The A7RV is another excellent step in the evolution of Alpha R series cameras and Alpha cameras in general.I have had the Alpha A7R II, A7R III, A7R IV and now this A7R V (also the A7 III, the A7IV, A9, A7S III and currently have an Alpha 1). They were all good camera and just kept getting better. My main camera is the Alpha 1 but I need a second body on many shoots. What makes the A7R V a great compliment is not only can it match and slightly exceed the A1's resolution, it has a very useful medium raw file size, which I use a lot of the time, as that's the size my clients want. The new multi angle screen is a game changer for my architectural photography, where I often need to back the camera into tight spaces. The autofocus system on the A7R V is superb . . . ... MoreThe A7RV is another excellent step in the evolution of Alpha R series cameras and Alpha cameras in general.I have had the Alpha A7R II, A7R III, A7R IV and now this A7R V (also the A7 III, the A7IV, A9, A7S III and currently have an Alpha 1). This is not a great camera for fast moving subjects, due to its fairly heavy rolling shutter distortion. It is also a pretty mediocre video camera, by today's standards. This new autofocus system really needs to be on the A1, though I am sure that will come. Sony is developing cameras (and the whole Alpha system) at a break neck pace. There really is no viable opposition at a professional level yet. What drew me to Sony full frame cameras is the size and portability of the system, for which the A7R V is no exception. I am not sure Sony's "competition" got the memo on that one.

Some bodies are slow. Some are fast. It's totally chaos. Why can Sony, a legendary visionary of technology, do everything right in a camera body except the one most vital thing for people who are using these cameras professionally and must have all their photos time stamps perfectly in sync with live stats, wire networks, etc.?Imagine what a dance routine for the Rockettes looks like when the photos are 7 seconds out of sync and taken with 6 different cameras, and a poor press staffer is trying to process a live stream in almost real time but it is totally out of order because the chronological timestamps are all randomly wrong.Fix it, Sony.If you can make cameras this great, surely you can figure out how to put in a clock that is equally great. Even if it's only as great as clocks were 100 years ago, that would still be 100 times better than what your product offers now.You can do it, Sony.I believe in you.

Upgraded from an A7iii. Did my research before to check it improved upon all the things I was not so pleased about the 7iii. Whilst I am very happy the camera there are some things I think that could be improved on/add as follows (at least based on my initial experience):1. Would like to be able to customise the icons shown in the everything on black display2. Very surprised the icons don't rotate in the viewfinder/rear screen preview when changing orientation3. Despite the resolution of the viewfinder the text and icons appear pixelated/jagged edges. The image itself is great.4. Would like the option of enabling the camera level info in any display variant I choose rather than having it only available in one display option5. Would like the option to have larger text on the rear of the camera. Have to put glasses on now to read this as my eyes have started to get older than I feel.7. One of a number of reasons to upgrade was to make focus stacking easier. It is but I feel this could be much easier. I would have liked the option to select the closest and furthest points in the scene and then based on the selected aperture the camera automatically shoots the required number of shots to cover the desired focus range. Instead you have the option to select the closest point but then have to through trial and error check the gap between focus distances used in the series of frames is right for the scene. This makes it more involved and can end up in more shots being taken than needed.7. It would be good to have some form of depth of field scale that can be referenced with hyper focal distance to avoid having to go into apps like photo pills for such info8. Not able to set a 2 second timer with focus bracketing9. Sony should add breathing compensation to stills, especially focus bracketing10. I wish Sony would make a compatible L bracket which would allow full use of the articulating screen, I've looked at so many 3rd parties and they are either more bulky than they need to be and/or compromise the use of the display.

Since the RX1 Sony's full frame mirrorless cameras have become increasingly refined. From the RX1R II and the a7R III forward improvements have been significant from version to version. The a7R V follows in that trajectory. In the absence of creativity and an imagination it's not going to work miracles. Learn how to use it and you can generate some impressive results. My personal system includes the Sony ECM-B1M mic, the 24mm f/1.4 GM, the 55mm f/1.8 ZA and the FE 35mm f/1.8. All of them are a little different but have particular qualities that make each outstanding. Together the entire system fits in a small shoulder bag and allows me to make 40x60 prints and 4K video with impressive visual quality.
