The earbuds are dust and water-resistant, so you can wear them outdoors without problems. You can listen to music for up to 7.5 hours, so you can listen to your favorite music for an entire day. There's 30 hours of extra battery in the charging case. This way, you can listen to a total of 37.5 hours of music.

It has a textured layer over it giving a higher feeling of luxury. The other cases I have just feel like smooth plastic and although they work fine, I liked this new take on a case. They pair automatically out of the case, though you do have to plug the case in for a few seconds the first time to initialize the buds and power them on. After that, they power on every time you take them out of the case. For comfort, they mesh into the outer ear canal and have silicon fittings to create a seal. However, I found that after longer listening sessions this contact as minimal as it is, still creates a pressure point against the ear and can cause discomfort. I haven't experienced this issue with other earbuds that come more directly out of the ear and rely on inner canal pressure to stay seated.I found the noise cancelling and transparency features left a lot to be desired. I can still hear ample background noise (such as someone speaking or my kids playing in the next room) and couldn't honestly tell a real difference between the noise cancelling being on or off. The transparency feature just turns off any audio input to the earbuds so you can hear someone talking to you. Convenient at the single press of the left earbud, but almost unnecessary because the noise canceling is so ineffective. Finally, funnily enough, the sound quality is really good. I'm amazed at how much bass you can get out of an earbud today. For a Sennheiser product, these earbuds meet my expectations. I think you would probably get better sound clarity of the noise canceling was more immersive. I also noticed no input lag from my phone to the earbuds when streaming music.

I had the Sennheiser Momentum 3 True Wireless. And I thought they were sensational. Since BT 5.3 became available I have these Momentum 4's, Denon's PerL Pro 339s and Soundcore's Liberty 4 NC. These Sennheiser's and the Denon's are priced within $50 of one and the Soundcore's are 1/2 the Sennheiser's price. The Sennheiser's come with a 2 year warranty, the others a single year. Before I did any testing I made sure that I had the current firmware for each and I broke the Sennheiser Momentum 4 overnight with Tara Labs Noise burnin, they lasted 7hrs, not quite the 7.5hrs promised and only 15m more than the Momentum 3s. Sennheiser claims the 4s have 30h battery life (7.5h+22.5h from charging case). Both the Sennheiser's and the Denon's have a custom sound profile, where you listen to sounds/music to create a personal profile. The Denon 'test' tells you more about what they are doing than the Sennheiser 'test', the Sennheiser seems to incorporate more dealing with volume, the Denon more with frequency ranges. In either case I prefered the custom profile to the default. Both the Sennheiser and the Denon's have a custom 5-band EQ. The Denon's can be combined with the custom profile, with the Sennheiser it's a one or the other proposition (too bad). The Denon's have an Immersion Mode which is said to improve the 3D soundstage, I try this later. Soundcore has a 8 band EQ and a similar sound profiling tool which is more like an audiologists test tool (can you hear this tone, how loud is this...) and their EQ can be combined with the custom sound profile.I listened to all 3 pairs from an iPhone 15 pro and an Android 13 Tablet w/Poweramp. All 3 earbuds have active ANC and all support a form of transparency (you can hear someone speaking to you with the earbuds on). The Sennheiser and the Denon's ANC performed adequately and Soundcore was not nearly as good. All 3 earbuds seemed to weigh about the same, all claimed similar battery life (7-8h). The Denon's are physically the largest, and the big part goes up, the Sennheiser's and the Soundcore's are designed to hang on your ear with the big part down. I found the Sennheiser's had a better fit when moving vigorously, but when just seated the Denon's were less noticeable (easier to wear all day). The Soundcore's moves around a bit requiring me to reseat them occasionally. No clear winner, easy to wear any of them on a long flight. I tried all 3 next to a running A/C unit to test the ANC none were perfect still a some "engine" noise the Soundcore was the worst of the 3, a toss up after that. Then I listened to Boston's first album; switching between the 3 earbuds now and then. Then Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon and Foghat's Fool for the City, A little Warren Zevon, Queen, Rush, Yes and Zeppelin. And I went between my iPhone and my Tablet (w/aptX), I tried to match sound levels, which was harder than I'd anticipated. The best bass across all the music was Sennheiser Momentum 4's. It was a little punchier, the Denon's were a close second. And the Soundcore's bass was similar (but a bit thinner) on the iPhone but lost out noticeably from the Android Tablet. The highs from the Sennheiser's were the cleanest, making horns sound the best. This is where the Soundcore's biggest weakness showed up, the ethereal voices on DSOTM didn't float in the same way they did on the Denon's and the Sennheiser's. The spoken words on the Denon's sounded better with their Immersion mode enabled, the Sennheiser's were a close second. From my iPhone I thought the mid's of the Sennheiser's were slightly cleaner than the Denon's. But the other way around from my tablet (this surprised me and I repeated my listening tests). Clearly the Sennheiser's sounded better from my iPhone and the Denon's from my Tablet (same source material). The Sennheiser's offer something called sound zones, which can be set/changed based on GPS locations, so you could have a profile for the office, your home, the ballpark, any place you frequent. An interesting concept that I really didn't get to test. But the best implementation of a feature was the Sennheiser's transparency setting, so that when you talk with someone, how you can hear them, it just lowers the volume of the music. I can think of circumstances where I might use one or the other (mute), but it's nice to have a choice (I'd definitely program this for 3 taps and hold). The Sennheiser's and the Denons's are both exceptional earbuds, in many cases it was hard to tell them apart. From an iPhone I'd say the Sennheiser's were the winner and from and Android tablet (aptX) the Denon's were my preference. But given both of these are twice the cost of the Soundcore's the Soundcore's are the best bargain. After listening for several hours, I found all of them very comfortable.Sennheiser has improved upon Momentum 3 slightly, but I would not spend $100 more to get the 4' over the 3's. IMHO the 3's and 4's are one of the best sets of earbuds that you can get today (if you have an iPhone). The Denon's are great, but possibly a little overpriced compared to the Sennheiser Momentum 4s, I don't think I'd spend more to get them.

