4K Beast that can game too...

TV is great and an all rounder. Good for games, content, and movies. The only complaint I have is that the local dimming for this series is mid tier and can be very visible during white or blank scenes. I think it's a fair trade off for the price and the technology it uses. To be honest you will only every notice it 1% of the time unless you stay on loading screens a lot.The gaming experience is future proofed as it can actually support the PS5, XBOX, and PC games. My beefy pc can't even run 120fps at 4k all the time so I haven't used this TV to it's full potential just yet and plan to in the future. You won't be disappointed and the value it brings will last for years. Granted that most people buy such an expensive TV with the mindset to keep it for a decade.

According to my research, the 2 series were very similar, with the edge going slightly to the X90J. That being said, some of the specs that were important to me tilted to the X85J.Best Buy had a lot of different brands and models on display, so I spent some time looking at some of the models that I had ruled out on paper. After viewing several models, I agreed with my research that the Sony TVs had the best picture and specs for the money I was intending to spend. One of the displays they had was exactly what I needed to see, a 55" over a 65", right next to a 75". Seeing the 55" over the 65" quickly convinced me that there wasn't enough size difference to justify spending the money for my upgrade, so I was leaning heavily toward the bigger screen. The sales rep that helped me had been with Best Buy for a couple of years and was very knowledgeable. He pointed out the differences between the 2 models, then discussed my needs. He agreed with me that the 75" was going to make me happier. The next challenge was whether or not it was going to fit in my SUV. He borrowed a tape measure for me and we measured the box. I went out to the car and measured, determining that the width would work getting it in, but I was about 8 inches short getting it in lengthwise with the front seats as far up as I could get them and still drive. I remeasured at an angle and estimated that if I took the headrests off we could rest it on the back of top of the seats. I went back inside with a big smile and said "Let's do this."I bought the 75", we opened it to make sure the screen wasn't cracked, and plugged it in and fired it up to make sure I didn't lose the "panel lottery." Everything checked out, so I went to get the car while he brought the TV to the front door.It took a lot of maneuvering, and I think he said 3 times "It's nit gonna fit," but sure enough, we got it in safely.Once I got it home my roommate and I had it unboxed and up on the wall in about 1 minutes. Setup was a breeze, and the picture looks fabulous in my living room!Just a reminder, TVs look a whole lot bigger in your house than they do in a massive warehouse sized building with high ceilings. Make sure you measure where your new TV will go before you buy it!

Sound isn't as expected, it's a bit flat and not many profiles available to adjust this as with other tvs. Same with picture, not many profiles and doesn't handle fast moving images well. Wifi and screen sharing is really poor. My old Samsung still does this better the this Sony tv. Constantly losing connection and crashing so had to use a cable across my lounge for internet connection. Full of bloat wear, a lot of apps which can't be uninstalled and if you don't use the big subscription services, ie, netflix, disney etc you'll find the TV very annoying. Good points are, not much screen glare, better than the LG and Samsung items, PS4 connectivity is good and works seemlessly. Has a designated slot once plugged in. Also connecting Bluetooth mouse and keyboard is also good, however, mouse does not work well, is too fast and so far can't find options to adjust this so is useless.

However, while it excels in several areas, its operating system with Google TV, mediocre Wi-Fi connectivity, and some limitations in the operating system itself may leave some users wanting more. Let's dive deeper into the strengths and weaknesses of this TV.Picture Quality: 9/10One of the standout features of the Sony 55-Inch TV is its exceptional picture quality. With vibrant colors, deep blacks, and stunning contrast, this TV brings your favorite movies, shows, and games to life. The 4K resolution delivers sharp details, and the HDR technology enhances the dynamic range, providing an immersive viewing experience. Whether you're watching a blockbuster movie or playing the latest games, the picture quality on this Sony TV is truly impressive.Sound: 8/10Accompanying the outstanding visuals is the TV's audio performance. The built-in speakers produce rich and powerful sound, immersing you in your favorite content. The well-tuned audio profile ensures clear dialogue, punchy bass, and detailed audio effects. While the TV's sound quality is commendable, audiophiles may still prefer a dedicated sound system for a more immersive and refined audio experience.120Hz Motion: 9/10If you're a fan of smooth and fluid motion, the Sony 55-Inch TV's 120Hz refresh rate won't disappoint. Whether you're watching fast-paced sports, action-packed movies, or playing video games, the high refresh rate minimizes motion blur, resulting in crystal-clear and realistic visuals. The TV's impressive motion handling ensures that even the most demanding content looks incredibly smooth and lifelike.Operating System with Google TV: 6/10While the Sony TV offers the convenience of Google TV as its operating system, it falls short in terms of user experience. The interface can feel cluttered and sluggish at times, making it less intuitive to navigate through various apps and settings. Additionally, occasional software glitches and delays can be frustrating. Sony could improve the overall performance and usability of the operating system to enhance the user experience.Wi-Fi Connection: 7/10One area where the Sony 55-Inch TV lags behind is its Wi-Fi connectivity. While it does provide wireless connectivity, the performance can be inconsistent. Some users may experience occasional drops in connection or slower streaming speeds, which can hinder the overall viewing experience. It's advisable to use a wired connection or consider a separate Wi-Fi extender if you encounter frequent connectivity issues.Operating System Limitations: 7/10Apart from the performance issues, the operating system itself has some limitations. Certain popular streaming apps may be absent or have limited functionality, which can be frustrating for users who rely heavily on specific platforms. While software updates may address some of these limitations over time, it's worth considering if you heavily depend on specific streaming services. Conclusion:The Sony 55-Inch TV boasts incredible picture quality, immersive sound, and smooth 120Hz motion, providing a fantastic viewing experience. However, its operating system with Google TV leaves room for improvement, with occasional sluggishness and software glitches. Additionally, the Wi-Fi connectivity can be inconsistent, affecting the streaming experience. Despite these weaknesses, if you value stunning visuals and immersive sound, this TV is still a strong contender in its class.

