A great lens and a great value.

This lens produces amazingly sharp images once it has been properly calibrated to your camera body, using the Sigma dock and customization software which does not come with the lens. This process is very time consuming and requires a methodical approach to set the lens up for 16 different focal length/distance combinations, but the end result is worth it. In addition to reading the calibration instructions that come with the dock and software, I suggest reading several on-line write ups that will give you good perspectives on how to set up your calibration protocol. The only negative I have come up with so far is the weight of the lens - about 7 pounds, which necessitates a tripod or monopod for truly sharp images at longer focal lengths and reasonable ISO settings. If you use an Arca Swiss tripod head, you will need to buy an adapter for the lens foot that comes with the lens. I should mention that this is my second Sigma 150-600mm Sport Lens. The first one I bought second hand and was not able to calibrate it correctly. I returned the first lens and bought this one new from B&H and I am very happy with it.

The 70-200 just didn't reach enough for my wildlife photographs. It's a great lens, but just cannot reach.I though about getting the 150-600mm, but I have found that for wildlife on the move, it can be hard to find them at 150mm. So, the extra field of view of the 60-600 really appealed to me. So, I with a plan to spend 9 days in the Black Elk wilderness, I made the purchase.First off, like others have said, yes...it is absolutely huge. I have a Canon RP and this thing dwarfs it. Focus can be a bit slow - even when you restrict it - any you have to know when to focus/re-focus on moving targets (like a bird in flight). Beyond that, I have no regrets.

I find the optics incredible, and the weight, compared with super telephoto primes and other telephoto zooms I own, doesn't feel that heavy to me. Unfortunately, the lens foot grooves are not the same dimensions as other Arca Swiss style plates and clamps I own. Hence, I added a Wimberley plate.

Can't get sharp photos on Nikon D600
8 October 2022

I was really excited about this lens after reading reviews and watching videos comparing the Sigma to it's Nikon and Tamron equivalents. This lens did not meet my expectations based on reviews. It did not work for me on the Nikon D600. I could not get sharp images from f4 to f2.8 at shutter speeds ranging from 800 to 1,600 in daylight, early evening light, or under the lights at football stadiums. I am using the lens to specifically shoot sporting events that often end under stadium lights. I always got beautiful crisp, tack sharp shots on my Nikon 300mm f4 prime lens with the D600, but really need a 2.8 for evening/night games. I am hoping to make an exchange for the Tamron, as the Nikon version is such a high price point.

Good combination with the Z9 for birds and wildlife!
16 July 2022

The Short - its a great lens and I do recommend it for use on the Z9 for birds and wildlife. I love shooting variable zoom and this is almost perfect. The Long - I own the Z70-200 f2.8 and it is incredible - sharp, fast and virtually every shot turns out, literally PERFECT! However it is not long enough for the majority of wildlife and bird photo opportunities I encounter around home and I did not want to wait any longer for the new fixed Z lens to ship or the desired Z200-600 to go into production. The Good - In bright light its fantastic, works great with the Z9 focus system and the images are sharp. I am a pixel peeking perfectionist who does not edit and the low light photos are good and getting better. Only owned the lens for a week and am rapidly improving the low light photos since the Z9 higher ISO is incredible. The Bad - Comparing it to the 70-200 and my F mount 300mm f2.8 the Sigma lens is a little softer during golden hour and soft at twilight. I am confident they could easily sharpened in editing to be crystal clear. The focus is as fast as the F mount but slower the the Z mount, but all are really fast in my opinion and stick to the subject the same. The slight dip in performance should not be a shocking revelation for anyone as I'm comparing it to a Nikkor S line f2.8 lens. Also, It is every bit as heavy as advertised. I shoot RAW photos that I couldn't upload so unfortunately the examples are screenshots relay what is I just explained. The Ugly - I already own the Tamron 150-600's. The G1 version has been fantastic for me and my go to lens on the D500 the last five years but does not work with the Z9 autofocus. That being said I would give the Sigma the edge in comparison. The G2 version images have only been ok and not up to my standards on several other camera bodies and did not improve with the Z9.