I bought this camera originally as an efficiency upgrade from the A7riv and A7iv to combine their strengths into a single body and also as a potential 4th camera in my video kit for multicam jobs. After some initial testing, this camera has become my go-to mirrorless body for smaller video jobs lately due to the stabilisation alone. The 8 stops of IBIS is a marked improvement versus the 5/5.5 stops on my other Alpha bodies and has allowed me to reduce the amount of kit I'm bringing to smaller/faster jobs, where I might have brought my FX6/FX3 previously. Plus this camera has excellent heat dissipation in 4K modes, which I've previously had issues with on my A7iv. Plus this camera has excellent heat dissipation in 4K modes, which I've previously had issues with on my A7iv. Camera button input latency and menu system operation are also much improved over the A7riv making the shooting experience much more enjoyable and natural, just instant feedback. The addition of toggling AF Tracking-On via a button in video mode is also a major usability improvement which I now find myself longing for in every other Sony body I own.Cons: EVF quality is very good, but I can't help feeling my A7siii EVF is clearer, despite being the same dot count. Perhaps downscaling 61mps vs 12mp in live view is to blame. Rear LCD is probably the weakest part of the camera, and the con I'm least forgiving of. For a camera this price, it should have an incredible rear LCD but the very first thing I noticed about this camera were fixed vertical lines in the LCD when displaying solid lighter colours. Took a lot of effort to look past this in light of how great the camera is otherwise.Future Functionality: Down the line, I'd absolutely love to see the addition of an 8K timelapse video mode in the S&Q menu and the ability to load even just 2-3 user luts into the camera for basic monitoring. This is now a common feature of many camera makes and I see no reason not to extend a basic lut system in the camera. 4K XAVC-HS 25p/50p would be incredibly useful also, no idea why only NTSC frame rates are possible when shooting 4K HEVC codecs. In conclusion: The A7Rv has very quickly become my go-to Sony hybrid camera. It's becoming increasingly difficult to pass up when selecting a camera for a given project unless I need specific features of the FX6/FX3/A7siii. This camera will be with me for a very long time.
Thank you for allowing me to pen a review, although, with my amateur geezer photographer status I hardly feel qualified for such an endeavor, but here goesâŠ. I will get the negatives (no pun intended) out of the way first. I was very surprised at the size of the A7RV compared to my old Kodak Instamatic that I donated to the Smithsonian Institution and also the fact that I still havenât figured out how to attach the âflash cubesâ to the Sony! Fortunately it shoots in very low light so the âcubesâ may not be needed. I purchased a set of âslightly usedâ bicycle training wheels and modified a mount on my tripod for them. Also had to modify a small âcome-alongâ to elevate the camera to the tripod attachment. Hey, âessence is the Mother of inventionâ. The only problem would be with straight up photos, but the articulating LCD screen should alleviate that providing my gym work will also allow ME to articulate like a contortionist for viewing. As for the âpositivesâ on this wonderful device, Iâm still kinda struggling with that for the moment. I purchased the A7RV primarily due to the significant summer sale at $1000 below list price ($2813).I consider this camera a refinement of my A7RIV incorporating all of Sonyâs recent technologies. I consider this camera as a photo first camera and less of hybrid one.At the introductory price of the A7RV, I considered this camera as a very poorly priced for its capabilities. If you can get this camera to below $3000, I would recommend it as a great buy.Otherwise, look elsewhere.
