I have been a professional photographer for over 40 years, have had probably over a thousand photos published, and have had photos on over 100 magazine covers - not bragging - just verifying that I have lots of experience with long focal length lenses. This Sigma 150-600 is a charm. I use it with a D750, D850, and a little D5600 with wonderful results. Focus is fast enough. Build quality is very good. Image quality is excellent. F8 seems to be the sweet spot. Zoom lock is nice addition. It is easy to fine tune using the Sigma USB Dock UD-01 and update firmware - which is a nice capability. Very happy with this lens.

bought this lens to use for birding and possibly astrophotography (yet to get clear skies for this). its wonderful for wildlife on my A7RIII, i could always use more than 600mm but it does the trick. i dont have a ton of shoots with this lens yet, but the few i have i think i can provide some helpful thoughts on it! decided to purchase this one over the Sony and Tamron after watching the Chris Frost lens shootout on the three.Pros:- image sharpness is really good at 600mm- built in arca-swiss mount on the foot, sony needs to take notes- image stabilization allows for easy handheld shots- soft and hard lens cap included- minimum focus distance at 150mm is actually crazy- autofocus is fast and preciseCons:- the lens is a tad heavy, so for some it may be ... I originally bought this for use with my 5D Mark IV and 7D Mark II. I was a little concerned about this lens when I decided to move to the R5 as there had been some reports of focus pulsing on close subjects when used with an RF mount camera. However, I found Duade Patton on youtube who had some suggested settings for the lens (using the Sigma dock). I followed his instructions and have never had an issue. This lens has been great with my R5. So much so that I really am not in any big hurry to upgrade to the much more expensive CanonRF 100-500. I mean think about it - this lens has 100mm more reach, and is f/6.3 at the long end so works pretty well in low-ish light. It can get a little soft on the long end, but nothing that can't easily be fixed in post. Back off to ... MoreI originally bought this for use with my 5D Mark IV and 7D Mark II. I have used this Sigma 150 -600 for four years and as a working pro I am shocked at how good it is. I have shot wildlife with this lens ( whales, raptors etc ) and although it is certainly not a prime pro lens the results are quite usable. Because of its external zoom it is a bit unwieldy at 500 or 600 as the balance point moves but even handheld the glass and IS are good enough to provide sharp contrasty shots. A decent tripod with a gimbal head will help increase your keepers but the first day out of the box I handheld this for a moon shot on a APS-C camera ( steadied on a fencepost) and got a decent shot. The 5.6/6.3 is slow but for a thousand dollar lens it auto-focuses fairly rapidly with a good number of keepers on a moving subject. For the aspiring wildlife ... For the aspiring wildlife photographer this is a great lens and reasonably affordable. Although not as well constructed as the Sport version I believe the Contemporary IQ in most cases is just as good and a $$ grand cheaper. I have struck this thing again boat gunnels and rock faces without doing any discernible damages except for a few scratches. If you have the budget of course a fast prime 500 or 600 lens by Canon, Nikon, Sony or Fuji is going to be superior but even for avid enthusiasts this lens rocks. Prefer it to the 150 - 600 Tamron. Recommended.
It took me over a year to finally pull the trigger on buying this lens. I had rented it once, and while I had it only for a weekend, I was able to get a couple of shots I really loved, but a lot were not keepers. I knew it was operator error though, so I didn't let it get me too down. I also rented the Sony 200-600 on another weekend to compare, but something just felt better about the Sigma. A couple of weeks ago I ordered the Sigma and right out of the box there was a groaning coming from the lens when I zoomed it--no bueno! I immediately let B&H know and they took care of me instantly. I had a new copy within days and this one is perfect! I haven't taken the lens out into the wild much yet, but I have a backyard full of critters and birds so I've had a lot of ... I haven't taken the lens out into the wild much yet, but I have a backyard full of critters and birds so I've had a lot of practice and fun and man! I love this lens! It's amazingly sharp, quick, and produces fantastic images! Someday I'd love to have one of those fancy 600 f/4 lenses, but for now, this is more than enough and it satisfies my longing to be a somewhat wildlife photog. I love how I can capture the details of eyes on birds and any critters I may come across--even a bumble bee that was bonking its way around one of our bushes recently. You won't be disappointed!
