But 16T Dell costs about $2500.

Ordered 8 of these drives and two of them would not even start up after installing then in a NAS.Did some trouble shooting with Seagate and they were no help at all. Seagate says that they have a 5 year warranty but they refuse to replace the drives after 2 weeks of working with them in chat sessions and on the phone. I have spent over 3 hours in chat sessions and phone conversions so far. They say they will provide a response within 24-48 hours and when that time has expired they simply send me a new case number to start the clock over again. So far I have multiple case numbers for the same DOA drive which is supposed to be under warranty until 2027 as registered on their web site. The good news is 6 of the drives are still working after a year. From now on I ... MoreOrdered 8 of these drives and two of them would not even start up after installing then in a NAS.Did some trouble shooting with Seagate and they were no help at all. I finally retired a set of Timecapsules and opted for a Synology NAS (DS220+) for Time Machine and other backups. Two 12 TB Ironwolf Pro drives were added assuming that my storage needs will grow over time and the premium for the pro level of reliability seemed reasonable. These may be acceptable drives for a rack in a server room but they aren't suitable for any reasonably quiet environment. They are constantly grumbling in the background. One reviewer likened it to an aquarium bubbler and I can see that analogy as it isn't a constant sound and the volume will raise and lower as it goes through its read/write cycles. Bought 2 of these to mirror each other. Sequential write speeds for both are good which is useful during array rebuilds or other heavy data transfer. Got a steady write speed of 125 MB/s increasing to 138 MB/s, likely due to the heads moving from the inside to the edge of the platters. Bear in mind translates to well over a day for a full rebuild, but that's expected at such a high capacity. Did not test random access speeds.Acoustics - the head movement noise during seeking was louder than I expected, when compared to lower capacity models I have from the same range. Might be something to bear in mind depending where you want to put these.
I ordered a pair of these recently due to them being on sale.I had to return the first pair as they were completely DOA on arrival. And we're not talking "I stuck them in once, and that was it" kind of testing.I seated and re-seated each one in a test slot and neither would even start spinning. I took my NAS offline and cleaned it thoroughly and even tried wiping contacts down with rubbing alcohol.I tried both new IronWolf Pro drives in multiple other computers and even tested additional drives I had lying around to make sure it wasn't maybe the hot-swap drive bays malfunctioning somehow.Every single test failed. So I started a return. After a short call to make sure I wasn't messing up somehow, the process to ship them back and have new ones come replace was relatively easy. The 2nd pair shipped to me worked no problem.I have a Synology DS1520+ that I've been slowly replacing the 5 original 6TB WD Red Pro drives with upgrades as they fail (or run out of space). The features the iron wolf pro drives have are much better than the WD drives. The IronWolf Pro drives are recognized with more useful information by the Synology system. The WDs came up as "generic" in the drive inspector application. There are special testing features that do not exist for the WD drives.Overall the IronWolf Pro drives themselves are 5 stars. The only reason I took a star off was for the hassle of having to do the return as a result (I'm assuming due to the absurdly rare instance of 2 brand new drives being completely DOA) of shipping probably handling them really roughly, causing some sort of failure - even when the drives come packed in bubble wrap, anti-static bag, and other protective packaging. Thanks B&H for making it as easy as realistically possible to return the bad drives and replace them! I continue to come more and more to your business as opposed to many other electronics retailers due to the great level of customer service you maintain!
What all can you really say about them? They're spinning drives and they're big! Definitely worth the money over the 5200rpm drives and a good cost saving point compared to SSD for big/long term storage. SSDs would be great, but for the storage I wanted it would be way too expensive. I bought a 4 pack of these for a RAID 5 configuration, which is giving me 15.69TB of storage. Actual capacity of these drives are 5.46TB each if you are wondering. They're fairly quiet, but you do hear them if you have it near you and they are active. Not the spinning, but more so the head moving. If you put them in a storage device and it's tucked away, you'll never know. Great choice for tons of storage!
I don't have any extreme brand loyalty in mechanical drives. They're becoming fairly uncommon in consumer computers, being generally reserved for long term storage of large amounts of data. USB 3.1 cables can transmit data faster than the drive can read or write the files, making internal SATA HDDs completely optional. Even so, I like to have a couple of traditional mechanical drives inside my computer case. Seagate is a huge supplier to OEMs of mid grade data drives. This specific model is not one of those. This is a big, heavy, solid, fast, and quiet HDD. I don't think they get much better than this.
I've used Synology NAS since around 2003 and pretty much found every drive maker has good and bad runs. HGST was the only drive I could say I had trust in.I've had three of this model (6GB ST6000NE000-2KR101) and so far they made it over 18 mo just fine.I like the extended SMART data branded under Ironwolf on this drive, but I'm holding off judgment, since every failed drive on my Synology I detected due to performance issues (freezing while copying files etc). I look at the SMART diagnostics and always states the drive was healthy. Um, yeah... Maybe the Ironwolf will do better.Bottom line, I just manage risk by only buying my hot spare when my performance tanks so I am not burning a warranty down just to have a hot spare. (I pay expedite costs if urgent.) ... MoreI've used Synology NAS since around 2003 and pretty much found every drive maker has good and bad runs. (I pay expedite costs if urgent.) Second, I only buy drives that have 5 year warranties (more if I can find them) as three year warranties seem to crap out at 3 years, while 5 year warranty drives usually make it to five years. It's worth the up-charge since it reduces the risk to the data. It's a three star drive, while WD, Seagate are all 2 stars. Ironwolf version earns and extra star for at least attempting to provide something better than the useless SMART data.
I recently added to my line of Synology NAS storage devides with the 1522+. I needed an offsite backup solution for redundancy. I purchased the 1522+ to replace my current 918+, used as a storage device for my videography related backups, as an offsite backup solution. The best bang for my buck at B & H for HD size was the 18TB IronWolf Pro. After setting up the two 18TB drives in BTRF format, I began to copy my archives, and current backups to the new NAS. The drives are fast and reliable, and copying went as expected. I have them set in a double drive redundancy, and can only speak to what I have intentionally set them up for. I have about 9TB of video, graphics (still and motion), and other related videography data to store, along with a Plex server running, with about 4TB of videos. I have absolutely no complaints. I believe in redundancy, and this is my fourth NAS from Synology to run the IronWolf Pro series drives, and they, by far, have met my needs. I have yet to have a failed drive with Seagate IronWolf, even after a significant surge struck my original Synology 918+. I pulled the IronWolf HD's and installed them in a new 918+ and they worked like a charm. I expect long life, and lots of backups from these new HD's.
I don't have an ultra-quiet setup, but have not heard a peep from these drives (ordered 2). I was disappointed to see they have 2TB less than advertised available to use, so expect to only have 14.5TB available to start with. I feel like they should advertise the capacity based on what's available to the end user to use. It's definitely misleading. I did hear a few clicks when first fired up, but quiet since. It seems under certain rare conditions, these will make noise when they want to, but have not had an issue with noise otherwise; I only hear my fans. I use them in a RAID 0 config as Plex movie storage. B&H shipped quickly and the drives were packaged well. I will definitely order from B&H again.
