I needed to replace S-PHYRE 900 era shoes and the current 903 equivalent is about $500 a pair. I was sort-of willing to go there, but I decided to try a couple of other shoes first before making that big a purchase. Good shoe for the value. Boa works as it is designed. However, the binding strap seems to be non functional - with respect to providing additional tightening and support. Result is lots of room and no snugness causing my feet have some minor float/slopiness when pedaling. Could be a sizing issue. I've tried 44 and 45 in the RC 300 series which neither were a good fit. So I moved up to RC502. Bottom line, this will work for my current cyling regimen - cardio riding 48- 75 miles a week.

Their definitely meant for narrow feet. And, it’s a good fit; at least for me. I went from a size 47 to a size 48. The size 48 allowed thicker socks for winter cycling; also, more toe room !!! Shimano quality IS present !!! However, the sole plate heel and toe protrusions (right wording ?) could be more substantial; understandable at this price point. Satisfied 75 year old cyclist; about 2000 miles a season on a 1980 Schwinn Voyageur 11.8 - 6 speed. Thanks

First the negatives: for some reason, these shoes do not work with my Favero Assioma pedals + Look Keo cleats. They do work with the Expedo RC7 cleats in the Assioma pedals (the ones the pedals came with). I think it's because the bottom of the shoe is flatter than my previous shoe, and so torquing the cleat warps it in a way that prevents engagement of the pedals. This isn't necessarily the fault of the shoe, though. Other negative is minor: the BOA dial only goes one way - the BOA on my previous shoe went both directions, which was nice for on the fly adjustment.Positives:If you have wide feet, just click 'buy'. These shoes are WIDE (I have 4E flippers and they fit me), and fit true to the Shimano size chart (their conversion is different than others, check their chart specifically). I don't know why the description says they run small - they fit me true to size. They are light, stiff, comfortable, breathable, and look much better than I expected. The upper BOA enclosure + velcro strap is like a glove where it counts without also over-tightening across the wide area of the foot. I'm normally of the camp that paying more for shoes is pretty pointless for the average cyclist, but I'm very happy I went one step up from the $100 range of my previous shoe.
Full disclosure, I have never been a fan of the full BOA system. I never believed in the efficacy of BOA for the entire shoe. This shoe has a Velcro strap toward the toes, with the BOA lacing for the top 2 closures. This is idea…I can leave it a touch looser towards the toes and tighten the upper…ideal for my wider feet!I found this to run true to size. I wear 12 in most shoes but like 11.5 in cycling shoes (EU equivalent, of course!) and found these to work perfectly.Some complain these are ‘not stiff enough’. Although my racing years are behind me, I see zero loss of power, and the additional comfort and lack of foot pain vs a stiff shoe (for me) makes these my shoe of choice. The old Shimano shoe lived a long and prosperous life. It went out in all kinds of weather. When I bled, it got some of the spilled blood. It kept my foot on the pedal for over 100K miles, pushing my energy into the drive train of several bikes. Most importantly, Shimano RC47 fit my foot like a glove on my hand. Now that it is retiring, a new Shimano is ready to take the challenge. But not the same as its 47 cm King. The young Prince is 48 cm. Just enough to hold the same feet on the same pedal. Bigger is better...because it fits! So, when you order your new Shimano shoe to replace your old ones, your feet have not grown. But the shoe has. Long live the New RC5 shoe!
Quality and fit are spot on with other Shimano shoes. I wear 10.5 US shoes and always get 45 in Shimano, and these are perfect. The Boas are good but not great, as they don't support micro-adjustments and the ratchet isn't reversed between left and right so you have to remember to turn differently. Finally, the sole isn't the stiffest and you can feel a bit of the cleat pressure during all-out efforts, but plenty good and comfortable for easier going.
My Shimano Men's RC5 Wide Road Cycling Shoes were delivered in a timely manner. I ordered the Eur 42 size Wide-Large (US 8.3). I removed my old 3-screw cleat and reattached it on the RC5 without any issues and adjusted them to a position, according to my pedaling style. Shoe fit was spot-on, the "Wide" really made a difference in comfort... I initially went to an REI store and tried the "normal" (Non-Wide 42) and the fit was tight. They did not have the Wide, so I had to order them from the REI Coop store. I was lucky to get it at a Labor Day sale, but technically, the shoe with the Boa dial laces gave the shoe a nice snug fit. It would have been nice to have a 2nd Boa dial for the front portion of the shoe, but it had velco (which as sufficient). Great fit. Sold on the Boa adjustment. Light weight. Well made. Went from 42 Northwave (NW) to 43 Sh-Rc502. Extra cm feeling good on long rides. Slight wrinkle on side when cinched down ...hmm..but not a hot spot after numerous 60+ rides. Adequate venting.