So I am on this odyssey for the perfect headphones and after adding Apple's AirPod Pro 2, and Bose's QC Ultra earbuds to my arsenal, it was clear that the functionality of the Airpods was unmatched (with iOS devices) while the QC Ultra sounded better at the expense of missing comfort features. So, the Sennheiser True Wireless Momentum 4 (TWM4) became more interesting. The unwieldy name aside, the "true wireless" is essentially reserved to earbuds and Momentum 4 continues a respectable line by audio veteran Sennheiser. At first contact, the case for the TWM4 is taller than the QC Ultra while still feeling smaller. It's of course bigger in almost all aspects than the AirPod Pro 2. Wireless charging (of the case) is fortunately included, an odd omission from the QC Ultra, even if the charge level is not reported to the Smartphone unlike the AirPods. The App is probably one of the more minimalistic of any of them and sub-sequentially comfort features like conversation awareness or spatial audio are absent. At least the latter is greatly compensated by an excellent sound profile. Custom profiles are possible but neither intuitive nor necessary. In my opinion, the TWM4 are the best sounding earbuds in this mix (only bested by a recent glance at the Denon Perl Pro). I think neither are sounding bad or mediocre. Yet, the punchy base and crystal clear separation is coming out on top, even compared to the Bose QC Ultra. This is also based on personal preference, but to that degree it's my verdict. So, the Sennheiser True Wireless Momentum 4 may not get the buzz but are worthy competitors for the beast earbuds in this price range (under $400). They're not perfect, but the wireless charging case (yes it's a big deal to me) and the punchy sound profile (my main reason) make it an excellent choice.