Impressive Picture Quality and Smart Features

I recently purchased the Sony X85J Series LED 4K UHD Smart Google TV from BestBuy, and I must say, it has been an excellent addition to my home entertainment setup. As an honest and unbiased customer, I'd like to share my experience with this television.First and foremost, the picture quality of the Sony X85J is absolutely stunning. The 50" LED display with 4K UHD resolution delivers vivid and lifelike visuals. Whether I'm watching movies, streaming content, or playing video games, the clarity and detail are top-notch. The colors are vibrant, and the contrast is impressive, thanks to the Full Array LED backlighting. Additionally, the X1 4K HDR processor ensures that the content looks its best, optimizing colors, contrast, and motion for a truly immersive viewing experience. The smart features of this Google TV are also worth mentioning. The integration of Google Assistant and Chromecast makes navigating and accessing content a breeze. With just a simple voice command, I can search for movies, TV shows, or even control other smart devices in my home. The Google Play Store provides a vast selection of apps and streaming services, allowing me to enjoy a wide range of entertainment options. The user interface is intuitive and easy to navigate, making it accessible even for those who aren't tech-savvy.Setting up the TV was a straightforward process, and the remote control is well-designed, comfortable to hold, and responsive. I appreciate the inclusion of dedicated buttons for popular streaming services like Netflix and YouTube, providing quick access to my favorite apps. The connectivity options, including multiple HDMI and USB ports, ensure compatibility with various devices, such as gaming consoles, Blu-ray players, and soundbars. While the Sony X85J excels in many areas, there are a couple of minor downsides worth mentioning. Firstly, the built-in speakers are decent, but for an optimal audio experience, I would recommend connecting external speakers or a soundbar. Additionally, the viewing angles could be slightly better, as there is a noticeable drop in picture quality when viewing from extreme angles. However, these are relatively minor issues that can be easily addressed depending on your preferences and setup. In conclusion, the Sony X85J Series LED 4K UHD Smart Google TV is an impressive television that delivers exceptional picture quality and offers a seamless smart TV experience. With its stunning visuals, intuitive user interface, and integration of Google Assistant and Chromecast, it enhances your home entertainment to the next level. While there are some minor drawbacks, the overall performance and features make it a worthwhile investment for any movie buff, gamer, or tech enthusiast. I am delighted with my purchase, and I would highly recommend the Sony X85J to anyone in search of a high-quality smart TV.Disclaimer: This review is based on my personal experience with the Sony X85J Series LED 4K UHD Smart Google TV and may not reflect everyone's experience.

Okay, but riddled with issues.
28 August 2023

Had this for two years now. Picture is okay, but certainly not the best. The I/O board (HDMI, Ethernet, etc...) has been a huge issue since almost the beginning, causing me to reboot, reset, or unplug. The Google operating system is aweful and extremely sluggish, sometimes freezing entirely. I'll finally be ordering a new main/IO board at some point and will see how it goes. Pretty dissapointed with Sony. Over the years I have had many Sony products with defective components, cold solder joints and other issues. The majority I successfully repaired, but their quality control needs a bit of help. Although I am retired and haven't done it in years, I repaired electronics for decades and Sony was the most common television I came across. Really disappointing
17 December 2022

Have had the Sony bravia a year now and can honestly say it's the most disappointing Sony product I have ever owned and the worst tv. My 8 year old samsung is more stable and is easier to use. It never crashes and I never have to reset it.Initially, instore I thought the picture quality was better compared to the other tvs, had a clearer image, deeper tones and darker dark areas. Once home though I noticed that the google aspect is just a gimmick. The OS is really flakey, constantly having to reset the system, apps don't load properly, sound keeps lowering and becoming crackly. The apps like itv are not up to date like my old Samsung tv, they don't show live content. Casting to the device is slow with constant breaks in connectivity. Sound quality is poor as standard. The tv is cheap looking and the controller feels cheap in the hand too. Settings are poor, there isn't much to toggle with to set up to your preferences. Everything is very limited including sound settings. The sound is very flat and doesn't have the lovely deap surround sound of their stereos or the 12 year bravia I had which was 32 inches and far better than this tv. Although at the time wasn't smart but this isn't really either. The initial desktop you are shown once loaded is muddled and shows nothing of relevance. Menus are bloated not easily accessible. It needs to be more Google and it's not. Sony have just used the name and the search function but that's it. The tv has gotten worse with age and after only a year airways feels like it's going to crash.Have called Sony many times, initially they were helpful but with persistent problems have just started playing the usual game of fobbing me off. Their answer to my issues is to keep resetting the tv to factory settings or update to latest system even though it is already and have supplied the evidence. They said they would send an engineer but now not interested in helping.

