I bought this lens in January of 2022, and it stayed on my A74 until December of 2022. It was a great lens! Coming from the Canon RP paired with the Samyang 85 1.4, this lens with the A74 auto focus was spectacular! A night and day difference! My favorite quality I loved about this lens is the lens flare. There is something magical about it. But, shooting into the sun can cause a green ghost flare. This lens will still be in my kit for black & white photography and for my 2nd camera body.

This focal length offers great alternatives to work at a reasonable distance from your subject to either capture head and shoulders or even full body portraits. The size and weight of this lens couldn't be better. The lens is reasonably sharp in the center and mid zone, but does get soft in the corners at the wide open apertures. But that's okay for portraits. Stopped down, to F/5.6 or 8, the image is quite sharp, but all focal lengths do exhibit some color fringing. Samyang has good optical formulas, but less stellar quality control. This is my second copy, the first stopped working on the first day I was using it. I have read nothing but good reviews about this lens and I was especially intrigued by the astrophotography function. My initial impression was very positive with regards to Fit Form and Function and the quality feel. However, the copy of lens I received was soft, even in the center at f/1.8 which is claimed to be very sharp. As a matter of fact some reviews claim the lens is very sharp across the frame at f/1.8, but certainly not the copy I obtained. To make things worst, the lens is so de-centered that I think it may even be defective. One thing I have learned: It appears that websites that perform reviews get a selected, very good copy to the reviewer, but we might end up with a bad copy. Cheap lens to get shooting quickly
7 December 2022

If you don't know what you are looking for and just want to start using your camera I guess it is ok.I wish I had a zoom for landscape photography, this thing is very wide and my Full Frame Alpha a7-II does not have enough megapixels to crop out the region I want without loosing quality. It does not work well for macro photograpy: minimum distance is too far.I hate the fact that there is multiple infinity focus points(4 or 5), so you need to test every notch for sharpness when focusing far away. The last infinity point cannot focus on stars well so you need to dial it down, and I don't know what could be further out that night sky stars.

Good value lens with character
19 October 2022

The Samyang 45mm is a great value lens with character. With the Sony a7iv it has quick & accurate AF. Great field of view - wider than a 50mm without the distortion of a 35mm. Renders beautiful images with soft bokeh. For best performance, buy the Samyang dock to update the firmware. Lens is even better with current version firmware. Highly recommend.

Must buy on sale!
6 March 2023

Bought this used, 10 Good as new, on B&H for a great price.Got it and sure enough like new, retail box included, etc. Tested it out immediately and quickly determined it to be a keeper. Surprisingy fast AF and Quiet! Very sharp wide open, particulary in the center, with the edges being a bit soft as expected. Stopped down to f4, 5.6, and gets noticeably better on the edges and very sharp in the middle still. Really nice and light too. Custom switch is nice to adjust aperture or switch to manual focus. Anyway, at about a third the cost of Sony's FE 35mm f1.8, I highly recommend this Samsung AF lens. Come on Sony, you can do better pricing on a standard F1.8 lens. Do it!

Punches well above it's weight class

Picked this up with the very basic requirement of "fast" and "cheap enough that if my kid obliterates it I won't be too bummed." The attached photo was the very first I took with it, and it was shot one step outside the Adorama shop in NYC... at F1.8 and blind from the hip. Positive first impression? Check.I snapped a few more shots (all wide open) and then went about my business. When I pulled them up the next day, I was honestly shocked. Sharpness is great, distortion is very minimal, and it's full of character and vibrancy. I expected default kid photos around the house... I did not expect a completely solid walkabout lens. Still have to test the autofocus more thoroughly, but it grabbed people on the street walking at NYC pace no problem. I could lock onto faces and track them through intersections amongst other people no problem. It seems very fast to acquire focus in AF-C... easily grabbing people some 40+ feet away (catty corner busy city intersection) and rifling off shots at 10 frames per second without missing focus. It weighs nothing and it's built like a toy... but man, this thing is out for blood.

Still new to me, but loving it so far

I'm a big fan of these Samyang tiny series lenses, in fact they're part of what convinced me to invest in the Sony full frame system. I started with the 18mm 2.8, then the 35mm 1.8 now this 24mm 1.8. Each new lens of theirs seems to be progressively better. The 18mm provides a fun field of view and decent sharpness, the 35mm added weather sealing and a faster aperture to the table, and now the 24mm adds close focusing which I missed in the 35mm.I take a lot of pictures of kids and pets around the house. 24mm lets me get a lot of shots around the table, while playing with the kids and so on that the 35mm requires me to back up a bit for. Sure, just like with the 35mm Samyang, the bokeh isn't always the creamiest, but I think it's passable and it's a tradeoff I can live with for the small size and price of this lens.

This is a Truly Unexpected Value!
10 March 2023

I have generally believed as a matter of principle that you get pretty. much what you pay for. But I really wanted a 24mm prime and money was tight. So I decided to give this lens a try. I also knew that if the lens did not meet my expectations, I could take advantage of B&H Photo's excellent return policies. After getting this lens I immediately went out and tested it for sharpness and centering. Two issues I was not confident would be up to my expectations. WOW! This lens is awesome! Sharp? Check! Centered? Check! Small and Light? Check! Quality exceeds expectations? Check, Check, Check! This lens is a definite keeper. I couldn't recommend it highly enough. If you are looking for a great 24mm prime for your Sony mirrorless camera, GET IT!

This lens solved my normal-prime dilemma.
24 February 2023

After spending gobs of research time trying to narrow down which prime lens (35 -vs- 50mm) and manufacturer (Sony -vs- Samyang) would fit my needs, I still couldn't decide because each lens had their benefits and drawbacks. Then I found a review that swayed my thinking to consider this 45mm.As I watched the test footage, I began to realize that (for my needs) I could replace the two most popular prime focal lengths with a single compromise: the 45mm: a lens tight enough to be normal but without compression, and wide enough to accommodate small-room venues, but without distortion. In particular, this lens was given a 4.9 star review for IQ, AF accuracy, and bokeh in mid-2022. It does have a plastic lens hood, but as I will mostly be using a matte box, who cares. In short, I have been able to replace two prime lenses with a single, lightweight, supremely portable and fast 1.8 aperture full-frame AF lens with great IQ and character (that holds its own withthe name brands) for the price of most manual focus-only lenses. I'm a happy camper.

Product description An effective take on a popular focal length, the Sony E-mount AF 35mm f/1.8 FE from Samyang is a wide-angle prime mixing a lightweight and portable design with a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture. The optical design incorporates a two extra-low dispersion elements and a pair of aspherical elements, which help to suppress both chromatic and spherical aberrations for improved sharpness, color accuracy, and clarity. An Ultra Multi-Coating has also been applied to reduce flare and ghosting in order to achieve higher contrast when working in strong lighting conditions. The lens's linear STM autofocus motor works in conjunction with Sony cameras' AF systems for quick, quiet, and precise focusing performance, and manual focus override is also available for more refined control. Additionally, a Custom Switch enables making intuitive adjustments of a variety of camera and exposure settings by rotating the lens's focusing ring.
