But if you crank the volume and attempt a multi hour, high volume party, the AMP will likely to heat up, go into thermal protection mode and shut off ...assuming the output circuits don't short out and become permanently damaged.

Great replacement for an ageing system.

It's a worthwhile investment
2 February 2023

I started investing in Sonos about 3 years ago, and let's be honest, it is an investment. Originally, we heard rumors of a mass shift from S1 that rendered all Sonos investors before me product useless, scared me a bit. To this day, I still pray Sonos does not sunset my versions placing me in a stuck stance for expanding my product suite, because this brand is worth it. With respect the the amp, I have 5 running my home, and absolutely love it. I did not purchase the in-wall speakers but they power my Martin Logan speakers amazingly. Since that initial blow to the pockets, I've expanded to having 5 Play 1's, 4 Play 3s, 2 Roams, 2 Moves, 4 Play 5s, Arc, Beam and 5 Subs across my house and cabin, so needless to say...I'm all in. The systems are near interchangeable, allowing me to take products between homes and through quick change over in network, they are up and rockin'. The surround sound from the Arc and Play 1s....and the Beam for that matter, are amazing, great surround displacement. I've invested over 20k in my media room surround (I know, not much to some) but will the distinction Sonos produced with a 3:1 surround can actually sound better. Now, when it comes to gut crunching, mind bending movies and shows...they are ok. Still a good experience but don't hold up at super high volumes. The Play 1s in either surround or in stereo are my favorite of the Speakers, they are cost effective comparatively, and give a great whole sounds with minimal footprint. I could go on and on about how much I enjoy all aspects of Sonos products and their insanely good reliability, but for anyone reading this, if you are on the fence, the investment is worth it...whatever you are buying now, won't be your last

Not great for tv/movie use, dialogue is lost
18 June 2023

If using for TV or movies, get an AV receiver instead at this price point, the dialogue will be clearer and better heard at lower volumes. I will preface by saying I'm well versed at audio equipment and an enthusiast in this segment. I bought this amp to attempt to replace a dying old Cambridge Audio receiver and my intention was to use it for music listening through Spotify and for TV/movie use. While music sounded good (Bowers and Wilkins 707 S2 speakers), watching TV was difficult at lower volumes, the dialogue was lost. Given that this amp has an HDMI input, it's use is marketed for tv/music/movies but it falls quite short in the audio fidelity quality to be $600 when compared to an AV receiver that also has music streaming capabilities, among many other things ... MoreIf using for TV or movies, get an AV receiver instead at this price point, the dialogue will be clearer and better heard at lower volumes. I attribute this to the Class D amplifier the Sonos amp uses, while many AV receivers use the superior (though less efficient) Class AB, which excels in audio definition and fidelity over Class D. This was starkly apparent to me. Even with budget speakers you WILL experience the same.

Sonos Just Get It.

Sonos is the Mac of audio systems. Love it or hate it, it simply works. I’m an admitted snob when it comes to audio. Years ago I might have called myself a true audiophile and admittedly had way too much money invested in boutique equipment. These days life moves too fast and it’s nice just just hit play and receive instant audio gratification. I drive a pair of vintage Bose 8.2 (all you Bose haters can stop before you even start…we’re not not talking Acoustic-Junk. If you’ve never heard the older Bose speakers you’re completely unqualified to comment) floor standing speakers with this amp along with an SVS Pro 12” sealed sub and it’s amazing. Streaming music and TV sound made easy
8 January 2023

The SONOS Amp will provide me sound for outdoor music and an outdoor TV under new screened porch. I will be switching to ethernet cable to SONOS Amp since wifi is cutting out occassionally thus losing SONOS Amp remote control interface with SONOS App but surprisingly music continues. Ultimately I will have 6 pairs of wired passive outdoor speakers surrounding pool, firepit, and under the porch. Rather than purchasing separate SONOS Amps for each pair of wired speakers. I will connect the speakers through a Niles SSVC-6 6 pair speaker selector with separete on/off and volume control for each pair. Currently I am testing with 2 speaker pairs and sound quality is great. I don't play loud music. I will connect the speakers through a Niles SSVC-6 6 pair speaker selector with separete on/off and volume control for each pair. Currently I am testing with 2 speaker pairs and sound quality is great. I don't play loud music. I like the volume at about 3/4 full on Niles speaker selector and SONOS at about 80% for listening to 1 speaker pair under 26'x 16' outdoor screened porch. When I added a second pair of speakers through Niles selector I did not detect sound level dropping off of 1st pair. When I add other speakers I will set the volume control on the selector switch at desirable levels for each separate zone. After that I can turn off any zone from the selector switch without changing volume setting for that zone. Thereafter volume will be controlled by the SONOS Amp for all zones simultaneously with tweaking volume for each zone by the NIles selector switch or turning them on and off by the selector switch convenienlty located and protected from the elements under the screened porch in a cabinet. The SONOS Amp works well with multiple music streaming services like Amazon Music and Spotify. The Iphone SONOS app serves as the remote control. Music is streamed over wifi or ethernet directly from router to the SONOS Amp. Music is not streamed from phone so you can take phone calls with sound through phone while music still plays through SONOS Amp. Another reason I purchased the SONOS Amp is so that TV sound would be immediatly played through external speakers through the SONOS Amp when the TV is turned on. This is possible because the SONOS Amp has an HDMI ARC connection to the TVs HDMI ARC port. I can also choose to play music on the SONOS Amp to the external speakers and let the TV play sound through its own speaker. By using the Niles speaker selector switch, I can listen to the TV sound or music in all the speaker zones or choose which ones with the selector switch on/off buttons. However, I can't play the TV through one zone and music through others with the selector switch. I would have to use the TV speakers for the sound on the porch while listenting to music around the pool throught the SONOS Amp. If I wanted to play TV sound through my external porch speakers while playing music through my pool speakers, I would need to purchase a second SONOS Amp connected to the porch external speakers directly without going through the Niles Speaker Selector box. I don't know however, if when I played music through the two SONOS Amps whether there would be sound delay for the sound going to the pool speakers through the Niles Speaker Selector and sound going to the porch speakers directly from the 2nd SONOS Amp. However, at this time I have no desire to do this so connecting one SONOS Amp to the Niles Selector Switch which will be connected to my 6 pair of external speakers surrounding the pool, fire pit and screen porch meets my needs and easy to control. Also by not spending extra money on multiple SONOS Amps I am putting money into high quality outdoor speakers. I just purchased a pair of Paradigm 470 outdoor speakers with 7 1/2 inch woofers for the TV surround sound under my porch. The SONOS Amp provides a very good simulated center channel when playing these two speakers through my Niles Selector Switch. I also have an existing pair of Klipsch 650 rock speakers with excellent sound that replaced a pair of Bose Freespace 51 speakers that were also excellent but didn't survived the cold and rainy weather over many years and lost their base and clarity of sound. l will continue using an old pair of infiniti outrigger speakers over a section of outdoor decking which sound good but don't match the richness and base of the high end Klipsch 650 rock speakers or Paradigm 470. I have not had a chance yet to reroute the wiring to the SONUS Amp to compare the Klipsch 650 rock speakers to the to the Paradigm 470 speakers. I have yet to decide on the speakers for the other zones. The SONUS amp also has a connection for an external subwoofer. I don't think I need it but I will test it with a subwoofer I use indoors to see whether to also purchase an outdoor subwoofer.