Let's get this out of the way first, the image quality is stunning, great detail and the camera has the best colours yet for Sony in my opinion, it's the first Sony I've used where I'd actually be happy using the jpegs. Having such resolution it also gives you the option of using APS-C lenses if you want to travel light, and you still get 26mp.The IBIS is great, I can easily and consistently handhold for 1s with a 35mm lens, something I can't do consistently with my A1.Subject recognition is unbelievably good, and actually noticably better than my A1. It consistently picks up on the eyes of different animals better than the A1, and any other camera I've used. It consistently picks up on the eyes of different animals better than the A1, and any other camera I've used. Quite often with animal recognition the camera will pick up on the ear rather than the eye, a prime example of this is my French Bulldog who has a black face and dark eyes, the A1 more often than not thinks her ears are her eyes, when I had the A7R IV that was the same. The A7R V has no such issues, it finds the eyes 99% of the time, it's like some sort of wizardry. I've not tested tracking in tricky situations yet so can't compare it to the A1, but it terms of recognition it's superb. The EVF is amazing, very clear and detailed however I'm on the fence about the multi-angle LCD screen. Firstly it feels a little plasticky and cheap, and secondly I don't seem to be able to just tilt the screen as the way I grab the screen it also pulls it out sideways. I'll likely get used to it and have to grab the screen differently, but having been used to the tilt screens on Sonys for a number of years now it's taking some adjusting to.The A7R V is the very slow readout speed of the electronic shutter meaning that the electronic shutter cannot be used for anything moving even slightly which is a bit of a shame. Also, having a max shutter speed of 1/8000 means that you can't use fast lenses outdoors in the summer without using ND filters. The frame rate's not great, to get the max speed you need to use compressed raw, and even then at 10fps you're not getting a live view, if you want a live view the max frame rate is 8fps. I understand this isn't an action camera though and it seems to be pretty average for cameras of this type.My last small niggle with the A7R V is that they've omitted the reset of the Exp Comp when you turn the camera off. I use the top dial as an exp comp as it's always been this way before they allowed it to be multifunction and before you could see what the exp comp was by simply looking at the dial as it was marked. As it's now multifunction it's not marked but it retains the previously used exp comp when you turn it off meaning if you've not remembered this then you can end up shooting at the wrong exposure next time. It would be great to have the option to have it reset when you turn it off like you could on previous Sonys.I know this sounds like there's a number of negatives but they're not major and ones like the frame rate and shutter speed I was aware of before purchasing. Overall this is a great camera, the image quality is superb, the colours are great, and it's done everything I've asked of it to date. I've been extremely impressed by the subject recognition and the IBIS
DO NOT buy the open box version of this (or any other) camera. I made the mistake of ordering an open box version of this camera from BestBuy online. It was delivered to my home yesterday, and everything looked great...until I pulled the camera out of the box.My first clue that something was wrong was the cool flippy-tilty screen innovation that Sony invented for the a7rv. The screen on this camera tilted, but it didn't flip or rotate. At first I thought I was doing something wrong, but quickly came to the horrific realization that my "open box a7rv" was NOT an a7rv.I immediately took this into my local store and asked for a manager, as this is a serious (criminal) issue. The 'experience supervisor' came to help me along with their photo guy (both were fantastic), and we determined that this camera was actually an old a7iii that someone in Ohio (where the camera came from) had doctored to LOOK like an a7rv to the untrained eye. It appears they bought the a7rv, took the stickers and bottom plate off, put them on their old a7iii, and then returned it.Here's where it gets really annoying. I thought at the time my local store was going to help with with this (very serious) issue...until they called the store manager who wasn't working that day. The manager said their policy required me to call 888-BEST-BUY to process a return. So, I called the number, and did my best to explain to the overseas call center employee the severity of this situation. I'm still unsure if he even understood what I was saying, and just sent me a UPS label to return the camera. So, I dropped the camera off at the UPS store for return, but now I'm asking myself...."is this thing going to go BACK into the "open box" category for sale on the website when they receive it??? I was never able to get anyone to really commit to helping me with this issue, other than just processing my return.I'm the type that wants someone in authority to address this situation with me directly, and provide me with some assurances that this won't happen again. I didn't get that from this experience at all. I got a bunch of 'passing the buck', so I'm now worried one of YOU will end up with this same situation. So, BUYER BEWARE! DO NOT buy an open box item from Best Buy.Photos attached show several of the discrepancies in this camera: the a7rv sticker is in the wrong spot on the camera, the bottom plate was clearly swapped, the record button is in the wrong place, the mode dial doesn't have the lock button, the flippy screen issue (that you can't see in the photo), the joystick has a different texture. I didn't take a picture of the menu screen, but it identifies the camera as ILCE-7m3. Also, the card slots were only for SD cards, not CFExpress type A cards.Although the two employees I spoke with were both wonderful and understanding, I am FURIOUS with the way this was handled, INCONVENIENCED by having to make multiple trips into town to talk with them and then to drop it off at the UPS store, and to add insult to injury, UPS made me buy a roll of tape to seal the box before shipping (because I broke down the shipping box after opening it).I view this as a sweeping failure on the part of Best Buy on both sides of this transaction. DO NOT BUY!
