I am a Canon shooter who, from recent experience, considers Sigma zooms with EF mounts to be superior to comparable Canon ones and for consistently lower cost. Last Christmas season I sprung for a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 DG OS HSM Sports Lens for Canon EF, even though I already had three other zooms of identical ranges--two by Canon, because of the holiday mark down and my suspicion that this lens would be something special. I find the optics incredible, and the weight, compared with super telephoto primes and other telephoto zooms I own, doesn't feel that heavy to me. Unfortunately, the lens foot grooves are not the same dimensions as other Arca Swiss style plates and clamps I own. Hence, I added a Wimberley plate.

I carry the heavy lens weight with the tripod foot to avoid any strain on the camera lens mount.I shoot events on a Gitzo Reporter tripod with a RRS PC-Pro pan base on a Sirui K40 ball head and Sirui L10 tilt platform on the pan base. This is fast and very flexible. Once the ball is adjusted for Level orientation, the tilt is kept loose to allow for fast vertical changes without losing level.

As others have said, if you intend to shoot this by hand, you better start spending some time in the gym, it's the second heaviest lens I own, behind the beast (Sigma 150-600 Sports) and slightly heavier than the Canon EF 100-400 II. But the lens exudes quality, so I love it. I will be shooting it off a tripod mostly for landscape photography, and the arca-Swiss tripod collar was a nice touch, wish they were equally thoughtful on the beast.Shooting high school basketball, I think it would catch up with you during the game, a monopod might be a nice accessory.Optically, I love Sigma, dating back to 2012 purchasing their contemporary line-up equivalent. That being said, you simply can't go wrong with this lens. The optical gains of RF glass are, from my understanding, best seen at the wide end, thus, a good quality telephoto lens in the EF mount will continue to serve you well. And, this lens has correction factors built in, so you get even better results in Lightroom.5 stars!

