I bought the 5000 version twice, first on sale to extend my storage on my PC. I was so happy I wished I had done the 10000/15000 at the time but it works very well for now and likely for the next few years—I have a lot more games and spend a lot less time thinking about what games I want to keep on my PC at the moment vs what games I’d like to have in general. I liked it so much and saw it would be compatible with my PS4 so I bought another one. It’s great for the same reasons, I suggest my friends purchase this if they dont already have an extended hard drive & if they can afford it—but now it’s even more affordable than when I bought it (both times)!

I placed this drive on top of a stack of books about 9 inches high. I connected the cord it came with and went to plug it to my Surface Pro. Apparently, the Surface was a little too far for the cord and I ended up pulling the cord enough for the drive to come with it. What followed was a pretty hard thud, enough for me to be concerned about the drive. I cleared my desk and plugged in the drive only to find 300GB of files wiped out. Luckily, I'm using this drive as a backup, so nothing was actually lost. As I tried to eject it, a notification popped up preventing me from ejecting. This was new to me, as I am able to eject without any issues. For $100, I'd expect the quality of this hard drive to be a little better. If you are looking to buy a hard drive, please be take extra care into it when to open it out of the box.

Received this Seagate Expansion Drive today. I purchased it mainly to watch video files on my smart TV. It worked right from the get-go. The file transfer rate from my PC to the drive was agreeably smooth and fast. Watching the files on my Sony X900H was a piece of cake. I just plugged it into the USB port and was soon watching HD content first through the TV's native media player and then through VLC. I didn't have to reformat the drive in order to screen content or to accept larger files. One of the files was more than 12GB. I couldn't recommend this product more highly, hence the five-star rating.

This is a great drive for storage. I bought two of the same version of this drive back in 2017 and both drives are still working great. I bought this new one to start replacing my older external drives. They typically last five years so I wanted to get ahead of when the old ones will eventually fail. Seagate makes great reliable drives. Use this model for storage only. Don't expect this drive to work like an internal SSD drive on your laptop or desktop.
I thought I disk this size would be overkill when I bought it, but now I'm convinced. I'm using 500GB for large video files and associated assets, and the remainder is an After Effects cache. I now have much faster renders, and smooth playback. The disk itself is quiet and doesn't generate much heat so I have no worries with it being mounted fulltime on my MacBook Pro. The only disappointing thing is not having a USB-C cable straight out of the box. I've repurposed surplus cable from other disks.
With external hard drives, the key issues for a basic user like me are: will it work right away without any hassle, and how fast will it copy files? And then you can think about things like how rugged it is, or how cool it looks. For the first issue, working right away, the Seagate portable is top notch. I plugged in the USB to my older MapBook and was immediately able to see it and start copying files with no issue. For the second issue, of speed, it was more of a mixed bag. Copying around 12GB of data from the laptop through the USB connection took a bit over 10 minutes. However, copying from a different external drive running on Thunderbolt was noticeably slower. If you are only using the external drive for regular backups and taking files on and off, this is ... MoreWith external hard drives, the key issues for a basic user like me are: will it work right away without any hassle, and how fast will it copy files? If you are running active files from the hard drive, like local streaming of media files, it is probably too slow for consistency.
This was super simple for me to set up. I've never used an external hard drive before, only flash drives, and didn't quite know what to expect. The set up was straight forward. As soon as I plugged it in, the drive window opened and I clicked the get started for Windows icon. That opened a registration page, I registered, then clicked a link about formatting the hard drive. I didn't have to do that step because my hard drive was already formatted for use. I started dragging and dropping files to the expansion drive and, voila! The size is portable and it's lightweight so you could travel with this easily. It's not small enough to fit comfortably in a pocket, but still portable.
I've seen some mixed reviews on this device and thought - hey, maybe I'll get one of the lucky ones! It certainly has great value for money, and it does indeed plug in and become recognised by the computer. It seems compact and you can absolutely store a lot of data on this drive........ however, there seems to be something off with this device. It'll recognize your data, but it seems to excessively spin down and not initiate the motor after a certain amount of time. It will transfer your data for about 10-30 seconds or so at fairly decent speeds for an external drive (~60-100/mbps) but then all of a sudden it will dive, and no data will transfer. Sometimes I'm lucky and it'll start up again after 30-90 seconds, but most of the time it will error out and say that ... MoreI've seen some mixed reviews on this device and thought - hey, maybe I'll get one of the lucky ones! I'll be returning this device under Officework's excellent return policy and under Australian Consumer Laws with a different (albeit slightly smaller) device.
Turns out that if you stick me in an oven, you’d call me a potato. The last review I wrote on this product was that it was transferring speeds were dropping intermittently.Well, this was because I run everything on my computer through a Dell WD15 Docking Station, and there are plenty of devices hooked up to it. Even though the device was plugged into a powered USB hub, it seems like it wasn’t getting enough power. Why this conclusion? Because when I directly attach the drive to the computer… it works! No problems at all!Well, silly, silly me.It’s still not the exact way I wanted to use the drive, but nonetheless, the drive does indeed work fine and for most normal people’s applications, this drive will work great.TL;DR: if you’re getting issues, make sure ... MoreTurns out that if you stick me in an oven, you’d call me a potato. The last review I wrote on this product was that it was transferring speeds were dropping intermittently.Well, this was because I run everything on my computer through a Dell WD15 Docking Station, and there are plenty of devices hooked up to it. We recently ran out of room on our PlayStation and the two options was to change out the internal drive for a bigger drive or add and external hard drive and for me the external hard drive seemed to be an easier option and this was so easy to set up. Setting this up only took a minute and it just going to the PlayStation devices and formatting the device and then changing the setting so the any new games and app would be installed on the hard drive. Another plus with the external hard drive when I’m not using it on the PlayStation I can also use it to save important documents so that I have back ups and because the hard drive is so small I can easily grab it and toss it in my purse, it is literally about the size of my hand so it is super portable. Also space wise this is really quiet enough for a ton of files and games as it’s about six times the space my PlayStation has on it to begin with so I feel like it will take me awhile to fill up. Overall I’m really happy with the external harddrive and think it’s definitely useful to have.