Sony A7RV-The last camera I bought and it still works was the Sony Alpha A77 APSC crop sensor well most the glass I bought 85mm 1.4, 70-200 SSM G lens and 100 mm macro 2.8 ,70-300 SSM G lens and tons of other Alpha series A mount lenses.. Well with the Sony LA-EA5 A-mount Lens Adapter for E-mount Cameras I am able to use all this glass and they have never focused so fast on my other bodies SSM Amount lenses are silent and fast focusing no misses..I thought Sony abandoned us A-mount users but they didnt they needed E mount lenses because 61 MP is going to show you the weakness of your lenses.. Dont even try the beer can its sadly a horrible lens under a full 61 mp.. but the 35-105 Minolta lens is pretty good for its age..but to add even more magic to this camera ... MoreSony A7RV-The last camera I bought and it still works was the Sony Alpha A77 APSC crop sensor well most the glass I bought 85mm 1.4, 70-200 SSM G lens and 100 mm macro 2.8 ,70-300 SSM G lens and tons of other Alpha series A mount lenses.. Dont even try the beer can its sadly a horrible lens under a full 61 mp.. but the 35-105 Minolta lens is pretty good for its age..but to add even more magic to this camera Sony added A full frame sensor and gives you the option to switch to A cropped mode so you can use the sweet spot of some old lenses or use crop sensor lenses.. or if you have a 100mm on you hit crop mode now you have 150mm without changing lenses at the cost of it being 26 MP but who cares phenominal..So if you own A-mount and you have 6 old Sony flashes with the odd ball hot shoe well sony gave us a adapter Sony Multi Interface Shoe Adapter.. So I put on a Sony HVL -42 A.M. flash works perfect TTL exposure spot on all functions flawlessSame with the Sony flash HVL- 58 A.M. HVL 46 A.M.The only thing that wont work the wireless optical but I use radio triggers so no big deal to me..Onto the Camera A7RV the focus is crazy fast and it dont miss a picture or blur anythere are so many focus settings in the menu..The picture colors are spot on great color renditionMemory card:I found the Samsung pro ultimate 512 GB SDXC card works pretty good for all my pics and video I do it will record 8k and its a big file ..But if you want to be sure your getting every movie frame your gonna have to buy the Sony CFexpress type A memory card my videos look fine but I dont know if I am sacrificing frames for a cheaper memory card not sure..But the Samsung wont bring disappointment for it being 512 gb at 62 dollars vs 960 GB of Sony CF express A memory costing $692 dollars..I also use old Minolta Rokker lenses with an adapter on the Sony A7RV and since they are manual focus I use the zebra setting to see what's in focus..Movie mode is great as long as you know the limitations of the camera more than I will ever need but if you want to see real clarity on your big screen TV it wont dissapoint.. no your Apple camera phone won't even hold a candle to it on the big screen..The flip out rotate lcd on the back is a game changer its reall nice to angle it where I need it..I also use remote shooting with my Samusung Ultra tab S9 so anyone I am shooting can see the shot as its happening on the 14 inch tablet beautiful..The camera will also upload all my photos onto my tablet so I can edit them all on the fly love that I dont hook a cable to my pc anymore ..I am forgetting a 100 things but its a remarkable camera a.azing tool..
