On a 1x10 with a 42x11 cassette the actuator arm rests just a couple millimeters from the cassette when in the highest gear. If you have horizontal dropouts like on a surly it makes it very difficult to remove the rear wheel, in addition to it being concerning how close the derailleur sits to the cassette. shifts fine though.

If you're in the market for an inexpensive derailleur, Shimano cannot be beat. I've got mine in a 1x10 setup with an 11-42 cassette, works flawlessly. Great derailleur at a very affordable price.

The 5120 rear derailleur offers flexibility and excelllent shifting for under $50. The trade-off is that is heavier than costlier options: about 105 grams heavier than 11-speed XT. But it's compatible with both 10- and 11-speed Shimano MTB drivetrains, and has an effective clutch to maintain even chain tension over gnarly turf. Max rear sproket is 46 teeth in a 1X system, and 42 teeth in a 2X. Use the 5100 if you want 1X 51 teeth.
Built up a bike and had a short cage but wouldn’t work for an 11-32 cassette. Replaced with this one and a chain. Worked great. Plus it was on sale and shipped quick.
easy to set up and flexible for 1x or 2x - has a clutch . Shimano mid level parts are always top notch
Bought this a few months ago as I was changing from 1x12 to 1x10. So happy I did, Indexing is so much better on a 1x10 setup and derailleurs are less than half the price of a similar 1x12 one. Bent this derailleur recently in the woods, bike shop straightened it for me and it's being perfect since. If that was a 1x12, it would never be right again
Purchased this derailleur to replace my older one so I could use a bigger cassette range on my 10 speed mountain bike. Easy to install and works great!
