Capture sports, wildlife, and distant action with the vast zoom range of the 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G SSM II Lens from Sony. The full-frame lens offers excellent reach an uses a variable f/4-5.6 aperture to keep size to a minimum without sacrificing quality. It also uses two extra-low dispersion elements to combat aberrations and has a Nano AR coating to reduce flare and increase contrast. Along with this, the G series lens delivers outstanding bokeh, helped in part by the nine-blade circular diaphragm. Optimized for speed, the 70-400mm is equipped with a Super Sonic wave AF Motor with an updated LSI drive circuit for four times faster tracking performance. Also, the lens has tactile controls for intuitive operation in the form of three focus hold buttons and an electronic focus range limiter switch. Additionally, it has a dust- and moisture-resistant construction and comes with a removable rotating tripod collar.

A Pleasant Surprise

This lens has surprised me. A prior reviewer said it exceeded expectations. The same has been true for me on a Sony a77MII. I am getting nice, bright, sharp actions shots (sports primarily) even at full telephoto. I condider this lens essential for baseball or fastpitch because of the bad shooting locations you usually have to deal with. I also use it a great deal for soccer. I had not expected the level of sharpness that I am getting. Be advised that this is not a fast lens, so if you are shooting in less than brightly lit conditions you are going to have to make some iso and/or speed compromises, but Sony brand fast lens with this amount of reach are extremely pricey (and those do not zoom!) This is heavy lens for handheld, and at 400mm (550mm on an APS-C camera) you will need all the steadiness you can get. Finally, know that this lens is not compatible with Sony teleconverters.

Another Great Sony Lens

I really like the white finish on the new lens. When I read that it would focus faster and more accurately than the original lens, I could hardly wait for it to become available. My first pictures with the new lens were of a micro focus chart. I was very disappointed when I discovered that the image was soft at f/5.6. At f/8, the image was very sharp and there was no difference between the new and old lenses. I used the new lens for one week shooting pictures of whitetail deer, several backyard birds and more than 1000 pictures of hummingbirds. The focus was quick and accurate with no hunting. The image at f/8 was a little clearer and more vibrant than with the old lens. After discussing the soft focus issue at f/5.6 with the retailer and a Sony technician, I returned the lens and exchanged it for a different but identical lens. I am much better pleased with the replacement lens. It produces tack sharp images at any focal length at f/8 and the image is only slightly softer at f/5.6. The focus is measurably quicker than the old lens. Focus seems to be snappier in the field. It is quick and locks on very accurately. I am convinced it will be much less frustrating next year during spring migration. I would definitely recommend this lens to a friend.

Best telephoto zoom lens on the market for Sony.

Definitely the best zoom lens currently on the market for Sony. The build quality is excellent. The focusing is very quick and much faster than its predecessor. The focusing is also silent due to the SSM motor. Thee focus and zoom rings is very smooth to operate. All the photos I have taken so far with the lens has been tack sharp. The IQ of photos taken on the lens is not far off from prime lenses if not identical. The lens will complement any Sony camera and works particularly well with hybrid focusing system of the new Sony Alpha 99II.The photo of the squirrel was at 80% quality and heavily cropped.

