Battery drains very fast

We thought these would be great for apple watch access to our home. HomeKit app management is useful. The trade-off for the convenience of HomeKit is that these locks go through batteries VERY FAST. Like, just a few days, during a cold Minnesota winter in a detached garage. We beefed up the WiFi signal in the garage, which helped, but we're lucky to get through 2 weeks. We added newly-charged batteries at 4AM (after another break-in), 12 hours later, it's down to 36% (it's not even cold out; 60-degree weather). The app keeps logging me out, so I often don't get any ...Ā MoreWe thought these would be great for apple watch access to our home. The lock will just be dead one day, my kids will circumnavigate that door, and it'll stay unlocked until I restart the cycle. We've had multiple break-ins due to the dead lock, and have lost many items of great financial and sentimental value. Those losses are my fault because I didn't keep the door locked, yet I resent Schlage for making it absurdly difficult to do that.I'd hoped that a smart lock with homekit access would reduce my worries and make it easier to stay safe and secure. This lock has done the opposite of all of these things.

Home Depot used to rekey these for free, and the associated told to bring them back when one of the employees trained in doing this was in, or I could take them to any other Home Depot and they'd do the same. That turned out not be be true at all - after a few days and three Home Depots later, I found out they no longer do this for Schlage locks. So now if I want them rekeyed, I have to pay a locksmith. The second issue I found is that using the physical key isn't great. As opposed to purely mechanical Schlage deadbolts, these simply do not work. They are not smooth and require slight jiggling of the key (of the three I purchased, only one works well). The key is mostly a backup on a smart lock, but I was still expecting it to work well. One works so poorly that attempts to use the key are frustrating. The physical installation isn't bad at all and the instructions are pretty clear. I got 2/3 installed with no issue at all. Upon installing the third and inserting the battery pack, I found it didn't work like the others. It errored. The instructions and further web instructions were of no help at all. Schlage has a support page with a form that allows you to request assistance and upload a picture. After doing so I was informed that they would reply in 5-10 business days. So I called the number instead - you get put on hold with no estimate of the wait time. While waiting I researched factory resets and such and while none of the instructions worked for this lock, I did manage to get it reset and operational.Next was connecting them. I downloaded the app and started the process of connecting the first lock. It went pretty smooth except it had poor signal to the router. There's no reason for that - the router is quite powerful, not far away, and on the same floor as the lock. I can open the door and walk outside for 100 feet in the opposite direction of the router and still have very strong signal on my cheap android phone.I moved the router a little closer and adjusted the antennas. The signal was still hit and miss. I managed to set a pin and the phone could control the lock. It seemed like there was hope. However, after connecting to the app, the keypad became non-functional. It doesn't even light up.I wanted to see if I'd have better luck with the next one. It had full signal strength for some reason, and seemed like it was working ok. I got to where it asked me to set a PIN. Then it said 'Failed to set PIN". The app get stuck here - I can try different pins an it always fails. There's no back button. There's nothing to do except close the app. I'll take this opportunity to mention that the app is slow to do anything at all.For 2/3 of these locks I had to bore out the older holes in the door to accommodate the new deadbolt size. That means I'm left with useless locks and can't even put the old locks back in. Purchasing these locks is looking like a huge mistake and expense in time, money, energy, gasoline, and frustration. Everything about the experience from the miscommunication at Home Depot about the locks being rekeyed to the locks themselves fell far below my expectations.

If you pull and hold the door closed and use the keypad and it locks, it's an alignment issue. The Smart deadbolt should lock on its own. To fix misalignment: I had to fill the door handle's latch plate's jam's screw holes (I used toothpicks and wood glue-dowel) and trimmed the back edge of the plate's recessed area about 1/8", then reset the plate. This made the door close tighter. Repeat the keypad test to verify.I have the Encode version: Check the list of great features on Build.com. The Schlage app is uncomplicated and easy to do or understand. My only wish is that Schlage's door handle's latch could be designed to extend. It engages but not enough IMO. Another builder faux pas. The Smart deadbolt latch is hefty and long enough.I would recommend this product to family and friends.