Very simple way to set up an A/V system
19 July 2022

One of the most difficult challenges for Audio Video is to integrate high-end 2 channel audio and 5.1 movies with one system. A/V receivers are one way but they won't generally handle low impedance speakers very well. Many spouses will complain how complex it is to have multiple remote controls and lots of wires. I replaced a Yamaha receiver with the Sonos Amp. I used a FireCube as my media source. I connected the ARC HDMI from my projector to the Sonos Amp. I programmed the FireCube remote to control the TV, Sonos volume, and control the media selection. I was able to get everything to work with one remote control. A/V receivers are one way but they won't generally handle low impedance speakers very well. Many spouses will complain how complex it is to have multiple remote controls and lots of wires. I programmed the FireCube remote to control the TV, Sonos volume, and control the media selection. I was able to get everything to work with one remote control. I connected the Sonos amplifier to a pair of vintage EPI 20+ speakers. These are 4 ohms each. I added a pair of Sonos speakers to the rear and used my existing subwoofer with the system. Everything worked as expected. I didn't use the phantom center channel option as the sound was always clear and easy to understand. My Sonos App showed that when I played 2 channel music, only the front speakers were engaged. When I played anything that was 5.1 channel, I got a notice on the App that I was playing in 5.1 and I could easily hear the rear channels playing. I had a pair of Sonos 1s but I swapped them out for Ikea speakers. The reason I did this was that I could get some very cool stands with the Ikea speakers that gave me better placement for the rear channel. The Sonos amplifier has lots of power. Combined with the vintage EPI speakers, the sound is very powerful. The system is as easy to use as possible. The amplifier takes up almost now space and I have eliminated lots of wires. I have a Dolby Atmos system in another room but I have yet to see a great advantage in my environment. The sound from the Sonos amplifier will leave almost any A/V receiver in the dust.

Who is this for?

I wanted to give this a try. This is a strange product as it's not good for either side if you are looking for a budget friendly option or if you have tons of money. If you're trying to save money and play high quality music, get a used previous gen amp in a better tier and they will have so many more features and their amps will be better quality. This, the bluesound edge and bose's amp are music first and are literally just for simplicity. But if money is tight and you want to save, they all are expensive for what limited features they have, no e-arc, no screen, contentious relationship with tidal, or even wifi 6 (perhaps not needed, but probably costs them $2-3 dollars extra). The only plus is their dedicated apps but better receivers have had streaming features for years without needing to download a basic app that lets you have a basic eq of Treble and Bass. It's literally software and they went with a 2 band eq for a product for "audiophiles."If you have lots of money and expensive speakers and are that meticulous about sound quality enough to get into audiophile speakers, you should probably get a better amp. Why spend thousands on speakers and $700 on a basic amp? If you just want music and basic connectivity and you don't care that much about sound quality and features, why bother with hifi in the first place? This would be like putting a camry engine in a la ferrari. It'll work, but why? If you have money, why waste time and money on expensive equipment to have it run by this? Please buy something else.

Works so well

This works great when connected to my Martin Logan bookshelf speakers and matching subwoofer. It works so well with my Spotify account. I love how it is built into the app because so many devices require you to use Spotify connect which is cumbersome and flaky at times. Sonos has a real winner here. Btw, my Martin Logan speakers are 4 ohms and, according to the Sonos website, they are getting 250 watts each which is good because that is the maximum amount of power recommended by Martin Logan. Overall sounds great. There's only one thing that I don't like. I wish that Sonos would give me, an end user, the option to remove Sonos Radio from the list of inputs and utilized streaming services. I've tried Sonos Radio HD for 7.99 a month and it gets repetitive quickly so I decided to cancel it. Since I paid 700 dollars for this amp and because Sonos products are expensive in general, I should be given the option to remove Sonos Radio and just use what I subscribe to. This is nothing but slick Sonos marketing and I don't like it. Just a side note.
