Bought this because it’s better than a Weber Jumbo Joe. I’ve been a lifelong owner of Weber kettle products, but realize SNS produces vastly superior kettle grills. Heats up quick, holds the temps for a while, and does a great job grilling. I love all the little extras you get with this grill. Such as the smoke and thermometer ports as well as the large thermometer. This thing is also sturdy and easy to move around. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a good grill.

Initial ThoughtsOverall build quality is pretty good. My unit had some defects on the outside of the bottom bowl, but I contacted SnS Grills and they basically said don't worry about it, they would note it in case something happened. The SnS insert that comes with the grill and the optional mini drip pan which I opted to get, do not fit quite as good as their bigger siblings. During my low & slow cook I got a fair amount of liquid dripping into the bottom bowl and into the ash pan. This was because the drip pan is just not big enough to adequately catch all the drips from the indirect cooking area.I have a lot to learn. I should have taken the time to do a test run and learn how the grill runs. Instead I figured I have multiple cookers, I'm good to go. Nope. In ... I should have taken the time to do a test run and learn how the grill runs. Instead I figured I have multiple cookers, I'm good to go. Nope. In my initial hot & fast cook I used too much charcoal. For the low & slow cook, I was chasing the temp all day. It would seem like it settled in, but then the temp would either jump up, or take a big dip, both of which had me going outside to tweak the vent settings. It is very efficient in low & slow mode. In this area it is at least equal to it's big brother, if not better. I ran grill for over 5.5 hours (using Jealous Devil lump charcoal) and still had a little less than half a basket left in the grill after I snuffed it out! I suspect I could have went a solid 8+ hours! There is no water reservoir in the small SnS charcoal basket. SnS recommends using a foil loaf pan filled with water over the coals. I didn't have one so I used a small cast iron skillet filled with water.Things I LikeThe size of the grill is great. At 18" you can get a decent amount of food on this grill and it is still small enough to lug many places. Make no mistake, this grill is not small and it is not light. But that said you can move it around fairly easily. If you are going any distance on foot, I would put it in a wagon.Price. For what you get I think it is a good value. This grill has a lot of great features. Baby Back Maniac has a nice YouTube video comparing the features of the SnS Travel Kettle to his Weber Jumbo Joe. Things like the probe port, smoke hole (temp controller port), heat shield and cool touch vent handles shows thought was put into the design of this grill. The lid bail doubles as lid lock when transporting the grill.Things That Could Be ImprovedThe grill lid does not sit in one position. It shifts from side to side when in the up position and resting in in the lid bail. This may be seen as a benefit as you can shift it from one side to the other as a wind block. I would prefer it sat straight back and then I could turn the grill to defeat the wind if necessary. The long bottom handle that serves to adjust the lower vent and to activate the ash sweep does not lock into place and it is slightly flimsy. I'll likely rig something up to keep it tight. I have not figured out a way to mark the vent positions so I don't have to look at the bottom vent.My grill thermometer is off by 25-30 degrees. This is fairly common for grill thermometers, if you want to travel light and leave your digital thermometer home, you will need to figure out the variance of yours, or replace it with a Tel-Tru thermometer. The size of drip pan as mentioned above, although this is an option, I thought I would still list it.Me. I need to cook more on this grill before coming to a final verdict. In retrospect, I should have done (and will do) a test run as mentioned above. This would have allowed me to try using the smoke hole to regulate the low & slow cook, rather than relying solely on the lower vents. I could have also figured out how much charcoal I need for a hot & fast cook. I should have probably used briquettes rather than lump charcoal.Value: I think this grill is a lot of grill for the money. I was considering the PKTX which is over 2.5 times as much as the SnS Travel Kettle, but I really wanted PK to upgrade the capsule of the TX to the New PK300 capsule because I like the improved features. There is still no word if that will ever happen, although I think at some point it will. So in the end I went with the SnS Travel Kettle. I think I will be happy and feel that it will serve me well.