My wife and I bought this lock after buying our first home. We wanted something secure (and we trusted Schlage with that endeavor) but something that was easy to let family and friends have their own codes while we were away and needed the house and animals tended to. The features on this lock are outstanding. Wifi connected, connects to our iPhones so we can use our Apple Watch and iPhones to unlock, and the ability to easily add PINs for anyone we want with a few simple taps. I love that we can see the history of the lock.If I were to change anything about the lock, I have a few things in mind. Add more pins to the manual key to add security. It's fairly easy to pick a 5-pin lock. For this purpose, we only kept 1 key and have it hidden well in the emergency case we need to use it. The lock is also loud when operating electronically (unlocking or locking without the key). The third is more of an app option; I'd like the ability to further customize what notifications I get (like I don't want to be notified when it gets locked with the deadbolt, just from the outside) and the ability to assign a 1 time use PIN, instead of just a schedule or delete the code after I know it's been used (for contractors, etc.)Overall, this lock is pretty great. Family and friends love it. It looks great, it's extremely simple to install and program, and the touchscreen feedback is top-notch.

I own and use multiple smart locks, and I am saying this based on experience with Schlage.Installation, Setup and Compatibility ::Easy and simple to set up. It looks aesthetically pleasing as well...Improvement areas ::Wish the lock has better integration and simpler ways to integrate with smart hubs (Alexa or Google home)Wish the lock can auto lock based on door open or close only, and not auto lock when the door is open. (I had auto lock on, and took some getting used to, to eventually disable it).

The smart features of this lock are stellar: point your iPhone at it or ask Siri to unlock the door at it delivers! But the keypad has a few serious drawbacks. 1. The lock and unlock symbols are low contrast visually, and hard to differentiate, day or night. 2. The keypad is dark, and you can’t see the numbers until the backlight turns on. [The only obvious and easy to see symbol is the (( )) symbol, which is also the number 5.] And unless you hit the unlock or lock button precisely, it enters whatever number your finger is near as the first digit in your code, which messes it up. And many people intuitively tap the (( )) symbol, which enters the number 5. Luckily, these problems could be solved with a firmware update! Schlage, please make it so that there is an option is settings called ā€œFirst Keypad Touch Wakes Screenā€ which would mean that if a user touches anywhere in the screen, it wakes the screen and illuminates it without counting as the first digit of the code.It would also be nice if future versions of the lock have icons for lock and unlock that are easier to differentiate, and higher contrast for easier visibility. But a firmware fix would solve the most serious issues and make the lock much easier for older or non-techie family members to use. Simply add the option in settings to make the first touch of the keypad wake and illuminate (without counting as the first number of the code) and the lock immediately becomes a 5 star product!

[Rewarded Review] Large improvement over Yale and Eufey
1 September 2024

This is the third brand of smart lock I tried for our Airbnb, and so far, it’s the best. My Yale Assure kept losing its Wi-Fi connection on our Airbnb, which meant people wouldn’t get their codes when they booked, and Yale’s customer service was absolutely terrible. Eufey had a thumb print reader that was pretty great, except that both it and the keypad barely worked when it got cold, and the throw is so bulky and square it would often fail to lock, unless we really pulled on our front door.So far the Encode Plus is by far the best. It has a much better touchscreen, and the phone tap unlock feature works great! I do wish that I didn’t have to purchase an additional advice from Apple for her to be able to use her phone as a tap key. That feels unnecessary. It has a much better touchscreen, and the phone tap unlock feature works great! I do wish that I didn’t have to purchase an additional advice from Apple for her to be able to use her phone as a tap key. That feels unnecessary. I also need to call out the throw as being far superior to any other smart lock I’ve seen. The throw is beveled, so even if your door is a little warped, it catches the hole and slides in. This was a game changer for the front door of our hundred-year-old house, after a year of wrestling with getting our previous Eufey lockto work there. if you have an old door with a bit of a warp, upgrading to this, Locke is absolutely worth it!I have had to reset my lock to get the phone tap to continue working, but I have to say that at least Schlage customer service support team is actually useful. They seem to know what they’re doing rather than just reading off a script, and unlike Yale cared about actually finding a solution to the problem (though it did require a factory reset which is annoying). I hear this is a common problem, so hopefully there is a firmware update coming that will fix it permanently. There is also apparently an issue with the Airbnb function, not working if the lock is connected to an Apple home network that I am also hoping they resolve soon, but for the time being, I am simply not connecting my Airbnb lock to my Apple home network as a work around.I’ve purchased two so far, one for our front door and one for our Airbnb) and plan on purchasing two more in the next couple of months.