Sony seems to be running a lottery with the X85J

I did my research before buying, and I figured that most of the users having issues was due to user error, the settings are a lot more complicated these days! However, I was very disappointed once I figured out what was going on under the hood. The screen looked funky since the second I turned it on. Pixels looked like they were almost aligned in a checkerboard pattern, skipping between even and odd columns from row to row. I figured hey, maybe it was just some new way of aligning pixels for a 4K set. Then after fiddling around some more, I discovered switching the TV to the Graphics Picture mode changes everything. Every pixel is used, in every column and every row. I figured hey, maybe it was just some new way of aligning pixels for a 4K set. Then after fiddling around some more, I discovered switching the TV to the Graphics Picture mode changes everything. Every pixel is used, in every column and every row. Anything that was a rectangle instantly had nice and smooth edges, rather than choppy ones looking like they were drawn with dotted lines. You can't really notice from far away, but something isn't right when you get close. Even from far away you lose a bit of detail, and aliased edges look worse. When taking pictures of this, I also discovered that my unit had some dead pixels. I've arranged to exchange it tomorrow, but after talking to Sony directly who said that this was a "feature" but refused to tell me which TV's did not have the feature, beyond the A80J which I already knew didn't do this, as someone on reddit who changed their mind from an X85J to an A80J was kind enough to take a close look for me.The kicker is, while arranging transportation, turns out one of my friends' roommates bought this exact TV, but from Amazon! They gave a little more weight to the reviews, what I wrote off as user error, they figured they were taking a chance, and they were right! Their exact same TV, same 43" X85J from Amazon, does not do what my set does. I trust them, but to be 110% sure I'm going to see it with my own eyes tomorrow.By using every other pixel its effectively 1920x1080p, just spaced out across 3840x2160p. It would be fine if I was OK with using the TV In Graphics Picture mode all the time, but I'm actually a fan of motionflow and frame interpolation. Its not fair that someone I know paid the exact same amount as me, got the same size and model of TV, but theirs actually has all its bells and whistles in 4K while I have to turn mine off to get actual 4K.I'm hoping that when I exchange my unit tomorrow, I might be lucky and get a good unit like my friends' roommate. I wouldn't be surprised however if its another lemon, and I have to go to Amazon to get a decent unit. I'll update my review later if possible!

Warranty replacement

This is my second one of these replaced under warranty as the first one would not connect to wifi and had sound issues where the sound kept on cutting in and out and freezing up the picture which I believe is connected to the wifi issue. Had 3 tech call outs and eventually was offered a new one. Should have taken a year to get a new one when it was obviously faulty. New one is working as it should. The picture quality is as good as it gets with the content currently available. Very little reason to justify buying the more expensive models. Based on Australian tv quality you're not going to improve on 1080i. And Foxtel 4k is heavily compressed and is not a true 4k. I wouldn't recommend this particular model because of the problems I incurred. X90J screen with X80J processor.

I got this slightly on sale and it's a very nice, balanced screen. There are absolutely better but your wallet will feel the difference. The 75in model is five FEET wide and over 70lbs, I have confidence in my hands but I still chose to have it delivered and installed.Yes it will do 4K120 video and yes it finally got the VRR update for console gaming. This is a good TV for gaming on a PS5. At 100/120fps the processor operates at reduced vertical resolution and makes small text look worse, but in a fast paced game it looked fine to me and felt very responsive. I strongly suggest only using 4K60 settings on any connected PC.HDR quality is convincing. Viewing angles are a bit narrow; you want the TV at a good height and you want to be in front of it not off to the side. Contrast is very good with minimal black glow in a dark room. Looks sometimes better and sometimes worse than the X90, this is due to different CPU and whole-frame vs zone-based dimming. Extended media settings and smart TV features seem to be excellent. As expected it works better with a Sony soundbar and 4K blu ray player....don't expect much from the built-in speakers if you listen to more than the local news. You can get HDR and Dolby Vision content in some shows on the streaming video services and they look excellent.Again this TV is not perfect in every way but it looks much better than the X80 series, it performs well enough as a console gaming screen, and you can add a soundbar while still coming out cheaper than the X90 or an OLED. A solid family TV.PS remember to enable the Reality Creation feature on whichever hdmi is connected to your blu ray player, it makes a nice difference. Be careful, not all video input modes work with all devices and a little trial-and-error may be needed.