I was really excited about this lens after reading reviews and watching videos comparing the Sigma to it's Nikon and Tamron equivalents. This lens did not meet my expectations based on reviews. It did not work for me on the Nikon D600. I could not get sharp images from f4 to f2.8 at shutter speeds ranging from 800 to 1,600 in daylight, early evening light, or under the lights at football stadiums. I am using the lens to specifically shoot sporting events that often end under stadium lights. I always got beautiful crisp, tack sharp shots on my Nikon 300mm f4 prime lens with the D600, but really need a 2.8 for evening/night games. I am hoping to make an exchange for the Tamron, as the Nikon version is such a high price point.
I purchased this lens from B&H primarily for portraits and events. I paired it with a Nikon D850 and took some sunrise photos at the beach as it's first outing. It focuses very quickly, was sharp edge to edge and had beautiful color. It's manual focus ring and zoom ring are smooth but it took a bit to get used to their position which are reversed from most of my lenses. The lens is a little heavier than the native Nikon but it has a rugged, high quality appearance and feel. I am very impressed with both the quality of the lens and the images it produces. I also have the Sigma 14-24 f2.8 art and the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 art lenses which I love and highly recommend, which is why I purchased this lens. They have a great website with more product information than the manufacturer in many cases. They ship quickly and my purchase arrives securely packaged.
Great lens. Arrived on time. Process to order and return is seamless. I got the shoots I wanted in a low light pool with high action. Also tested the lens out indoors with a basketball game. Had beautiful photos. Need to update my camera but the lens was great. Definitely will rent again. So happy to have this option.
Oops, what have I done!?, that was my first thought as I pulled this hulking chunk of metal and glass out of the ridiculously large case that it comes in. Yeah, all the reviews I'd seen commented on how big it is, but dang! Once I started testing it, however, size and weight became irrelevant as I discovered how great this lens is.What I like most about this lens:1) The image quality is great, certainly better than my old Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS (no mark) and right up there with the best lenses I own. I especially appreciate the sharpness at all apertures from the center nearly all the way to the corners. I especially appreciate the sharpness at all apertures from the center nearly all the way to the corners. I also find that the combination of sharpness, high contrast and smooth bokeh (11 blades!) really helps to separate my subject and show detailed textures--some shots look nearly 3D.2) The OS performance is stellar and flexible. Dynamic mode creates a freakishly stable viewfinder image, but my favorite mode is Moderate. You need the dock to unleash this setting, but it's like Canon's mode 3 where IS kicks in at the moment of image capture. I get noticeably better handheld results with this. A quick test indicates about 4 stops of assistance at 200mm whereas I was only getting a bit better than 2 stops in the standard mode.3) The three function buttons on the barrel are great. I have mine set for DoF preview--very handy. Nice that Canon let's you set this in-camera (no dock needed.)4) Customization features are useful and easy to do with the dock. I like the ability to combine focus priority, focus limiters, and OS settings into one custom setting.5) Adapted to an EOS R, it focuses very quickly and precisely. I did make minor tweaks to the focus calibration at the wide end only.6) The hood is a thing of beauty with lock button, soft touch materials, and anti-reflective ribbed interior.OK, a few things I don't like so much:1) Despite the oversized front element (82mm filter thread), there is considerable vignette when wide open. It's even worse than my ancient Canon 70-200L. The good news is that it brightens up nicely with the standard profile in Lightroom.2) The zoom ring is stiffer than it needs to be. While it does impart a very solid feeling, I miss the ability to easily spin the zoom with my finger tips while supporting the lens from below. As stiff as this ring is, you have to kind of grab the lens by the ring and twist it, then move your grip and grab/twist again to complete a full range zoom.3) What about the tripod ring that others have complained about? For me, it's a mixed bag. I actually like that it's not removable. I believe this contributes to how smoothly it operates all the way around without any of the wiggly points some other removable collars have. I have tested it on a monopod, and it's super slick rotating from landscape to portrait. What I don't like is the foot. The Arca-Swiss is nice, but the balance is way off. With a full size body, the balance point is under the collar, not centered under the foot. I wish the Arca-Swiss continued back under the collar (and why doesn't anybody make a replacement foot for this, yet?)It's a keeper.
I bought this lens to be my primary lens as a dog and horse portrait photographer. It sounded like it was going to be similarly sharp and fast as the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 but for $1000 less. When I first got the lens I loved it. But after a few weeks of use, I noticed during a photoshoot that I was missing focus on the eye on the majority of my shots. I went home and calibrated the lens. I had to adjust it by -17 points which is getting close to the maximum adjustments you can make in camera. This made it so the central focus point was accurate. A few weeks after that, the lens stopped focusing at all while photographing my dog. There was a very concerning plunk noise inside the lens and it began to focus again. Since then, it will work accurately 90% of the time ... MoreI bought this lens to be my primary lens as a dog and horse portrait photographer. A few weeks after that, the lens stopped focusing at all while photographing my dog. There was a very concerning plunk noise inside the lens and it began to focus again. Since then, it will work accurately 90% of the time but on nearly every outing there will be at least one moment where the lens will quit trying to focus until I switch AF off and back on or adjust the zoom ring in and out. Today, I noticed that while my calibration made the central focus point accurate, when I set my focus point to either the furthest left or right option, the images are massively back-focused. If I turn off my calibration, the central focus point is soft but the peripheral points are accurate. SO frustrated and the lens will need to be serviced if not replaced. So far Sigma's customer service has been very difficult to work with. Beyond disappointed. If you have the money, spring for the native lens for your body.
So, I was very skeptical of this lens and adapter and whether or not it would work correctly on my Canon RP. I previously had an older Sigma lens and tried to use the adapter with it but, it didn't work. The vignetting was horrible and I would have to manually turn on cropping in the camera settings. That is not the case with this lens and adapter. There's no vignetting and I'm still shooting full frame and not cropped. If you're looking for something that works as well as the Canon version for a fraction of the price, then this is the lens for you!
I had done a ton of research on a 70-200 from numerous manufacturers and I was impressed by what I had heard from the Sigma specific reviews. I thought it couldn't hurt to give it a chance. This wasn't my first time purchasing a Sigma as I've purchased sigma's renowned 18-35 Art series lens in the past which had exterior focus point issues right out of the box and required me to send it back in to get calibrated. With that being said, I wasn't sure what to expect with this lens. After cracking open the box like a kid on Christmas morning, I threw this puppy on my D810 and it was off to the races, firing off test image after test image. I can safely say that this lens blew me further away than I ever expected. I can safely say that this lens blew me further away than I ever expected. Not only is the center point tack sharp (yes, I'm a big pixel peeper), but the exterior points were also very sharp (obviously not as sharp as the center points). I couldn't believe it!! I then went on to test the optical stabilization. I didn't think another feature could blow me away more than the image quality did until I did the OS test and holy crud....I was shooting this thing consistently sharp at 1/15 sec shutter out at 200mm! Once I got down to 1/10 it was game over but seriously....down to 1/15 sec I was consistently nailing focus! Insane! I was so pumped I took this to my maternity shoot and used it exclusively. I was very happy with the results - a few of the images you'll see attached to this post. If you are considering a lens in this focal range, I couldn't recommend this one more! It's heavy, but I'll be honest, I like heft in my lenses (I've always equated it with a quality build - which this definitely is). I can't wait to use this lens for more shoots in the near future!
