Smooth AF ideal for video shooting The combination of optical design for video AF and use of the stepping motor enables smooth and quiet autofocus. The lens is also compatible with the Sony E-mount Fast Hybrid AF, achieving precise AF tracking. By using the face recognition or eye AF functions of cameras, focus will continuously be on the face or the eyes even if the subject moves during the shot. High-precision, rugged brass bayonet mount The brass mount combines high precision with rugged construction. Its rugged surface and enhanced strength contribute to the exceptional durability of the lens. Mount with dust- and splash-proof construction The mount features a unique sealing to make the lens an excellent choice in a wide variety of conditions. Impressively compact construction with image quality rivaling SIGMA's Art line. To achieve such a compact construction, lens design is considered based on the strengths of the camera body function to correct peripheral light amount and distortion. In addition, axial color aberration, which is difficult to eliminate by image processing, is corrected by incorporating an SLD glass element. Overall, a compactness and lightweight construction combined with superb image quality is achieved.

This lens is sharp as a knife with great bokeh, not an easy trick for MFT. The unconventional length, I find, makes for interesting angles due the necessity of moving the feet to frame. Excellent portrait lens wide open falls off slightly in the corners but, oh that bokeh. Because of that the fall off isn't noticable in portraits. Stopped down, maybe f4, it's razor sharp across the frame. I can't speak on colors and rendition because I shoot RAW and different cameras directly differently. I've not been disappointed with any OOC images but I've rarely seen an image that couldn't use some post. Buy this lens. You'll find yourself using it and living it more than you'd ever think.

Excellent Image quality...focus can be off sometimes but might be the cameras fault

The images this lens produces are nothing short of spectacular. At f/1.4 the images are sharp and gorgeous. I have noticed a few mis focused (slightly) images of subjects at medium distances in low contrast light BUT for normal portrait style shots, the lens never missed a beat. I also suspect my Olympus em5 mark iii might play into the focus issues a tiny bit so not sure if it is fully the lenses fault. Overall, I am happy with the lens.

I'm not normally one for giving 5 Stars...
10 September 2019

As mentioned, I reserve a 5 star rating for things I find to offer a combination of exceptional quality and value for the price. Usually, very expensive lenses are exceptional, but come with great literal cost while comparatively inexpensive lenses usually compromise pure quality. This Sigma 56mm, at under $500 is quite possibly the highest return on investment in regard to quality for price I've ever seen. I recently did a side by side review between this, the Leica Nocticron and the Olympus 75mm, and this Sigma showed to be not only as sharp or sharper than either of those two wide open, but when all were stopped down to f/1.8 (wide open in the case of the Oly) the Sigma is very noticeably sharper (see attached image). Comparatively speaking, and while not a direct replacement for either of those focal lengths, it sits between the two, occupying a space that can substitute for either (for me at least) while being cheaper, lighter, smaller, sharper and weather sealed. I'm selling my other lenses, that's how good I find this Sigma to be.

Incredible Lens for the Price
15 April 2022

The image quality with this lens is far better than I expected for the price, and easily matches what I get from my Olympus-branded lenses. I was looking for a fast lens with a little more reach than my Olympus 45mm f/1.2, yet lighter than my 45-150 f/2.8. So far, I am not disappointed. My only potential issue is the focus speed, but I've mostly been testing it on my housecats and haven't had a chance to test it with fast moving action (sports in a gym) yet. I've taken thousands of shots with the 2 Olympus lenses I mentioned above and they both focus in a fraction of a second, but this one seems like it sometimes takes TWO fractions of a second (still not too shabby). As I already own the 45-150 f/2.8, I'm not sure if this will fully replace it for my personal ... MoreThe image quality with this lens is far better than I expected for the price, and easily matches what I get from my Olympus-branded lenses. Little Brother To The Bokeh Master 105 f1.4 Art
11 August 2022

I vacillated over jumping into the Olympus 45 f1.2 Pro lens at $1400. I came upon some reviews and just had to give this Sigma a try. I'd read Sigma had essentially come up with this lens formula wise, to emulate their Bokeh Master 105 f1.4 Art for FF but wanted this 56mm for my new OM-1. I just had to give it a try for a mere $404.00. The build quality is superb and solid. The hood is a higher quality then most lenses out there in general. This lens proved to be sharp wide open across the frame, but even better, without any effort can be used in a portrait application to provide some of the sweetest bokeh money can buy. Your subjects face can be in focus but as it leaves their body it just melts away behind them so nicely. This lens can easily compete with lenses ... MoreI vacillated over jumping into the Olympus 45 f1.2 Pro lens at $1400. I came upon some reviews and just had to give this Sigma a try. NO compromises either. Focus is instant and accurate. This on a OM-1 so I can't speak to all other formats nor models. If you have a OM-1 you can save yourself serious $$ going with this instead of a 45 f1.2 Pro lens.

NO FLASH PORTRAITS
15 November 2022

I was looking for a fast lens that would allow me to shoot semi-spontanious portraits of people at our social organization. I was trying to capture images of people expressing true joy. I wanted to avoid using a flash, which usually causes irritation. I started by joking with them and telling them about the person who hated to have their picture taken, and how they took the chance. That they liked the picture and posted it as their Facebook profile image. This has been working so well that people are asking for photo's. Also I tell them that I will not post it anywhere without their permission. The camera is an Olympus OM-D E-M1 MkII, it has a wonderful auto focus, and stabilization. I can shoot short bursts while I am joking around with them, then select later. 56mm gets me in their face without putting the camera in their face. The speed, pleasant bokeh, natural color, and apparent depth of this combination really helps; It seems to enhance the beautiful energy of someone being really happy. This is my first fast Lens, so I can not compare it to anything except that of not having a fast lens. I would have a much harder time being spontaneous with a slower setup. This lens is great! The only thing I don't really like is the tactile inconsistency of focus by wire. But most of the time I am enjoying the best auto--focus I have ever experienced, and seldom even use the manual focus.

Really a fantastic lens
15 July 2022

I purchased this for my MFT system. This is my first Sigma lens. I own a number of more expensive Olympus Pro and Panasonic Leica lenses. The image quality from the Sigma is comparable. Just wish it was weather sealed. Although not the smallest lens it is compact, light and sharp. Wide open you can get some really nice shallow depth of field images. I liked this lens so much that I went and bought a Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC DN too.

So good
15 November 2022

This thing is quite sharp wide open. Sharper than most lenses when they are stopped down. The out of focus areas are nice. For years I used my oly 45/1.8 for portraits, and I loved the results, but this sigma is on another level. I doubt the old 45 will see much use anymore. I wish I'd bought this a long time ago.

Too good to be true
30 December 2018

Like the other fast Sigma primes (16mm, 30mm), this lens is breathtakingly sharp at all apertures. It really does help the m43 sensor compete with ff, and at a reasonable price.I currently own all 3 DCs, and have sold most of my zoom lenses. In fact, I recently sold my 35-100mm/2.8, because I found I was getting better results cropping the 56mm in all but ideal lighting (and how often do we have that). The only thing Ive found even slightly annoying is the focus ring, which, while smooth, is a little too damped for my taste. I do prefer the 16mms action. Just takes some getting used to, and frankly the IQ is just out of this world good, so... its a nitpick at best.56mm is a very narrow FOV, so know what youre getting into. Walk around with your kit lens locked ... MoreLike the other fast Sigma primes (16mm, 30mm), this lens is breathtakingly sharp at all apertures.