Great Lens
26 May 2022

This lens is absolutely amazing - I have used it to capture the moon, wildlife, birds in flight, planes during takeoff and landing, as well as various other shots. The focus is great, fantastic clarity, and absolutely amazing detail. Of my various lenses, I would place this one in my top three. It comes with a strap to connect to the lens itself - and - while I'm not typically a use the strap guy myself, I'd highly recommend using the strap. I would not hold the lens by the camera, but rather, the camera by the lens. It comes with a tripod mount as well which is great for stability and crystal clear shots. My only regret to the purchase is not having bought the dock to load custom settings into the lens (it does that!)

Great lens, but f-stop sensitive

Have used this lens for long distance bird photography with the Canon D5 Mk IV and the Canon R5, with adapter. Results at 600mm wide open were spotty, needing strong lighting, and definitely unusable with the Sigma 1.4 extender. However, stopped down to f/8, which I admit is my go-to aperture for most shooting, it produced outstanding results whatever the zoom setting. and even, if to a slightly lesser degree, with the 1.4 extender. My best shots in this 100 yd+ shooting setting are still with the Canon 300 L Mk II + 1.4 extender, but that's at a huge financial penalty, and of course I lose the zoom flexibility so vital for many outdoor and sports challenges. Heavy yes, but at my age (73) I use a monopod for most mobile location shooting anyway. With the Wimberly MH-100 mono-head on a sturdy monopod, easy to carry and lock onto elusive prey.

Great service and ok lens.
9 August 2022

The rental it self was smooth. They even sent packing tape to be used when sealing up the box to send it back. That is first class all the way. The lens itself was the good part. I was a little disappointed in the focus and zoom rings. They were stiff but not like it was broken or damaged that I could tell. Probably more of a design flaw/compromise to get as much performance out of it that the designers could. I didn't read anywhere online about the stiff zoom ring before but I can understand there are trade-offs for such a mega zoom to fit in one package. Either way, it was a good rental outside of the zoom ring issue, which could just be my preference and not an actual flaw but I did come up every time I used the lense.

Review of Sigma 150-600 sport
15 May 2023

I have used Sigma's 150-600mm sports lens f mount Nikon for about two weeks to shoot sports. Let me first say the build quality is impeccable, but with it comes a heavier lens. I don't mind the weight and a monopod really decreases that issue. The zoom ring is a bit tight and requires a 1/2 extra turn to get from 150 to 600. The sigmas focus speed is fairly descent, no where in the park of my Nikon 300 f2.8 but for youth sports it works well enough. Images are soft above 450 and the fstop change of 5-6.3 is a bit disappointing for a 2k plus lens. This is definitely an out door bright daylight lens! I use to own Sigmas 120-300 f2.8 which is stellar. Sigma also makes a prime 500 f4 which runs about 6000k, I wish I had saved a little longer and tried that one out. ... MoreI have used Sigma's 150-600mm sports lens f mount Nikon for about two weeks to shoot sports. To save your self money and weight I would suggest Sigma's Contemporary 150-600mm, it is half the price and can be hand held.

Used for Air Show
26 August 2022

I usually rent the Nikkor 200-400 f/4 for Chicago's Air & Water show, but this year I wanted more reach with a little less cost because I wasn't sure how much time I'd be bale to dedicate to shooting over the weekend of my rental. For an air show, the zoom range was great. If/when the planes got too close I could zoom out from 600mm to frame them nicely. The sharpness was decent. When you're tracking jets flying 300-600+mph a tiny bit of motion blur - even with an extremely fast shutter - can masquerade as softness. The softness in a few photos did give me a good excuse to try Topaz Labs' AI sharpening software a try and I was blown away by it. Long story short, the lens is plenty sharp for Topaz Labs to make the resulting photos pin point tack sharp. But back to ... MoreI usually rent the Nikkor 200-400 f/4 for Chicago's Air & Water show, but this year I wanted more reach with a little less cost because I wasn't sure how much time I'd be bale to dedicate to shooting over the weekend of my rental. And I didn't like that it doesn't have a focus memory button. On the Nikkor I previously used, I could set a focus memory button - I'd set it to infinity - so I could easily find the airplanes farther out to continually track them as they got closer to show center before engaging the AF. With this lens, I found the the AF would hunt for focus - and if I momentarily looked away to focus on something distant it would take me a few seconds to find/lock back onto the plane which caused me to miss some shots - thankfully none of the critical ones! Overall I liked the zoom range and was pleased with the sharpness, but the AF speed and lack of a focus memory button was a con of this lens used in this application.
