The Ambeo VR 3D microphone from Sennheiser is an outstanding piece of workmanship. This finely crafted mic is a work of art. The stunning audio it captures is of the highest quality and it easily fits in a mono, stereo, binaural, or Ambisonics recording scenario. Admittedly, it is a bit pricey for the casual recordist, but for someone needing to enter the realm of VR or 3D audio, there is no better way. And when you consider that your are getting four high-quality mics for the price, it becomes somewhat of a bargain. I cannot afford the best of everything, but with the Ambeo mic I can, at least, own the best of Ambisonics. Highly recommended for its intended purposes.

My maiden voyage with this mic was an open field on a windy day to record a university marching band. I used a blimp and a dead cat, got zero wind noise and nice clear audio that imported easily into Audition and Premiere.

Very fast setup and great sounding “stereo plus” location microphone
Ambisonic mics are the ideal choice for field recording and live-performance recording. Proper software (eg., Harpex) allows to change the pattern and orientation of the mic in post. Used this way, an Ambisonic replaces a singe mono or stereo mic, so one uses one as a center channel, or two as spaced A/B, or three as center/flanker mics. This mic filled-out my set of three. The Sennheiser Ambeo is mechanically the best-constructed Ambisonic, and it sounds *wonderful.*
The frequency response and sound quality of this microphone, perhaps a little brighter than the Schoeps microphones I typically use, are suitable for classical music. My main application will be for chamber music and small ensembles. Beyond that, who knows, definitely choral music in reverberant venues. The sound over good headphones is incredible, totally immersive, making ordinary stereo sound flat. The microphone comes with a very nice foam insert, but a cardboard box. I bought a Pelican Vault V300 case for this insert, which will be better suited for mobile operations. The included Rycote shock mount has a 3/8-16 threaded socket and and a brass 5/8-32 stand adapter. The brass shines like a flashlight on stage, so I replaced it with a blacken version.