Exceeds Expectations
7 December 2014

Bought this lens to replace an 80-200 f2.8 and 300mm f2.8 from my film days and to complement my Sony SAL 16-50 so that with these two lenses I can travel much lighter than previously. I wanted the extra reach of the 400mm end and the tripod collar so did not opt for the lighter 70-300. I received the lens a few days before a winter trip to Colorado and hoped I would be able to get familiar with it quickly. I do shoot the occasional bird or wildlife image but I use the lens primarily for landscape work and extracting compositions from larger scenics. I also plan to use it to shoot butterflies and dragonflies in our garden. It is used on A77 and A700 bodies.I'm very impressed with the build quality and fit and finish of the lens. I also plan to use it to shoot butterflies and dragonflies in our garden. It is used on A77 and A700 bodies.I'm very impressed with the build quality and fit and finish of the lens. My trip included stops at Great Sand Dunes, Black Canyon of the Gunnison and Rocky Mountain national parks. The temperature was consistently below freezing at all three places and well below zero in the mountains at sunrise above 11,000 feet. Despite the lack of weather sealing I had no issues with the blowing sand of the dunes or the blowing and falling snow in the mountains. The tripod collar allows quick transitions from portrait to landscape orientation and because I do use a polarizer for most of my outdoor work I found the window in the hood allowing access to the filter rim to be extremely useful. The hood itself is light and I might question its long term durability but it fits securely and clicks in place assertively. This lens and my 16-50 are the first lenses I've had with the SSM focusing motor/system and I'm blown away by its speed and silent operation. I'm very much looking forward to using it on butterflies in the spring. This is a heavy lens but no more than I expected and still considerably lighter than my 300. My only mild complaint is the lack of a zoom lock like the one on the 16-50. I often carry the tripod mounted rig over my shoulder and with the lens pointed down it will zoom all the way out. Because of that I would rate it 4.95 instead of a perfect 5 stars but do highly recommend this lens. Will review its butterfly performance once the opportunity presents itself.

This was my first time ever renting a lense. They were so helpful in suggesting what i would need and so accomodating gettinge the lense on such short notice. They were also so nice, patient, and understanding when i messed up returning the lense and didn't charge me for it being late. The link they sent on where to drop off lense locally didn't work for some reason so i looked up fed ex drop off locations near me and used a drop box. It took over a week to get back to them. 😥

Fantastic lens
13 October 2021

I purchased this lens to use on my Sony alpha A77 & A57 cameras and I am so pleased I did. The images I have taken are so crisp and sharp, the autofocus is so quick and more to the point silent, a great plus point when photographing wild life. Another great feature is the zoom range and the images are so good right through the zoom range. As my cameras have cropped sensors this give the equivalent of 105 to 600 mm lens. The only down side is I now need to save up for a body with a full frame sensor

Good quality used lens for a good price

I love the sharpness of the lens. When zoomed out, the barrel wiggles back and forth a very little bit. An earlier version of this lens I had did not wiggle. I hope something inside is not going to fall apart. The slide switch on the side of the lens, to select between manual and autofocus is very stiff, difficult to push. But, these are pretty minor complaints. I am getting good pictures and having a lot of fun with the lens!

I have onlyhad this lens for a couple of days so I decided to try it out on an earlycloudy morning, it surprised me how fast this Lens would auto focus inreally low light even with the lens hood and a CircularPolarizer Filters on it! I have one of the older Sony 70-400 mm f/4-5.6 G SSM and thislens is a lot faster and it might be me but it also feels a little lighter! Ipaired this Lens with a Sony a77ii camera and I am very pleased with theresults I got! Can't wait to get out on a clear day and really see what I cando with it this camera and lens! My only regret is that I appear that they havediscontinued the Sony a77ii camera love that camera!Thank YouB&H Photo for having great products at a great price!

I love this lens for wildlife photography on my A-68. I purchased one a few years ago, but fell in the creek with it, so this is a replacement. The first replacement I ordered didnt test out perfectly, but B&H quickly replaced it with no questions asked. This one is extremely sharp wide open at 400mm and focuses extremely fast. Heres six recent photos - some wide open at ISO-3200+. The fox kit was underexposed by about one f-stop so is really more like ISO-6400 - still with nice fur detail. Getting best focus results might require micro-focus adjustment. Mine required a setting of +6.

Outstanding High-End Telephoto Lens for A-Mount!

This was my first professional "white" lens purchase. The original cost of this lens has always been above my comfort zone so I put this purchase off for far too long. Nowadays, as Sony has moved to the E-mount cameras and lenses, A-mount equipment across the board has dropped in price and many items considered outside my purchase range are now within. Such is the case with the Sony 70-400 SSMII lens. Crisp and clear with great contrast across most of the range. I've found it a little soft at 400mm but nothing to really complain about. Truly a great lens and one that I hope to use more especially for nature photography. The one thing that you must be aware of is the weight of this lens. It isn't something you'd want to haul around all day in the wilds as your arms will tire quickly. Use of a mono or tripod greatly adds to the usability especially at long telephoto distances. This lens original cost exceeded $2,000 but can be had in the $800 range if you are diligent.