Excellent music quality and ANC, so-so for calls
9 May 2024

I’ve been using Sennheiser Momentum 4 over ear headphones for a while and the comfort, sound, and features are all top notch. They are the undisputed king of my headphone collection. That positive experience compelled me to try these Momentum 4 buds to determine whether they are just as good. No wall or Qi charger is included. I assumed setup would be easy due to my already having the Sennheiser Smart Control app installed on my smartphone. However, I opened the app, clicked add a new device, and received an error stating “something went wrong”. I closed the app, opened my phone’s Bluetooth settings, and manually paired the buds in there. They were immediately detected by the app when I relaunched it.The app indicated the buds needed a firmware update, so I clicked to apply. Again, I encountered the “something went wrong” error message and the update failed. Seeing the same vague error twice within a few minutes didn’t exactly fill me with confidence. I tried again, but the app falsely indicated the firmware was already up to date. Luckily, it was another easy to resolve issue. I simply closed the app and waited a few minutes. When I re-opened the app, the pending firmware update notification reappeared, and I was able to apply the update which took about five minutes to complete. I haven’t encountered any similar errors or issues since.Once the buds were finally charged, paired, and updated, I tried them on. Both buds surprisingly fit into my ears securely and comfortably with a good seal using the preinstalled tips and fins. I confirmed proper fit using the in-app fit test. Additional sized tips and fins are included if needed. I had a television playing in the background at moderate volume and could still clearly hear it when I first inserted the buds. I opened the Sennheiser app, clicked noise cancellation, and the room instantly went near silent. It was a little jarring how much environmental noise these buds immediately blocked even without music playing. These have the best ANC I’ve encountered on buds so far. That’s even considering my white pro buds, which previously held the best bud ANC title in the household. When I need to hear the surrounding environment, transparency mode works well with barely any detectable white noise. I haven’t had an opportunity to try these in extremely noisy environments yet, but based on what I’ve witnessed so far, I can’t wait to try them on a flight soon. The ANC was impressive but the real treat was when I began playing music. I love the default neutral sound profile. I’m not referring to neutral in the flat non-appealing way, but rather in a way where everything sounds nicely balanced. No tones overpower others. There’s no sloppy or distorted sounding bass, no shrill highs, and no muddy mids. Everything pops perfectly in sync with impressive fidelity. These buds are great for complex musical arrangements and instantly became my new go to buds for jazz. I decided to test the low end to see how hip hop sounded and these again didn’t disappoint. Most songs had tight, impactful bass and even the deeper frequencies sound good. Overall, it is a great listening experience and these buds easily proved their ability to handle multiple genres each presenting unique sound challenges. If the default sound profile isn’t quite to the liking, the app has a five-band equalizer and bass boost option for further fine tuning if desired. The controls are the usual touch/tap style inputs that control ANC, volume, answering calls, and music playback. Touch controls can be disabled in the app, a convenient option for active use situations such as workouts, where buds may frequently have to be readjusted and merely touching a bud can result in unintentional commands like pausing the music, disabling ANC, or advancing the track. Battery life is good. The charging case reliably keeps the buds topped off, allowing me to listen to music for a couple hours daily for several days before needing to recharge the case.I don’t typically use regular buds for phone calls and online meetings, but tested these on a few calls to judge call sound quality. Surprisingly, that’s where I was least impressed. My voice sounds fine on the other end and the noise cancelling mics do a good job of suppressing background noise so the other parties hear me clearly. On my end however, callers sound flat and occasionally muffled. It’s not terrible but voices aren’t as clear sounding as some of my other buds. These are good enough for the rare occasions I need to use them for unexpected calls I receive while listening, but they wouldn’t be my first choice for business calls or video conferencing.Overall, these buds impressed me and are every bit the bud equivalent of the fantastic Momentum 4 headphones. Call quality was slightly underwhelming, but I seldom use buds like these for calls anyhow. So, it’s not a big issue for me. Sennheiser knocked it out of the park in all other areas and I’m looking forward to countless hours of music listening enjoyment with these outstanding sounding buds.

