Just my 2 cents on that matter.

I rented this lens (and an A74 body) before purchasing both. I have used it for almost one year. It is amazingly sharp, well built, and has a smooth internal zoom with a short throw from 200 to 600. Since I also use (and love) Nikon D850, I recently got the Nikon AF-S 200-500 as a potential replacement (to get to a one camera setup). I had to send it back after testing both because the Sony was sharper in every situation both at large and small apertures. The only downside to this lens is that it does not have a larger aperture like f4, but of course that would make it ridiculously heavy and expensive. If you want a tack sharp lens with a smooth feel at a reasonable price, you can't go wrong with this one. I also bought the 1.4x teleconverter which seems to work ... I ended up sticking with the 100-400, but really only because I ultimately valued the 100-200 focal length more than the 400-600 range and because the 100-400 is lighter and more compact (and fits better in my bag with my other gear).But man -- the 200-600 is a beautiful lens that delivers! I didn't see any drop-off in performance across the focal range, the action on it is excellent, and it has all the features one would need. It is a hair slower than the 100-400, but that's hardly an issue. The autofocus performance is stellar. I like to really compress subjects and objects from a distance and the lens allows me to use very minimal post-cropping if any at all.It is somewhat heavy but I've found a few pretty comfortable positions to hold it free-handed for long periods of time, but I do use it on a tripod occasionally. Oddly enough I find the 70-200 GM to be more awkward to hold even though it weighs less and is smaller.If you're into street photography it will draw a lot of attention, none of which has been negative so far. All make exceptional glass for their camera's.I am going on record stating that the Sony 200-600 is probably the sharpest tele-zooms I have ever used.The entire zoom range is accomplished with just a 1/4 turn of the zoom ring.The lens is sharp throughout it's zoom range from 200-600 mm.Combined with the a9, a9II, a1, or A7rIV or V, this lens focuses fast and accurately.I never recommend a teleconverter as I believe the focusing speed is comprised as I shoot mostly birds in flight. This lens also does well on sitting birds.Yes, the lens is not light, but I place my left hand just behind the lens hood and this helps balance the lens ... If I walk long distances or I use my bicycle I put this unit on a cotton carrier which works well for me.I am 74 and have little difficulty walking around with this lens.If your thinking about this lens I strongly suggest you try both the 100-400 and 200-600 before you buy and see which is best suited for you.Again, I am strongly promoting this lens as an all in one wildlife lens.I also own the Sony 600 f4, and in my professional opinion at closer ranges I have trouble telling which lens I have used especially after a visit to photoshop.Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.
I bought this lens for landscape shots that needed a longer reach I've spent the weekend testing it both indoors with flash and outdoors at all types of settings. I've concluded that it's sharp, focuses super quick on my Sony A7RII, has nice contrast and handled shooting directly into the sun extremely well.It's built like a tank and kind of heavy for this 64 year old shooter. Frankly not something I want to lug around and hand hold. For me that's not an issue because I bought this with the intention of tripod mounting it out in the field. It's virtually impossible for me to hold it without camera shake due to it's size and weight. Depth of field is very shallow at 8' away so you may have to kick up your aperture setting to 11, 16 or 22 depending on what your doing (or focus stack).When it's mounted to my Sony It's about 1/2" too long to fit in my camera back pack. So I have to remove it. I put my Sony 24-105 F4 back on the camera body and situate that in the center of the pack. This allows me to just barely squeeze my SEL 200-600 into the left side of the back pack. This still leaves me room for my full size flash and one smaller sized lens. I use a Lowepro Whistler BP 350 AWII.You barely have to turn the ring to go from 200-600 mm. I've never seen a lens with so little travel and such a big jump in length. This is very convenient. Speaking of convenience there is no external lens barrel that telescopes out when you go to 600. It's all done internally. The weight remains balanced through the range. What another unusual and very nice feature.The foot plate that comes with it didn't mount onto my ARCA SWISS type plates so be careful with that. I purchased a Kirk Enterprises LP 68 arca swiss foot. The old one pops right off and the new one pops right on (of course they lock in place). This foot piece is tight and also built like a tank, no wobble with it at all.So at $2,000.00 you're getting your moneys worth and then some. This lens will easily out live me and provide me with a remaining lifetime of joy. Sony has delivered on the promise.
I looked at the other zoom lenses in this range, but in the end I chose the Sony 200-600 mainly because of internal zooming. I also purchased an RRS Arca-Swiss compatible replacement foot. What can I say? This lens is the standard to which others are compared for a reason - great image quality! When you are shooting birds or wildlife at a distance, that's what really matters when you must crop. I already had the Sony 1.4x teleconverter - another reason to choose the Sony lens for the Sony system. With this lens and teleconverter I have excellent image quality up to 840mm - 1260mm equivalent if I use APS-C mode. That's a lot if versatility with excellent results. I definitely think the higher price is worth it considering those results.
