Here is a 5 year review, I wear these socks consistently 120+ days a year as a wildland firefighter in my Lowa Tibet LL boots and another 30+ days during hunting season in my Kenetrek Mountain Guides and I wear them in my casual shoes during the winter time. I do not wear any other socks with these smartwool trekking socks they are fairly thick. If you have a tight boot/shoe currently with a normal sock these may make them unwearable. I love these socks so much I waited to buy a new pair of boots to make sure everything fit perfectly. When working remotely, my rotation is usually about 3 days on average and they would go more if I needed to go longer, I wish I would have found these socks 20 years ago. I finally had to let go of an original pair I purchased 5 years ... MoreHere is a 5 year review, I wear these socks consistently 120+ days a year as a wildland firefighter in my Lowa Tibet LL boots and another 30+ days during hunting season in my Kenetrek Mountain Guides and I wear them in my casual shoes during the winter time. I finally had to let go of an original pair I purchased 5 years ago which prompted purchasing more and this review. The original pair were finally getting thread bare near the ball of my foot but maintaining shape and thickness everywhere else. Why do I like them, cushion comfort, sizing, what do I love about them longevity, smell abatement and ability to keep elasticity in the right spots for years. The new socks I received, don't have as much as the fancy stitching which helps you match them up when you own a whole bunch of them and tells you their size. But then again, I didn't buy them for the fancy stitching.

Been buying Smartwool socks for years and as usual these did not disappoint. Very comfortable when you are on your feet all day and they last a long time. I wash them inside out to prevent pilling but otherwise just wash and dry in the dryer on high with my other laundry. A bit more expensive than other brands, but at 70%, these have way more merino wool content than most, and it make a huge difference. Will definitely buy more when needed.

BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL VERSION:Disappointed in quality relative to the originals, which I have had for years. Unlike the originals, the socks don't stay up. They seem to have less wool and/or weaker nylon or elastic than the original. Here is the current composition: Knit in USA of Imported Yarn: 56% Merino Wool, 11% Nylon, 31% Recycled Nylon, 2% Elastane. If this is different than the original, that may explain the issue I am having. I will not be buying these again unless this problem is addressed.

I received my pair of socks through the Smartwool insider program and I have been extremely pleased with them! They are extremely comfortable to wear, and I found the extra cushion welcome during my 8 hour retail shift. I would say they fit true to size, I usually wear a size 8 shoe and the medium fits well. These socks do stretch out, by the second day i found they were fitting looser than before. they do affect the fit of your footwear and if recommend trying on boots with these socks as they definitely affect the fit of your footwear. I used these socks mainly in my daily life and I plan to use them during the winter in my boots to keep my feet toasty warm. Dispute their warmth my feet never felt sweaty or damp, the socks kept moisture away from my feet.Overall ... MoreI received my pair of socks through the Smartwool insider program and I have been extremely pleased with them! I have recently been hiking a fair amount and I am one who waits before buying items so I don't end up with all the gear and no idea. I was holding off from buying hiking socks to ensure I bought the right hiking sock but I came to a crossroad that I needed to buy something to give me more comfort in my hiking boots and I turned to these extra cushion hiking socks as my first test and they have been a success. I have found that the warmth is good, the length is also a good height so that I goes past the height of my boots, when water gets into my boots I have found that the socks don't immediately absorb the water as was the case for me before with ordinary socks, the breathability seems to be decent as my feet aren't that clammy after a long hike, and I generally ... MoreI have recently been hiking a fair amount and I am one who waits before buying items so I don't end up with all the gear and no idea. I can't speak to the longevity as I haven't had them for long enough to make a fair comment. I don't particularly like the branding text size as I tend to like more subtle branding on my clothing items. I have found that I have also been wearing them generally around the house as they are comfy and I think I might pick up other pairs.
#sweepstakesI wear hiking boots nearly every day as we live in a rural area where the ground is rocky. I have worn various thicknesses of Smartwool hikers for about twenty years, and have tried other brands along the way. Smartwool socks seem to hold up a LOT longer than most other brands I have tried for overall everyday wear, and especially in resisting holes in the toe section of the sock. I recently purchased these "extra cushion" socks for winter wear around the house and the extra protection for trail hiking/backpacking. I love the durability and performance that Smartwool socks provide, and with all the benefits of wool without the scratch. And, you just toss them in the washer and dryer with everything else! Perfect.
I've been buying and wearing Smartwool socks for over 20 years. Their "Classic Hike Extra Cushion" socks are absolutely my favorite. Super warm, super thick, non-itchy and SO comfortable in the winter, out walking the dog in the cold rain/snow or just padding around the house on cold floors. Caveat: I don't use them for hiking. Thorlos are my hiking socks since I get sweaty feet and, to be honest, these are so thick they would make my hiking boots too tight.
I have usually purchased 6-7 pairs of the old Trekking style socks every year to train for and participate in a 72 mile veterans fundraiser hike in the Laurel Highlands. Recently, they were no longer available at stores. When I inquired about a replacement type, I was informed that therre wasn't a replacement. Now 6 months later, I find the Hike Extra Cushion 'Classic' version in stores which is purported to be the same as the old Trekking. They are not the same. First, the Trekking ones were thicker and lost their padding after a long period of time. These new ones are less padded and lose their padding quicker. Second, the Trekking ones stayed put where these new Hike ones are more slippery and allow the foot to slide around in the boot and bunch up. Second, the Trekking ones stayed put where these new Hike ones are more slippery and allow the foot to slide around in the boot and bunch up. Third, the Trekking were always a consistent wool content. The new Hike version is not, at least from what is advertised or listed on the tags. The latest pair of Hike I bought lists 71% wool and 28% nylon(virgin and recycled combined). The Smartwool website lists them as having 56% wool and a whopping 42% nylon combined. There seems to be inconsistent changes being made in the production of this replacement. Finally, the website lists the Hike version as having the knitted in arch support I am accustomed to in the old Trekking version. Yet the latest pair of Hike I bought does not have this arch support. Again, this is inconsistency. I will now need to slowly evaluate other brands such as Darn Tough. I believe these decisions are being made (use of nylon and recycled nylon) for perception reasons and not for the ongoing quality of the product. Product quality should not suffer due to the inclusion of recycled content or else the carbon footprint is incresed, not decreased.
I was hesitant to buy from Smartwool after I found out the wool percentage has gone down about 7% since I bought my last pair about four years ago. I know their merino wool is what makes the socks so unique and high quality. The comfort and warmth is unmatched! I decided to give them another chance anyway after buying a pair by a different brand (which turned out to be horrible). Lo, and behold, I was surprised there wasn't a big difference in comfort, warmth, or quality! I suppose time will tell how long they last as I've only had them a week or so. The best thing about Smartwool is they fit so well without being loose. I've tried other brands and they are so tight they're uncomfortable. Other brands I've tried are so harsh and scratchy they are not the same as Smartwool! I would give 5 stars if they hadn't changed the wool content which I preferred what it was previously.#sweepstakes
I bought these for winter hiking and I'm disappointed that they gave me blisters on my big toes because they're too big. I tried washing them in hot water and heat drying them to try and shrink them but no luck. I guess that's a good thing if you buy the right size. I've purchased Mediums before with no problem, as your sizing chart suggests for my size 7 foot. If there is a next time I will buy size small I guess. You need to get your sizing and/or your quality control right. Just saying.