These, while on the more comfortable end of the spectrum, I still found to be uncomfortable after wearing for an hour or two, but that's not terribly surprising for me. I did try the different sized earcups and the ones that came fit best. It also comes with different sized "fins", which are silicon rings around the earbuds that help secure the buds in your ear.You really need to install the Sennheiser smart connect app to get the most out of these. In the app you can control the nose cancellation (On, anti-wind, off), "transparency" level, customize touch controls, and a fit test (to ensure the earbuds are well fit in your ear). You can adjust the EQ in the app, including turning on Bass Boost (which I recommend). I also recommend going into the settings, and setting the audio resolution to "high resolution" or "Lossless". it defaults to standard, which may help bluetooth range, stability and the battery life of the earbuds, but if you're listening to high quality audio you'll notice the difference. The app also has other battery settings to prolong playtime by disabling power-hungry aptX codec, but also to protect the battery health by slowing down charging and limiting the maximum charge. Unless you use these all day everyday, turning on battery protection mode is probably a good idea.Audio quality and noise cancellation are great. Still not as good as over-ear headphones, but among the best I've ever used. I've been using them for a couple hours a day for the last 2-3 days, and the case battery is still at 80%, so I'm really not concerned about battery life at all.Really it's hard to find any fault with these, except maybe comfort as I mentioned before.

Adaptive Noise Cancellation, Transparency Mode, wireless charging, long battery life, quick charge for when you forget to charge the case, amazing sound, etc. While they look and sound similar to the prior TW3, they have improvements in the batteries and the connection codecs that make the guts better than before and are more future-proof for improved connections.Highlights:* Improved battery for longer and more reliable use.* Updated Bluetooth codecs for better sound and future-proof updates.* Better active noise cancellation.* All of the same excellent features of the TW3 including wireless charging and comfortable wearing.* Multi-point connections.* Flexible customizations via the Sound Control app.* ... MoreThese high-end true wireless earbuds have it all! Once connected to your device of choice, use the app to customize the sound profile, the function of taps on each bud, update firmware, etc… Everything seems easy to understand and apply.Usage:Take the buds out of their case and put in your ears. They connect quickly and easily and resume whatever sound profile you last used (or one based on location if set up that way). Defaults are to have the adaptive ANC on normally and then a single tap on the left earbud will pause playback and turn on the Transparency mode - a feature I really like. The audio quality is superb by default but can be tweaked as much as you like.As an owner of the prior model (TW3), the sound seems really close. Most of the improvements in this TW4 over the prior TW3 are related to the batteries and Bluetooth connections, so there shouldn’t be much of a noticeable difference in normal day-to-day use. The upgraded batteries now last longer, charge faster and are more reliable in the long-term. I personally had issues with the TW3’s batteries and needed to replace my buds under warranty, so I appreciate the change in batteries with the TW4.The upgraded Bluetooth codecs claim to future-proof these earbuds so they can be updated later to work with Bluetooth connections that are more efficient, have higher quality sound and new sharing features. For now, though, they work just as great as before and may be even more robust connecting to your devices.Putting the TW4 side-by-side with the TW3 is hard to tell the difference. So if you tried and liked the TW3, this TW4 is everything you loved but with better batteries and newer Bluetooth connection codecs. Upgrading to the TW4 from the TW3 is not a slam-dunk, but if you value the future-proof connection ability of the TW4 and/or had issues with the TW3’s batteries, these would be a nice update. By the way, the ear tips have an updated design that makes them easier to clean if some ear wax gets in there (which they always tend to do).Overall:Everything that the amazing TW3 had in terms of fit, function and sound quality, but with improvements in the batteries and updates that future-proof the Bluetooth connections. Despite their chunky look, these earbuds are comfortable to wear for hours, sound amazing and the ANC and Transparency modes are top-notch. If you’ve been waiting for a time to jump in to Sennheiser’s best true wireless earbuds, these are for you!