For the price this grill is awesome. Only thing I would have on my "wish list" is to have a way to keep the lid clamped to the base this way you could carry it around by the handle. Also would be cool if the cover could have some straps to be like a backpack or shoulder strap. I still give the 5 stars because the quality build is great. Also do wish the SNS insert was a bit thicker like my original SNS, but maybe it is not necessary (just the original seems like it will last forever). The ash handle I do wish was better attached because it kind of falls out pretty easily.Positives: very well built base, my WSM base sucks and wants to bend. The smoke port can easily be setup with a controller which is awesome for a portable grill.Port for temp monitoring also is ... I am very impressed with this grill. It’s more expensive then I originally planned to spend on a smaller grill. It’s worth every cent! It does an incredible job cooking indirectly holding an even 250-300 degrees for slow cooking. The design of this grill also lets me cook on much hotter temperatures for searing and grilling steaks and burgers.I also purchased the accessories like the drip pan, charcoal holder and the gloves. All of these items are also high quality and make my grilling experiences easier and cleaner.Over all this grill is amazing and I’m very satisfied. No regrets spending the extra money on a very well designed and built grill.I strongly recommend it!!!
The Travel Kettle is amazing. I wanted the results I get from my bigger kettle in a small package to fit my outdoor lifestyle. I've taken fishing a couple of times and on a hunting trip. I paired it with SnS charcoal basket bundle and with the SnS drip pan. I've cooked burgers, fajitas, beer brats, reverse seared stakes, chicken wings and have also done some longer smokes on it on some dino ribs. This travel kettle is amazing. If you want results that you get in your backyard from you 22 SnS or Weber kettle on the road then is the kettle you need. A buddy owns the Weber Jumbo Joe and it blows it away. He is retiring it and ordering the SnS Travel Kettle. One of the best purchases I've made.
I have owed a Weber kettle for almost 13 years and it was good for most of that time, it eventually failed do to the shortcuts Weber chose in their manufacturing process. The welds on sockets for the legs failed, the grates were always cheap and rusting and it did have the details. SnS took the kettle concept and corrected all these shortcomings. The quality and eye toward detail and craftsmanship set this grill head and shoulders about its competition. I could be more happy with my new travel kettle. Built in America and meant to last. I don't care that it cost twice the price of the Weber Smok'n Joe. I enjoy it everytime I cook. Awesome product.
The unit seems sturdy! I’m used to three vent holes of a Weber for airflow so I had NO IDEA how hot and how fast this guy can operate. All that ventilation is great! However, you’ll probably need to relearn the positioning to save your charcoal if you aren’t using the basket because it will eat the charcoal left fully open.I do sincerely wish there was a marking system for the bottom vent opening for this reason.Other than that, no complaints, just quickly emptied plates…I like it!
I have a pretty wide collection of kettle grills from another manufacturer, very often supplemented with accessories from SNS Grills. The fact that the accessories work so well has left me wondering what "the real" thing must be like, especially after I purchased my "proper" bullet shaped smoker from a guy who was selling it because he had bought the SNS Grills kettle grill. So when the Travel grill arrived, I was just looking for an excuse to get an 18" grill the fill the gap between my 22" and 14" grills. Well, holy smokes!! Does this thing rock! I cooked on it yesterday and it came up to temp beautifully and then locked in at 250 better then any gas grill I have used. I cooked on it yesterday and it came up to temp beautifully and then locked in at 250 better then any gas grill I have used. The build quality is excellent, the thermometer on point, the ash cleaning system is awesome and it cleaned up remarkably easy due to the amazing porcelain coating. Is it a tad more expensive then the other guys.....sure.......but it's worth EVERY CHEATING PENNY! At 18" it's a perfect size for a quick grill for the family without feeling like I am overusing coals to fill up my 22". I am really impressed. Congrats an an excellent product! My only complaint, and it's minor, is that my drip pan in my 22" fits almost edge to edge between the grill and my SnS Original. However, the mini drip pan I purchased for the Travel Kettle has quite a bit of room around the edges. Is this a show stopper? **** no, it's just one thing I noticed, and certainly not a reason not to purchase.
The grill is well built with nice features. I really like how it’s shaped more like a bucket than a bowl. Gives the cooking surface more evenly distributed heat. The sns basket works nicely, I’ve done both hot and fast and low and slow cooks. Very easy to regulate the temperature if you already know what to do from cooking with other kettles. I gave it one less star because I’m pretty disappointed that they did away with the grey color and went black. I also got the SNS original kettle and was expecting grey. They look better with the grey and the black shows all the dirt and pollen spots. Not sure why they would change or not offer the option? It’s one of the features that made SNS stand apart from first glance!
