A BEAST On A Strap

Who is this camera for? The Sony a9 III camera is a beast! It is for the dedicated photographer; as not many photographers need to photograph a speeding bullet or need a 80,000th of a second shutter speed at 120 frames per second. The a9 III has many features just about all photographers may want to avail themselves with. Once one gets a handle on the operation it's becomes more fun then a barrel of monkeys! What a beast!

A big step forward!

This is my second a9 camera, I now have both an a9ii and an a9iii. The differences between the two cameras represent a big step forward so it seems to me Sony have listened to feedback from professionals who use the a9 series day in and day out.The one down-side is that the a9iii now warns you via a message if you use a non-Sony battery but that message can be dismissed. I think this is unnecessary and probably a trick by Sony to encourage use of Sony batteries.

They sent me a lemon and haven't corrected this error. If this gets resolved I will update my review, but as of right now, I can not recommend this camera to anyone.

Meh

Sure it shoots faster than any other camera but does any human need much more than 20fps RAW images? 30 is nice, 60 is way overkill except in very specific needs. The image quality in low light is maybe ever so slightly better than the A1 (the internet says its worse, I disagree), either way it’s not really noticeable. Autofocus IMO is pretty much the same. Sync is nice if you need a high speed sync it’s worth the rent.

First of all, this camera takes beautiful photographs. I am a still photographer, mostly taking photos of birds and wildlife. The images that come from this camera are equal to my A1.But, two things make this camera less than optimal. The first is that the camera viewfinder is very thick and doesn’t sit flush with the camera. It is easily knocked out of place and I fear it will break off if/when I pull my camera the wrong way. If you slide it out instead of picking it up, the viewfinder gets dislodged. That does not happen with the A1 and it is very annoying and potentially damaging to the Camera. The second thing that makes this camera less than optimal is that it is very big. It is bigger than the A1 and much much bigger than the original A9. I hope Sony reads this review and realizes that half of their market are women with potentially small hands. The original reason I went with Sony was the A9 was small and fit well in my hand and that is no longer the way they are designing their cameras. Maybe they need some women on their design team.

Sony a9iii Review

This camera is unbelievable for sports/action. I got shots I never believed were possible. Whether you are a professional sports photographer or a passionate amateur who wants amazing photos of your kids playing sports, the 120 FPS really opens up possibilities that no other camera can compare to. I also really enjoy the pre-capture feature. It makes getting the right shots a breeze because you just have to wait for the action to happen and then start clicking--knowing you will be capturing all the action you need. Highly recommended and worth the money.

Stunning Performance on Active BIrds

After pre-ordering, I received my Sony A9iii the day before I traveled to Ecuador to photograph birds. Quite a few of our target birds on this trip were hummingbirds, and so I packed my trusty Sony a1 which has always served me well; however, upon arrival at our first set of hummingbird feeders, I broke out the A9iii. The results were instantly astounding. At 120 fps, if one is able to get focused on a bird (perched or in flight) for even an instant, one will produce multiple excellent frames. Also, at 120 fps, one is unlikely to miss the perfect wing position when shooting birds in flight or upon takeoff or landing. Within 10 minutes of use, I had achieved several beautiful photos of hummingbirds landing and taking off. Within 10 minutes of use, I had achieved several beautiful photos of hummingbirds landing and taking off. Most critically, these were shots that I never seemed to get with my a1.I suppose that I expected the A9iii to be able to effectively capture birds in action. After all, how can one miss at 120 fps? However, the surprise was upon reviewing the files. They were BEAUTIFUL - Great color and an overall vibrancy that was striking. I made some heavy crops and the cropped images held up well even in 24x30 inch prints. THis is so even though the A9iii sensor sports only one-half of the megapixels of the a1.In summary, about 60% of my keepers from this Ecuador trip came from the A9iii. I achieved many shots I had not been able to achieve before. Although, I am not selling my a1, I will now turn to the remarkable Sony A9iii when heading out to photograph birds in action or in flight. Sony has made another remarkable tool for us!

Im a disabled photography so I really love Sony cameras due to the customisable aspect. This camera body has a better shutter button position than my Sony A1.The tracking is really fast and it catches the body or eye a lot quicker than the Sony A1So far this came is perfect. You can still crop lots on your photos. The A1 is the one to get if you enlarge your photos or mega crop, if not this camera will suit every need

This camera is INSANE!
3 April 2024

This camera is absolutely nuts. I shoot sports and wildlife and cannot recommend it enough. The 120fps is a bit over kill but as long as you use CFexpressA cards the buffer will clear quick. ZERO warp in the photo due to the global shutter. Dynamic range isn't the best but unnoticeable to me. Native ISO is 250 with photo and 2000 in slog which is a bit of a bummer but slap an ND on there if you slow the shutter down. 4k 120 footage with the global shutter <3 .The new grip fits better than previous models. Pricey but it is an absolute workhorse.

Yes, the tag is high but it's high for a reason. I rented one first from Sony and fell in love with it. Now I own two off then.I've been using the a7iv for photography and FX3/FX6 for video so I know Sony. The shutter sound on this is magical. Global shutter is amazing for video with the 6k downsampled to 4k at 120 no crop is NICE.DID I TELL YOU THE BURST is insane!!!?Worth