MOMENTUM to be the best!
12 May 2024

For my review of the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 Earbuds, I want to simply state right away that these are some of the best sounding earbuds I have ever listened to. Like most earbuds, it does require some customization using an app on your smartphone. But even straight out of the box, I liked the sound immediately and once I changed some settings, I can’t get over how great they sound. Once the app “Sennheiser Smart Control” was installed on my iPhone, I was immediately alerted to a firmware upgrade. Once the app “Sennheiser Smart Control” was installed on my iPhone, I was immediately alerted to a firmware upgrade. From there I was treated to all kinds of customizable features, including noise cancellation, transparency level, touch control, a fit test, sound zones, and finally, My Sound. My Sound gives you the option to use either an editable standard 5-band equalizer or something called “Sound Personalization”. After some experimentation, I chose to use Sound Personalization. Apparently, this might be a feature that came with a recent update as I was unable to find much documentation about it. Basically, you move a cursor around a 2-dimensional grid diagram until you find a sound stage that appeals to you and save. I found placing the dot in the lower right quadrant worked best for my ears.Once set up with the Smart Control app, the sound coming from these earbuds is amazing! The bass and drums are tight and punchy but not distorted or boomy, and the mid/high frequencies are crisp and clear but not harsh. Hard to believe such sounds are possible from something so small. It makes me anxious to listen to my favorite songs as it brings them all to new life. I enjoy a wide range of music from Aerosmith to ZZ Top and with the latest lossless Bluetooth quality, I am blown away by how good everything sounds. I am not technically an audiophile, but I am an avid music listener and I really like what I hear from these Sennheiser earbuds. The earphones themselves are beautifully designed and come in an elegant fabric-covered case which is rechargeable using either a provided USB-C cable or you can use wireless charging. The earbuds come with several ear tips to fit every ear. I found the ones it came with fit perfectly. There are LED lights on each earbud that provide status information as well. I found an additional use as I dropped an earbud on the carpet in the dark and was able to locate it immediately because of the LED light. I find the fit to be very comfortable and have no complaints after wearing the earbuds for several hours. Touch controls are simple and easy to learn by reading the manual once, but controls can be customized should you not like how they are configured.I am not one to make use of all the available features like low latency audio, noise cancellation and Auracast, but these earbuds have all the latest technology and more. I’ll leave that for others to discuss, I need to get back to listening to some Emerson, Lake and Palmer!

Masters of sound

A couple of decades ago, I remember going to a store to pick up my first audiophile headphones. These headphones lasted for several years and they have always set the bar for those who followed. The brand? Sennheiser. It's 2024 and Sennheiser is back in full force with some excellent products. Like the Momentum 4 ear buds I've gotten and let me tell you, the company still knows how to make excellent hardware. The box doesn't look flashy or out of this world, but if you take some time to look at the back of the box, you should get an idea of what these babies can do. They come jam-packed with the latest tech: Bluetooth 5.4, Adaptive ANC, LE Audio and Auracast. The list is much longer, but you get the idea. One thing caught my eye though and it's not necessarily something you'd look at. Sennheiser offers 2 years of warranty on their Momentum ear buds. To me, that's a clear sign that they care about their customers and the continued quality upkeep of their products. In the box are the ear buds in their case, a short USB-C to USB-A charging cable, a set of replacement tips and a separate sleeve with 3 other sizes of tips. There's a quick manual to get you started as well as other pertinent documentation. The case is covered in a textile wrap. I love the idea, but you have to ask yourself how long until it turns into a dust and dirt magnet. The buds look rather big at first glance, but once in your ear, they are very comfortable to wear, which is mostly due to the shape which locks them in place in your ear with a slight twist.Once connected and hooked up to your device (I would recommend to use a smart phone first as that seems to be the default platform for ear buds these days), you will be welcomed by some of the clearest, smoothest sound you can get. The frequency range is amazing with clean highs, wide mids and round and bouncy bass. Some might dislike the chimey highs, but you can change all of this with the dedicated companion app. I spent several hours listening to various genres and I couldn't find a track that would show any deficiencies in that area. On top of having a beautiful sound, the comfort is also there, even after hours, your ears don't feel like someone went to town with a cheese grater on them.Another great aspect is the amount of customization you have to make the sound truly yours. The EQ works very well and you can even tweak the sound rendering to a higher frequency and bit size or activate other helpful options. The active noise canceling tech used by Sennheiser is one of the best on the market and switching it on and off is as easy as tapping your ear bud which doesn't interrupt your listening experience, but allows you to listen to someone talking to you. If you're a casual user, you can also simply apply the presets and not ever have to dive into the belly of the beast, without ever sacrificing quality. The battery charge is close to what it claims, around 30 hours (I clocked in about 26 hours). Charging doesn't take very long either, you can get a good amount of charge in less than an hour.Bottom line: Sennheiser is back, making great sounding and high quality audio available for everyone. The price tag is right where it should be as these ear buds are better than most other brands in the same price segment. If you love music and you want some ear candy, go for it and by the Momentum 4. Excellent product!