So, there is a lot to like about the lens, foremost is the value it represents. It's sharp and the cheapest way to get into the 600mm length. If you have an EF mount camera, I think you will be more than happy with it. But if you have a mirrorless Canon camera, it will be a very frustrating lens to use for wildlife. The autofocus pulses.. so you will get a majority of out of focus shots when using it. When I review the picture in the viewfinder, it even shows the autofocus box right on the subject... but when zooming in the focus is a few inches behind or in front of the subject. Eye focus and subject tracking is close to useless with the lens with Canon RF cameras... in short- I recommend it for EF mount DSLR's but I do not recommend it adapted to mirrorless. ... (There are many a few YouTube videos out there regarding this problem- it isn't a defective lens or camera) The few shots that I did get in good focus were very sharp indeed, so the lens should be great on Canon DSLR cameras.
I was referred to B&H by Monument Camera, which is located in Tucson Arizona. They are good people, and know their products. Since they did not have the camera lenses that I was interested in, they did the right thing to refer me to B&H. It was easy to order. After receiving the order, I took the lenses with me on a trial run in the local mountains. I took some good sunset photos with the planet Venus, and I plan to use the lens for wildlife photography. The lenses work exactly the way I want them to, and I obtained good quality images. I am glad that I made the correct decision to order those particular lenses AND to order from B&H, instead of those big time operators out there, such as Amazon or Best Buy. Thank you!
I've been wanting to buy some camo for my lens and this fits the bill perfectly, plus it was on sale. I bought some camo spandex material at a local craft store thinking I'd make something myself. Don't even try. This thing is specifically designed for the lens. Can be a little tricky to get the components on, but that's a good thing because it's nice and snug and won't move around once you have everything in place. I may cut the clear windows out to make it easier to adjust switches, but I'll give it a chance first. The Velcro piece is a snap to put on and remove depending on whether you're completed zoomed out or not at all. Now, I just need something for my tripod so I don't scare the local wildlife away while trying to capture images of them.
I now own all three of Sigma's current zoom lens for EF mounts which top out at 600 mm. I bought the Contemporary in the hope that, despite it lack of weather sealing and sophisticated lens coatings, its optics would be good enough for me to choose to carry it in warm dry months hiking, because of its significant weight advantage. I tested my copy of the 150-600 Contemporary against both my 150 to 600 Sports and my 60-600 Sports, and concluded that of the three, the Contemporary came in last. The 150-600 Sports delivered the sharpest and best overall images in every situation within its zoom range. In the range of 150-600 mm the 60-600 mm lens was a close second, requiring about one stop down to achieve similar sharpness. The Contemporary produced good sharp images ... In the range of 150-600 mm the 60-600 mm lens was a close second, requiring about one stop down to achieve similar sharpness. The Contemporary produced good sharp images with adequate front and side lighting, but like the 60-600, required a stop down to achieve comparable sharpness. Unfortunately, the Contemporary produced inferior images in backlit situations and low light ones. To me, it seems unlikely that I will use the contemporary much, since its only advantage (weight) is insufficient for me to want to carry it while hiking when the 60-600 mm will allow me to shoot closer subjects and deliver superior images over all.
I tested 3 lenses before I made this purchase. Nikon 200 to 500 5.6,Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporaryand then the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Sport. TheSigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary was my choice based on sharpness wide open, weight, reach, value B&H pricing, other features, and brand. This lens excels in all areas. Is it perfect? No but what lens, is. I'm shooting with a Nikon 500 and this lens is a perfect match for my style of shooting wildlife. So far the results have been excellent and continuous auto focus on this lens is quick with my D500.
