I'm serious, DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE! I read all the good reviews here too, but I'm warning you, this machine IS NOT A GOOD MACHINE for ANYONE, especially NOT BEGINNERS.This is an extremely poor excuse for a sewing machine, let alone a "starter" sewing machine. If it's not one problem with the machine, it's another. Problem after problem after problem, and all different! First the timing of the entire machine was off, then the thread kept getting jammed around the bobbin (this problem never stopped), then the reverse lever wasn't working, then the machine got stuck in reverse, then the timing ended up off again (after being fixed already)! These are problems that should not be happening on a sewing machine right out of the box - especially a sewing machine meant for beginners. A beginner sewer should be able to start using this machine (or any machine) right out of the box.I will say that this machine has greatly improved my sewing machine troubleshooting skills.. But I can't keep fixing the machine every time something goes wrong. A one minute, simple sew will turn into an hour project because of all the trouble the machine gives me.You want to know the worst part? I returned this horrible machine and got another one just like it, thinking that surely it was just the one machine. Well that was my mistake, I guess. The second machine is just as bad, if not worse. All the same problems, but in a different order. This is just absolutely ridiculous. I'm seriously looking forward to throwing this machine in the trash with all my strength once I get a different one. I'm never purchasing another Singer sewing machine again. I can't believe how badly this machine functions. If I were more superstitious, I would think this machine were cursed...Seriously. I can't with this machine anymore.

Really disappointed in this machine, it does not work! We bought this yesterday after having some issues with my sewing machine (a 1980s Kenmore passed down by mother and grandmother). The machine is threaded correctly, the bobbin is installed correctly, my husband & both watched the Singer instructional video to make sure the machine is threaded correctly. We can only get it to make about 3 stitches before it jams up! We are stuck with this piece of junk because one the box is opened, Joann's will NOT let you return it. All I need to do is sew a bunch of 2"x2" squares together to make tiny bean bags and this machine can't handle that. I have tried every troubleshooting tip-different thread, different material, oil, cleaning it and it still jams up after a few stitches.

Admittedly, I have used other machines that loaded the bobbin from the top and they are a bit easier. the pieces fell out of my machine when I opened the door just as described by other reviewers. Although I do agree that a video would be helpful for most people. (I am a certified automotive technician and I figure out how things come apart and go to gether for a living.)Anyway, I am no "Susy Homemaker" I am a guy who is tired of paying more to alter my pant legs than I pay for the pants. My first wife taught me how to sew a little bit, and now I live alone with my dog. This is perfect for what I need to accomplish. I am very impressed with what it can do for the price. I believe it will last a long time.

Perfect for this beginner

I have sewn before, but it has been about 20+ years, so I definitely consider myself a beginner. This little machine gave me so much confidence. After watching a few YouTube videos I was on my way. I bought it during covid and have made around 100 masks with it. I got so comfortable with it I’ve made curtains, repaired clothes, took my daughter’s old favorite pair of pajamas and repurposed it into a new gown, and fixed some of the waistbands on her princess dresses. I feel very confident like I can do anything with it. I’ve tested it to its limits with some pretty thick and heavy fabrics, and it has never let me down. I just make sure I have the appropriate size needle for my project- that helps with not jamming. My cousin owns a sewing machine repair shop and she stressed that to me. I’m kind of baffled by the bad reviews because it has never given me any issues.

But that's ok it's an even better machine for what you will buy it for. My daughter is only 12 years old after I taught her how to thread it she loves it. Yes I would buy another one .

The worst machine I’ve ever used
25 November 2023

I am a master seamstress and sewing content creator with millions of views. I have been sewing for well over 30 years and have had my share of machines from the most basic to the most advanced. Last year I expanded to teaching group classes and purchased six of these machines for my students to use and it is a decision I have come to regret. These machines are so fussy and problematic. They never stay threaded and the bobbin jams up CONSTANTLY and for no reason. You can be sewing along just fine and then the machine will seize up and you have to remove the entire bobbin assembly to clear some monstrous jam. The open top thread guide on this machine is a joke as the thread can never stay in it. The speed is not variable and my students often became very discouraged ... MoreI am a master seamstress and sewing content creator with millions of views. There are MUCH better machine options available at this price point. Last month, after a year and a half of frustration with these machines, I replaced them all with the Janome SewFresh machine and I had the most seamless, enjoyable class of the year. Not a single jammed up bobbin the entire class. I was happy to pack these machines up for good. Now they’re sitting in my garage. I won’t even donate them because I know that if this machine had been my first sewing machine, I would have never developed a love for sewing. I definitely DO NOT recommend the Singer Start.

I am a longtime occasional sewer, mostly to repair, hem, etc, although for years I made dresses, costumes for the kids, etc. My 35 year old singer, which I loved, died amd I bought this basic one, thinking I did not need anything fancier at this point in my retired life. A giant mistake. This machine has terrible issues get started, literally growls for 15 seconds before it will actually go, only has one speed- breakneck speed. It will barely go over straight pins without grinding and stopping. The cord for the foot pedal is waaaay too short. I could go on and on. The stitches are ok, fairly straight and smooth, but the logistics of getting It going and the sheer frustration of it cancel out the ok stitching. [Rewarded Review] God awful!

This machine is the absolute WORST you can have. Don't waste your money. It's not even fit for learning on! The bobbin jams incredibly easily and it's an all out WAR to get the bobbin BACK inside the casing! Fond something for more money. Never, EVER go cheap on a sewing machine. Cheaper is NOT better in this case.

[Rewarded Review] Jams repeatedly
20 April 2022

The tension that holds the bobbin in place isn't working right. The machine works briefly and then jams up repeatedly. I had an older Singer sewing machines from 20 years ago and I never had any issues which I bought in 2001. I decided to treat myself to a new machine and it's awful. This one I'm having issues with the bobbin mechanism for some reason. I've tried different tension settings and it jams up every time with the thread getting stuck somewhere. I really don't think it's built well. Since I waited too long to open the box and use the sewing machine, I'm past the 90 days.I have no choice but to donate the product. I called the store where I bought it and the customer service person was very nice, but she said she can't take a sewing machine back that's been opened and also it is past 90 days. She instructed me to contact Singer and ask about warranty information. I did just email them and ask for a refund or credit to purchase a better sewing machine as I'm wondering if a heavy duty machine would be made better. In my previous Singer sewing machine from 20 years ago, the bobbin was easily accessible in a horizontal layout directly under the needle with an easy metal door that slid open and closed. The way this new machine is designed I have to take off a big plastic container that feels cheap and then the bobbin is held vertically in a metal holder. The entire metal holder has to be removed for me to change out the bobbin, and threading it through this metal holder looks like a really poor design. It's not easy to wrap the thread through the metal bobbin holder and then I still need to physically keep it all together while I place the unit back into the sewing machine, and swing the small metal bobbin door open so it will pop back into place. After reading some reviews that a 6 year old can use the machine, I am convinced the machine I bought was either broken and returned to the store without the sales people knowing it was opened, or there is a defect in manufacturing it.
