Sharpal The Extra Fine Diamond Sharpening Steel with 1200 grit (9 microns) industrial mono crystalline diamonds electroplated onto a steel base. Industrial mono crystalline diamonds is the hardest sharpening abrasives. It can sharpen most any super hard material including carbide, high-speed steel, ceramic and the newer materials being used by most knife manufacturers. It is long enough to hone almost any knife in your block from a small chef's knife to a large butchering knife. Unlike a knife "sharpener", a honing steel is used by professionals after each use to roll the edge back to its original position and keep it at the ideal angle for maximum sharpness.

I like the 10", 1200 grit diamond surface, it's ideal for putting a good sharp working edge on your knives! I found it easy to use on my pocket knives and large and small kitchen knives, putting a almost shaving edge on each one in short order. As with any diamond sharpening rod or stone the more you use it the better the sharpening surface becomes as long as you do the occasional cleaning of the metal deposits that build up from repeated sharpening of your knives. It's a great value for the money in my opinion and the handle makes it easy to control the angle of the edge on any given blade. Heavy weight rod, with mono - crystalline diamonds that should last for years even with regular use. Note that initially the diamonds feel coarse, but after honing a few knives, the diamond surface will smooth out a bit yet retain its honing capability and actually give a finer edge to knives. A traditional steel honing rod does not actually remove steel. Its purpose is to straighten or realign the edge of a knife. When a knife hits a bone or cuts onto a hard surface, the very edge will tend to roll over the tiniest bit. You cannot see this, but you can often feel this rollover - it is like the burr that forms on an edge during sharpening on waterstones or whet stones. The traditional steel will bend that edge back into alignment. The Sharpal diamond honing rod will both realign the edge and remove a tiny amount of the steel to give you that cutting edge all chefs desire.