I paid extra for Plus of the Encode series so the lock would work with my other smart products (apple), I believe connects to apple, google and amazon.First is why I can’t give this 4 stars. Schlage doesn’t indicate when purchasing how Plus generally works with your smart home network. I had to purchase an appleHome pod to get full apple homekit functionality which is an added expense. Also the main cable that runs through the door is vulnerable to installation, it is easy to damage.I gave 4 stars because this is a cool lock once you get it set up. Apple’s homekit automations seem better than the Schlage app does, but Schlage’s app is actually really good as is. If you don’t want to pay extra for Plus the regular Encode WiFi will probably be just as enjoyable.I like the finish of the lock, seems medium duty, not as heavy as older locks but the components are good where it matters. I also got the matching handle set which is the smoothest function of any brand door handle. Handles are getting too flimsy for large exterior doors but this is still solid. The lock’s remote locking feature is relatively seamless but your door must be able to fully shut without added force to turn the deadbolt. The manual lever backup feels solid. The keypad is perfect, senses input with ease and rarely press the wrong digit. Seems durable and looks slick. It also does not ever register input without touch, for example my old no brand smart lock would start going off when the sun started shining on my south facing front door. It’s also fun using apple’s homekit key like using your phone like a hotel key to operate the lock. My children think it’s a cool feature.Anyway after looking around this seemed like the best smart lock on the market and so far it’s been great for the few months I’ve owned it after some initial challenge installing and setting up the lock. I wouldn’t recommend it to a first time smart product user, you have to be familiar with how to connect smart devices to your home to get the full functionality.

[Rewarded Review] The absolute best on the market!

I am in my second month with my Encode Plus. I’ll save this. I’ve had others, and they don’t compare. Extremely easy to use and install, very convenient because I can either use the Schlage app, my HomeKit through Apple, my iPhone, or my Apple Watch. How much more convenient can it actually be? I also have an older Schlage Unit that I’ve had for approximately 12 years that obviously doesn’t have Wi-Fi but works like a brand-new unit. Schlage products are bulletproof! They’ve been in the lot business for as long as I can remember, and I’m 54. My parents still have the original locks at their house, and those are 55 years old. My wife questioned me on my purchase because our old units worked just fine, and I purchased the new unit. Now she understands and loves it ...Ā MoreI am in my second month with my Encode Plus. If so, this remote lockset won't work for you.You will be able to unlock it, but it will "Jam" when you try to lock it, because the bolt is not aligned with the hole.App viewing and use:This is a simple, uncluttered App.It has almost every feature you will want, and yet is easy to use. Perhaps too easy.If you get an alert, and open the App, your home screen is the lock you have placed at the top of your lock list. The lock, and unlock, button is the line drawing of a cartoon padlock, showing it unlocked and in green,or locked and in red.The cartoon line drawing takes up most of your screen.Accidental touching of any portion of this very large area will send a signal to your lock to either lock or unlock. If your deadbolt is misaligned, or the door is ajar slightly, the lock will show that it is Jammed.Casual use of the App can trigger locking and unlocking, if any part of the lock drawing is touched.Programming Request: Add a home screen feature that allows "View Only", as a toggle button.Functional Common Sense:There are two closures on your entry doors - a latch, which is operated by you entry handle, and a deadbolt, which is operated by a key (or in this case, a motor). If you want true remote access functionality, both the latch and deadbolt will have to be Wifi capable.Unlocking the deadbolt alone will not open the door if the latch is still locked. This means that you must buy both for each entryway that you want remote access for.
