This is a very good reel, very powerful and smooth. I would say this is the best bang for the buck not only for the new fisherman, but also for professionals like high end private charter boat caps. After reading some information on shimano website, i would view this reel as a down sized talica.

Bought and used for bottom fishing out in the gulf on a 2 day trip. Handled everything very well! Went with the 16ii. Great two speed conventional reel and the quality is typical Shimano. Drag is solid and reel is built very well. Paired it with Shimano Tallus. Probably pick up the 12 down the road.

Light reel with a great handle that provides good leverage for large fish. Very smooth operation. Strong drag. The first time out I reeled in a number of 15 lb grouper and large snapper and had no issue with a 36" amberjack.

I recently completed a Dry Tortugas Trip. I primary used this Shimano Speedmaster II (16) during this trip. I used a 65lb braid with a 100yd Top shot of 80lb Mono. Was a able to fight with a sandbar shark, believed to be around 10 ft long. Also used this reel to catch 20 LB Mutton and Red Snappers at about 270ft depth. Also brought up some Grouper With ease as well. During all times the reel worked like a charm. Excellent Drag and easy operability. No complaints at all.
Shimano quality at a great price, no spare spool but you can buy separately, look great on the rods and ridiculously good line lay due to the slow oscillation. Good to go straight from the box. Shop around for a deal, you won't be disappointed.
Bought this last fall, 2019, thinking "How can this reel be any good at this price." It is made to handle pretty much any tuna caught in the ocean charter boats out of San Diego, Southern California. It worked perfectly with the bluefin's I nailed. The drag was smooth and tight, as well as no slipping. The 2 speed is a very nice feature. This is surely well worth the money. Are there better reels on the market, maybe, but not at this price.
THE SHIMANO SPM1211 IS A PERFECT 2 SPEED LEVER DRAG REEL FOR THOSE DEEP SEA MONSTERS.THE ALL METAL 0NE PIECE FRAME DOESN'T FLEX (LIKE SOME OF THOSE GRAPHITE FRAMED REELS) WHEN FIGHTING A BIG FISH. THE LEVER DRAG IS GREAT FOR THOSE LONG RUNS. THIS REEL IS A PERFECT SIZE. IT HOLDS A NICE AMOUNT OF 50 LB BRAID. I COULDN'T RESIST BUYING THIS REEL WHEN I FIRST LAID MY EYES ON IT. TACKLE DIRECT'S PRICE CAN'T BE BEAT AND WITH THEIR FREE SHIPPING IT'S A NO BRAINER!!! IF YOUR IN NEED OF A PERFECT CONVENTIONAL (BOAT) REEL, I WOULD STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU LOOK INTO THE SHIMANO SPM12II REEL------YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!!!!
Love my speedmaster. We fish hard over here in Exmouth and having a little bit extra speed gets them past the sharks sometimes. I’ve trolled with this reel and used it for bottom bouncing. Can’t rate this reel high enough. A budget game reel with high end performance.
I had researched online for a new high-speed overhead reel for ocean jigging, targeting species like dog-tooth tuna, giant trevally, and big reds. The two-speed Shimano Speedmaster 12 LD II seemed to fit the bill nicely, with heaps of drag, a low gear for cranking heavy fish, and massive line capacity. Plus it is quality gear from Shimano. I couldn't justify an Ocea Jigger reel. Then the BCF club price plus a discount code meant I ended up paying only a bit more than half RRP. No other store could match that. Now I've just got to wait for my next offshore trip!
No lefthanded. Level wind 2 speed reels. Not even in lefthanded electric reels. There's a market out there.
