I purchased this as a trial to see how it matches my Canon equipment. I was totally impressed with the quality of the pictures and build. I use this with a combination of Sony, Zeiss and Leica lenses. This particular camera is compact and light and offers considerable customisation features, to help avoid using the complex default menus.I was so impressed with this one that I sold all my Canon gear and bough a second Sony high resolution Alpha 7RThese camera provide excellent value for money when compared with the latest offering from Canon with eye watering prices..

Used at a Nephews wedding on its first outing. The wedding was in winter so light was an issue. The kit lens, it came with, suffered because of the limited f stop, but I didn't realise that the ISO range was so wide on automatic that the camera fooled me into believing I could get away with it. The consequences are a number blurred or noisy shots. The outside shots were crisp and sharp, so I can't blame the camera, it was obviously the user. I'm looking forward to using it in better light conditions and obviously getting to know it better. It looks beautiful and is very light and compact for a full frame. I just wished it had a bit of fill in flash, or a mini flash like the OMDs. I note the flash unit is expensive for what it is. I may consider the faster 50mm ... Picked this up as a used camera from eBay with only 500 shutter actuations.I immediately ordered an LA-EA4 adapter so I could use all of my A-mount lenses from may A65 on it which, although expensive at £189, saved me from having to buy all new e mount lenses which would have been way more expensive.Unfortunately it didn’t arrive in time for my first outing so I dashed to curry’s and bought the cheapest 50mm f1.8 lens so I could use it. I’m so glad I did because although the auto focus is a little slow the IQ and depth of field are spot on and the low light performance is fantastic. The Exp Comp scale is out of the focus range of the diopter.Shutter butter is difficult to locate especially in portrait mode, is too low resulting in missed shots. Three dials not easy to locate and turn. C2 button is out of the wayBattery size and access is poor.Shutter slap too loud for wildlife photography.Mains adapter is expensive. Control dial too easily moved by accident as us C1 button under the Exp Comp dial.Good AEL and AF function when MF is configured on down lever position.Good solid construction, feel, size and weight, screen and tilt.Good display options, mode dial and Customise buttons.Good Apps and Remote connectivity.Great pictures.Overall the control aspects of the A7 are the most disappointing of all the Sony cameras I have ... Bought as a package with the standard Sony zoom lens. This is a great combination, wide angle at one end for family photos when out and about to small zoom. The body is quite light being mainly magnesium alloy and being mirrorless (which makes it thinner). Personally I see no reason to chose the much more expensive models. There are many controls. But you can just point and shoot. The viewing panel is quite bright even in daylight. The electronic viewfinder is good if you are a traditionalist! Very good value, particular taking into account the £150 cashback which is available in the UK at the moment. Very pleased with this camera. Small, lightweight and still has very advanced creative features. It really has made being out and about with my camera a pleasure, it's amazing how much difference it can make to the whole experience of taking photos when you carry around such a lightweight package. Image quality is very detailed and colours bright. On manual setting the three main dials ie aperture, iso and shutter speed are all within easy to reach. Sony products generally all feel reasuringly well made and this camera is no exception. One observation I have is the camera strap is very comfortable, effortlessly doing it's job on my shoulder without being obtrusive. If you can get the sony case to go with it, get it, as it has the same lightweight, unobtrusive ... MoreVery pleased with this camera. I got this as a stop-gap while saving for the mk3. Was on double promotion, so great value for money.Moved from a Canon 550d, and this is smaller and slightly lighter which is makes the whole mirrorless worth it. No complaints about battery life, maybe because I'm coming from a very old camera.Buttons could be a bit nicer placement. I think the later versions fixed these issues. I'm ok with that, for the price I paid.I'm upset that it won't let me preview through a laptop (my 10-year-old Canon did!), and the workflow doesn't seem that smooth - I struggled to have photos taken on computer transfer smoothly, so I gave up and just shoot in-camera & take the memory card out of the camera or transfer via USB rather than shoot on computer.Image quality is very ... I think I need more lenses, but the Canon L lens I've been using with an adapter works well and had some lovely quality. Enjoying the extra dynamic range Sony has over Canon. The kit lens included is ok. It works very smoothly, and I love the manual focus feature (where it zooms in when it senses that you're turning the focus ring, then out again). I've also tried using a 50-year-old M42 lens with a tilt-shift adapter for some lovely arty images - and was able to set one of the custom buttons to do the zoom in/out feature as obviously an old lens wouldn't be able to tell the camera it was being focused.Overall, I'm very happy with this, but at the same time, I can see myself wanting to upgrade in the near future (when I have money!).
Bought as I needed better resolution and less noise than a m43 can provide.I photograph extreme macro subject up to 7x lifesize and wanted the better signal/noise a 35mm sensor can provide. My previous camera had all kinds of ergonomic deficits, namely buttons in the wrong place that kept getting unintentionally pressed and was causing me to lose shots due to incorrect settings. This camera handles very well, is beautifully made and handles exactly as I need it to. Most of the buttons are in the right place, though the review zoom button magnifies the screen image massively and I always have to zoom out to actually see the detail I want. Most of the buttons are in the right place, though the review zoom button magnifies the screen image massively and I always have to zoom out to actually see the detail I want. The button is also in a difficult to reach position. The menu system, as with most Sony cameras is just rubbish. It looks 10 years out of date, is unnecessarily complicated and requires the user to scroll through the whole menu instead of having sub-menus. Controlling the camera via wifi is difficult, non-intuitive and basically a painful experience, though this is down to the rubbish software that Sony has foisted upon us. It is not a fault of the camera.I use this camera with non-system lenses when not involved with macro work and find the ev to be less than good, and the exposure meter non-intuitive and unreliable. Need to make a test exposure and check against a histogram.I'm sure it would be more user friendly with system lenses, though these are very expensive.Another very surprising problem, and this is quite a nuisance, is that there is no intervalometer built into the camera. I assumed any camera of this calibre would have one, but no, you need to download and install one from Sony for £8.00. This is a problem for astronomical photographers or those wanting to do time lapse. Come on Sony, give us what we expect.
The A7 camera is great value for money and has some very advanced features, despite being quite a few generations old at this point. The image quality is good, handling is good, I especially like all of the customisable menus. The autofocus works well in good light, but struggles a bit in darker conditions. In good conditions it is almost instant and can track faces and eyes around the frame with no problem. Lock on autofocus is very clever and works exceptionally well. I’ve used this camera for some sports shots with a local hockey team and it nailed the focus every time.My normal photographic genre is portraiture and I am impressed with the detail that the camera can reproduce, when combined with a good lens such as the FE 85/1.8. Dynamic range is quite staggering, especially if you’re upgrading from an APS-C based camera.Overall, I am impressed. My only negative points would be about the lack of stabilisation in the body and the poor autofocus in dark conditions.
Mine is the older model so alot wiil have changed but it was considerably cheaper. Being mirror less keeps it very light & compact for such a high end & capable camera. Bought it eventually to use for astrophotography so wanted a full frame sensor. Only criticisms so far are the usual: screen doesn't pivot round and you cannot run it on external power. Also it doesn't save images as RAW but uses Sony's version ARW. Not sure though if this will make much practical difference yet. One big thing though & reason for 4 not 5 stars is the appalling app for connecting to a phone or pc. I still haven't managed to connect it yet so no easy way to transfer images.
