I placed this drive on top of a stack of books about 9 inches high. I connected the cord it came with and went to plug it to my Surface Pro. Apparently, the Surface was a little too far for the cord and I ended up pulling the cord enough for the drive to come with it. What followed was a pretty hard thud, enough for me to be concerned about the drive. I cleared my desk and plugged in the drive only to find 300GB of files wiped out. Luckily, I'm using this drive as a backup, so nothing was actually lost. As I tried to eject it, a notification popped up preventing me from ejecting. This was new to me, as I am able to eject without any issues. For $100, I'd expect the quality of this hard drive to be a little better. If you are looking to buy a hard drive, please be take extra care into it when to open it out of the box.

Lots of storage for little cost. One 5TB unit allowed me to get rid of a few mechanical hard drives I was using with a dock. It seems to require quite a bit more power than a mechanical drive, though. When I plugged it into a USB port on my Panasonic plasma TV to watch a movie I stored on the drive, the TV displayed a message that said it could not supply the necessary power on the USB port. Now when I plug a mechanical drive into the TV that used to work fine, it now no longer works. The mechanical drive just clicks away but still works okay when plugged into a computer. So the TV's USB port was apparently damaged by the SS hard drive.

This is a great drive for storage. I bought two of the same version of this drive back in 2017 and both drives are still working great. I bought this new one to start replacing my older external drives. They typically last five years so I wanted to get ahead of when the old ones will eventually fail. Seagate makes great reliable drives. Use this model for storage only. Don't expect this drive to work like an internal SSD drive on your laptop or desktop.

I bought this drive because of the affordable price and the space (5TB). I had no connection or response issues. The ONLY thing... is the durability. I kept my mine in a case since day one and only dropped it once (not far, approx. 2 feet off the ground) in the case. It died a little over a week later. With the warranty up there was nothing that could be done. The cable is not the best I've seen, I was worried about it from day one but was never really an issue.I would not recommend this drive to anyone who needs to take it everywhere all the time and I would definitely not recommend it without a proper case for it.
Let me start this review by saying, what else can you say about an expansion portable external drive. If you are like me the more space you have the more you need. These 5TB Drives seem to be the max size in the expansion drive market, they should be at least 8 or 10 TBs in size. If you are looking for storage space for your files, this is much cheaper and more secure than stowing your information and files in the "CLOUD" this gives you complete and total control over your data. If you are looking for an expansion external hard drive, always go with the biggest one on the market, believe me, when I say, the more space you have, the more you'll need. This is a no brainer, buy it, you won't be sorry, it even works on game consoles so how can you go wrong.
All my main backup drives are externally powered with an AC adapter, and I needed an affordable, portable one in order to carry around my projects and be able to present them when needed, without the hassle of an adapter and the weight. It's as fast as it could possibly be under the USB 3.0 protocol. It also turned out to be an exact 5TB capacity one. The box is also small enough and could help with carrying it around somewhat protected if you don't have a purpose-built case.
I purchased this drive to travel with me for work. I needed something that would have the capacity for large video files and images. Seagate and Western Digital are my go-to's for external hard drives, but the Seagate was a much better pricepoint and larger capacity than the WD equivalent. Both great products! Just needed a lot of storage in a small drive. With its exFAT file system, it travels seamlessly between my PC and my Mac.
Very pleased with this product. It's small (about the size of a pack of playing cards) but with a large 5TB capacity, perfect for storing my backups. USB powered, so it doesn't need an additional power supply. As long as it lasts indefinitely, I'll be happy.
I have many Seagate Expansion hard drives from 3TB to 10TBI'm trying this new 5TB portable drive - great price $135Can't Speak about durability as I just got it and I am loading it with almost 4tb of movies. When it first started out the speed was around 130 MB/s as the drive fills up it is slowing down. Right now at 3.65TB the speed has slowed to around 80 MB/s.Since this is an archive drive it's more than adequate and pleased with it's small size and no bulky power supply.Best Buy is very competitive on price. often cheaper than you know who,
Sure this drive does its job and it looks nice. But there are two downsides:- The plastic case seems to big for what it holds inside. When you hold it you feel it gives back under the thin plastic, so there is air in there and you know the drive could have been smaller. And for portable drives, size matters. In portable lives every little space in your bag matters.- The stripes on the side. These catch a bit of dirt. But it looks nice.
