The first thing I noticed was the size of the box! It was apparent that this new drive was a lot bigger than my 10TB G-Drive, and it was not going to fit on the shelf in the computer desk with the other hard drives. I have two other G-Drives, a 10TB and an 8TB (both of which I have purchased from B&H), along with three Lacie Quadras. It is really fast! It took less than 24 hours to transfer 9.5 TBs from the other G-Grive. In comparison, it took 2.5 days to fill a 5TB Seagate portable drive that a friend sent to me two years ago. (I collect and trade live concert audio recordings and need an ultra reliable hard drive for storage.) The G-Drives are built like a bank vault and seem just as secure. B&H shipped it to me in three days for no charge so that was an added benefit. It works very well with my new M1 iMac. I couldn't be happier with G-Drive or B&H!

I had a couple of 8TB G-Raid drives that were 8 years old and one was starting to make clicking sounds. Got one of these to replace them and so far very happy with it. Overall it's quiet - just some slight noise when it's waking up, which is normal and fine. Performance is good for non-SSD, about 220-225. The extra thunderbolt port is a nice plus, although I don't need to daisy chain anything to it yet.The price for a 12TB model is hard to beat. Most of my drives are SSD but this is great for backups and even working on photo editing from it gives you satisfactory performance.

I liked this drive so much, I purchased a second drive for my new Mac Studio. For years, I worked with USB pocket drives, but this drive has greatly improved my home computing experience. I partitioned half for TimeMachine, and half for my still and video photography. Install and setup was seamless, and I've had flawless performance since using both of these drives...one new, the original over the course of year.

I used this drive to store pictures and videos from my GoPro and DJI drone as well as backup for a MP3 music collection. The drive did not get a lot of use compared to my other drives. After approximately 18 months, my Mac started indicating I had disconnected the drive without ejecting it. Not long after that my Mac started rebooting due to a PCI bus error. I purchased a WD Elements 16TB just to copy the data from this 6TB G-Drive over to and it knocked my Mac out many times in an attempt to do so before I thought to put ice packs on top of the drive. This at least kept the drive from rebooting my Mac, but after I started looking at some of the video files I had copied over after I placed ice packs on the drive, over half of the files are corrupted. I lost a lot of music, pictures, and videos over this hard drive. I have used WD hard drives since the days of DOS. I only lost one other way back when. I also have a G-Raid 8TB which has been running since 2017 with no issues whatsoever. Sorry I am forced to rate this drive with only a single star.
I originally purchased this drive purely to store unused media files and completed video projects since I already have a SSD drive that I edit directly off of. However after testing the G-Drive I found that I’m able to edit 4k 120P video directly off this G-Drive without using proxies or transcoding. For context I’m editing XAVC S, 4K 120p, 8-bit video on a MacBook Pro connected via thunderbolt to the G-Drive. The speeds aren’t AS fast as my SanDisk Extreme SSD but it’s fast enough for my use-case which is all that matters. I haven’t done any accurate speed testing but in general it took about 45 mins to transfer 1TB of video data from my SSD to this G-Drive.The G-Drive Pro is also capable of daisy chaining drives so I’m able to connect my SSD to the G-Drive which ... MoreI originally purchased this drive purely to store unused media files and completed video projects since I already have a SSD drive that I edit directly off of. Ive only had the drive for a couple days but so far it does everything I need and looks great in the process. If the reliability is solid I’ll definitely be adding more to my setup in the future.
I'm writing this review because I recently purchased this drive and upon first use it was already making terrible grinding/clicking noises that sound like the indication of a drive disk going bad. All I had done at that point was format the drive and name it. So as an editor who has experienced this many times with G-drive in particular, I returned the product in exchange for a new one. However, after 2 weeks, my exchanged drive arrived and I noticed that upon first use, it had the same clicking noises as the previous one. I also noticed that my computer immediately was able to identify the name of the drive and that I didn't need to format the drive (Drive typically comes formatted for mac and I use windows). I realized that B&H instead of exchanging the broken drive, repackaged and sent me the same drive I sent them. All in all, either every one of these drives has a terrible clicking disk, or B&H really trying to pull a fast one on me. Both are probably true, but either way this drive is bottom tier.
This is the best Thunderbolt 3 external drive that uses spinning hard drives inside that you can buy. I have used a lot of alternatives. Synology and QNap NASs, USB 3.1 (gen. 2) enclosures, and various USB disks, as well as some really fast Thunderbolt 3 RAID enclosures that use four NVME drives. They are clearly faster, since they use SSDs, but price-wise, I can only justify using 1TB SSD drives or smaller. This lets me consolidate all of my data into one very fast (for a spinning hard drive) enclosure. I can work with my files directly on the drive using Lightroom, Photoshop, etc., and not suffer any lag whatsoever.Of course, there's only one hard drive inside this enclosure, so it's not safe to rely on as a backup for other drives unless you back it up to. And I do, to Backblaze B2 (the least expensive but reliable cloud storage system). I use Chronosync 10 on my Mac to do that backing up.If you need fast storage (40GB/s) then Thunderbolt 3 is the best choice, and on that front, after a lot of research, this is the drive I chose. And I couldn't be happier. It's not cheap, but quality rarely is.
WARNING: This product is Thunderbolt 2 Speed 20 Gb/s with a Thunderbolt 3 Cable. Thunderbolt 3 is a standard 40 Gb/s, twice the speed. I have spoken with customer service numerous times and only gone round and round on the issue. Yes it approaches their posted speed, but that speed does not actually meet the T3 standard. Additionally, the drive puts itself to sleep constantly though the system preferences are set to never do so. An advanced RMA to see if a new drive will address that issue will cost an additional $25 according to their site. Having worked for well over a decade in post production, I cannot call this a professional drive for storage, editorial, or customer experience.
Despite what two WD salespeople told me. Drive will not work with Windows 11. Spent 2 hours 1 day with WD tech support, and they concluded G Pro Drive was defective. Returned it & bought new one. Spent 4 hours 1 day. Would not appear thus ca not format. I knew you had to reformat drive, but in File Explorer won’t recognize G drive, even though I can see it is connected in hidden icons. Sent that back as well. Waiting for both refunds.
I bought this because my university has stopped allowing alumni to use its free google drive unlimited storage and needed to download 20tb of data. I already have theSanDisk Professional 7.68TB G-DRIVE PRO STUDIO SSD for editing 4k videos. That thing is fast and quiet! This drive, while I knew would be slower, is much slower and very loud. Sometimes I feel like I am back in an MRI. I am obviously making a joke, but it does sound like one. I seen others make a comment about this and maybe it is only because I only use ssd drives, and not used to the sound, or maybe this is an issue! I have only had this one day.
