Blue 1TB SSD which is very similar and on sale $10 cheaper than this drive. Probably either one would have satisfied me but the Samsung is clearly a worthwhile purchase for me.

If using this (or any) SSD to clone a boot drive, you MUST have a bootable recovery USB for WIndoes 10 (although it DOES NOT have to be for the same version; you can use a 32-bit version with x64 or vice-versa, for this purpose) so you can run DISKPART on the cloned drive, once installed — to give the boot volume a temporary drive letter — and then BOOTBCD to set *that drive letter* as the boot volume. This *is not* easy info to find on the internet; you are quite welcome. Most guides will tell you to format the new drive ^^'. Note 2: If you end up needing to swap the original boot drive back in, you may very well have to do the same little dance with DISKPART and BOOTBCD =/ . If your system won't boot after a clone/original swap (either way), this is almost certainly the issue. You can run both DISKPART and BOOTBCD with the argument "/?", by the by, for more info on their use, like so: "diskpart /?" (sans quotes, of course).

I purchased this 860 EVO SATA III drive to replace a working, 1 TB HDD in my one year old laptop. The speed difference is ASTOUNDING! I knew it would be faster. I didn't think it would be as FAST as it is.I used the same SATA III interface in the laptop that the HDD used and installation was a "breeze". Now my laptop boots and runs MARVELOUSLY faster. I have been running and using this new, replacement SSD for three weeks now and it is performing perfectly. After installing this 860 EVO SATA III SSD, I used BOTH of the "Samsung" software programs. The first one for "Migration" of my "Windows 10 Home" and personal data to this new SSD. I then downloaded and used the "Magician" program for update and optimization of this new SSD. The first one for "Migration" of my "Windows 10 Home" and personal data to this new SSD. I then downloaded and used the "Magician" program for update and optimization of this new SSD. Those "Samsung" programs worked perfectly. The "Migration" program was not only EASY, it was very FAST.The "Magician" software is also great. It immediately downloaded from the "Samsung" website and then VERY EASILY updated the firmware in my new SSD. The "Magician" program is an EASY to use maintenance program to monitor the drive. It also has a "performance booster" feature that did make my new 860 EVO SSD run even faster.I am so pleased, I immediately ordered a "Samsung 970 EVO" SSD for my desktop PC. That will be an NVMe/M.2 interface so that will be even faster. I shopped "long and hard". These "Samsung" products get the best reviews and at a great value in cost.I am very pleased. I would highly recommend these SSDs.