Pretty big case, but pretty small considering
15 May 2024

I have one complaint that I’ll get out of the way. The case is big, maybe not gigantic and it may not bug you but it is significantly bigger than other earbuds, now what you get out of that is may be a trade off you willing for, I certainly am but if that is a major requirement before sound quality then just know that.Noise cancellation:Hands down the best I’ve used (First headset of this brand). I’m used to a very faint vibration that can bug me after awhile from noise cancellation. These, it was gone, not mostly gone, but just gone, it’s the first time I haven’t noticed it at all, I’ve used others that weren’t at a level that bugged me, but these are on a completely different level. These, it was gone, not mostly gone, but just gone, it’s the first time I haven’t noticed it at all, I’ve used others that weren’t at a level that bugged me, but these are on a completely different level. So if you like me and can hear/feel noise cancellation, give these a go as they have become my favorite.Adaptive Noise:Depending on what you find important this isn’t the best, I turned it up to high in the app and it is still better, but it seems to want to prioritize music first, which normally I agree with but my five year old doesn’t come through that well and I end up pulling the headphone out, which may be better anyway so that he knows I’m giving him my attention, but that is a different story. As for everything else, it brings through voices quite well normally, but they aren’t super amplified like other brands, its more of a combination of noise cancelling and ambience accentuation. It will muffle something like a fan background noise, but background music comes through. I like it but it could use some improvement is the best way I can put it. But it is in the top two for adaptive noise for me. There are also three settings; off, on and anti-wind; all that do exactly what the setting name implies.Fit:There are several buds for different sized ears but the ones out of the box worked great for me and lock I nice and tight.Bluetooth ConnectivityIt doesn’t lose connection anywhere in my house (I have a 2700 two story house so not giant but not small). I can go out to the car, and it is still connected solidly. If my phone is in my back pocket, it still works. One time one of the buds didn’t connect, however just touching it made it turn on, it was at this point I realized it is extremely useful that both tell you they are on and connected individually. Also, they can be connected to two devices and switch between the two, however they don’t switch if one is active back to the other one. Which is exactly how it should be. So, no interrupted meetings for a phone notification if you have the connected to your phone and computer. Also, it supports two devices.Charging:The battery lasts forever it seems like. Sometime a big case doesn’t mean a big battery, in this case it does. It also supports wireless charging and worked on two different generic wireless chargers I have at my house. The earbuds themselves last for hours, longer than I can keep them in.Sound:There doesn’t seem to be much different in earbuds these days from low end to high end, you end up just paying for the name in the worst case or maybe noise cancellation, integration, or other features in the best case. If you are into lossless music these should be at the top of your list. It does make Spotify sound better but there is only so much you can work with there. Something like Tidal, amazon music, or Apple music that offers lossless or UltraHD or whatever they call it really allows these to shine I am absolutely in love the sound quality for size with these. One thing to keep in mind is your phone needs to support lossless music which, I believe apt x adaptive is the recognized lossless codec. The App:Usually the app isn’t anything special, however the amount of control it gives you over everything is amazing. The equalizer can be customized, there is a bass boost, a podcast setting, and a bunch of other presets that are pretty standard for good equalizer apps/settings. The podcast one is not standard from what I’ve seen in the past. It brings the voices out and makes them loud and clear, it makes up for sometimes not perfect recording settings that can be on YouTube or Spotify. Touch controls can be customized as well as auto pause for transparency and such. There is even a sound zones setting, I set the noise control to transparent when I get to work but I couldn’t change the equalizer to podcast sadly as that setting is helpful in meetings. The settings tab shows firmware updates, but even better there is an audio resolution as well it shows the Codec. There is a battery eco setting that I don’t have on as audio quality is more important to me, but I did turn on battery protection mode which prevents charging to 100% and slows down charging, I still don’t have any issue with running out of power after making these changes.Overall:For truly wireless ear buds deliver an amazing experience in audio. If you are going to keep the bit rate at low, data saver one, and so one that degrades the audio experience, these may not deliver the value that they could. If you are interested in utilizing these to their full potential, I believe they provide an awesome value.
