Shimoda Action x Mirrorless Core Unit V2 - Parisian Nights
The Mirrorless Medium Core Unit was designed for users who prefer to shoot with smaller systems built around mirrorless, rangefinder or compact DSLR cameras. Using a unique fold-over upper rim, this Core Unit allows for a more efficient use of space which can potentially lead to a lower overall backpack profile. When using shorter cameras and lenses, the 3 cm (1.2 in.) rim folds down so you gain a little more volume out of your backpack or compress it further. This also provides an extra point of equipment protection along the Core Unit’s outer edge. When your gear requires the full Core Unit height, just fold the sides back up to the standard open-rim configuration. The padded EVA walls and sensibly designed set of EVA dividers allow the perfect gear fit. The Mirrorless Medium Core Unit is designed to work in conjunction with our Small Core Unit, which can be positioned above or below the Medium unit to give you the same total volume as a Large Core Unit. This allows much greater flexibility for different shooting missions. The Mirrorless Medium Core Unit unit comes standard with a removable Skin.

Good quality product as expected from Shimoda but too small and cumbersome.I'm using it with my Explorer 30, which fits nicely but wish they made it 4inches longer as there's enough room left in the bag to accommodate a slightly larger unit. Also, it's way overpriced for its size and practicality. Two stars at best; you can do better than this Shimoda!

I like the Shimoda items a lot, but this could be improved on. I wish some of the dividers came in more than two sizes and the shape was slightly longer. It would also be nice if you could stick some of the divider to the exterior. The core is not quite large enough if you carry two full-frame cameras and telephoto lens.

I purchased this medium mirrorless core unit with a Shimoda X70 to house my Nikon D780 (Shimoda states the mirrorless cores are compatible with DSLR bodies w/o vertical grips) 14-24,24-70 & 70-200 f2.8's and allow for plenty of room in the bag for overnight camping gear. Upon receiving my bag I realized that while the core unit fits the D780 body perfectly fine. It is too shallow to allow me to stand up the 14-24 & 24-70 vertically in the core unit (or even my 24-120mm F4). I attempted to rearrange the dividers to lay the lenses down instead. But there was not enough room for all 3 lenses & the body in that configuration. For some context I compared this to my Fstop Medium dslr icu which I've used with a Fstop Tilopa the past 9 years. The length & width are almost identical, but it's the depth that really matters (at least for me and how I pack my gear). If you own a mirrorless set up with multiple pro 2.8 or f4 zooms that use a 77mm+ front element, I would recommend upsizing to a large mirrorless core to give you enough room to lay 2-3 lenses down + 1 body. Or opt for the medium dslr core unit to allow for enough depth to store lenses like a 24-70 f2.8 or 24-120 f4 vertically.Pros:- Solid construction; I would say the vertical walls and dividers feel more solid than the Fstops- Well made.- Side access is an awesome feature for quick access.Cons:- Calling this "mirrorless" unit is potentially a little misguided. Unfortunately pro glass for mirrorless isn't any smaller (or any lighter for our backs sake) than it is for dslr's and may not fit as well as you think. Depth matters! *that's what she said*- Side access can be difficult to use with a small dslr/large mirrorless and 77mm+ dia. lens for the same reasons.

This core unit is of the quality we come to expect from Shimoda. This is a smaller version of the large/extra large using which helps me to make more space available for other things in my X70 backpack. With the extra large unit, the space available in the top of the x70 isn't enough for me to get my camping gear in it, but with the medium, I'm able to get my tent, sleeping bag, cookset, stove, etc. in the top of the x70. The medium holds my S1R and 24-105mm lense, my GH5 and a lens, batteries for both, cleaning kit, and a few other small items. The medium is a good option if, like me, you need to make more room for backpacking gear, but still need to carry one or two camera bodies and lenses. The quality and durability of the medium is the same as the extra large unit that came with my x70. I would recommend this if you have an x series backpack and need to have more room in the top for camping gear.
I have a mirrorless camera with lens, plus one more lens, lens filters, flash trigger, 2 flashes, gels, extra batteries and chargers for both the camera and flashes and a little room left. This fits great in my 21 liter Goruck GR1 with about 4.5 inches to spare at the top of the bag. There's enough room for a rolled up wind breaker or lunch.
Perfect use in a Shimoda E30 backpack. I had purchased a large unit (through the intro sale) and found it too bulky and too restrictive. The medium works perfectly and I can see the virtues of the design by Shimoda. I now use the large Core Unit for storage of my lenses in my office.
The Shimoda Medium Mirrorless Core Unit Version 2 is part of the best camera backpack system ever. If you travel often, as I do, this system is perfect. Just pull the entire core unit out of the backpack going through security. It is so simple and ingenious!
I've churned thru may camera bags in my career. While no bag is perfect, my Shimoda along with this insert has been a game changer. It's extremely well built with a high attention to detail.
I use Sony mirrorless systems. The size of this was extremely disappointing. I was unable to fit my kit in this cube. I have an a9, 24-70, 100-400 , 90mm and the 85gm. The Inuit was not deep enough for the 24-70. The 85 front element was too large for the default sized squares. The 100-400 was too big all the way around. Moving the divider did not help. It needs another inch in width and depth.
Works great! Fits both my Sony A7IV with Sigma 24-70, as well as my Dji mavic air 2 and controller. There is also some extra room to fit another 2 smaller lenses or other small things
