It was time to upgrade my cameras after 10 years and take advantage of the technology that had developed in that time which demonstrated my phone produced better results. I did my research and looked ar wide range of cameras that was capable of producing both good video and photos that avoided the need for two separate cameras and a whole bunch of interchangeable lenses. I narrowed the search down to a bridge camera as being the practical camera for my amateur needs but capable of giving professional results. It became clear after searching that one camera stood out which was above my spend limit the Sony RX10 iii. Why that camera. All the reviews favoured it over the competition and there was a lot of camera packed in to it making it the Swiss Army knife of cameras that does it all and more. It has a a quality and fast (exposure wise) 25 times zoom, 4K video, acceptable low light capability, stabilizing technology, control over everything, wifi to control from your phone, and an amazing 1000 frames per second video capture. This will capture anything a camera could. The downside, all the above makes it expensive new. Perhaps the most expensive in the its category. The camera has so much packed in it makes it heavy (the same weight as a bag of sugar). Oddly Sony does not includetime-lapse which is a software download up-charge which is crazy and the rear screen has limited articulation. So is it a good camera? There is the old saying you get what you pay for, in this case you get a lot and of a high quality and yes it it is a very good camera be it amateur or professional.

I purchased my Sony RX10M3 a couple weeks ago and have been very please with the range of test shots that I have so far taken. These test shot include macro, wide angle and 600mm telephoto shot and series of fill in flash test, all of which have produced good results. The range of options and servings is at first somewhat daunting but having purchased a good user guide book and using a little common sense and experimentation I now feel comfortable with the cameras operations. The images of small birds in the garden using high speed must shutter setting are amazing. The camera on first handling feels quite heavy compared to other bridge cameras but after only a couple of week I do not really notice this, although some other users have commented on this. I have owned this for 3 months now and used it on holiday, photographing wild life and at drag racing events. The wide zoom range is very useful and pictures at the telephoto end are pleasingly good, though focusing at long zooms can be a bit slow. The viewfinder is good and bright with all the relevant information displayed.Having migrated from a DSLR with 3 lenses I find that I use this camera much more as it's much lighter and you always have sufficient zoom. With the multiple lens camera I often had the wrong lens on and would then try and juggle camera and two lenses to get the right one on with the risk of dropping something. By then the opportunity was often gone. With the RX10 I'm more relaxed knowing that I have a camera that will deal quickly with ... MoreI have owned this for 3 months now and used it on holiday, photographing wild life and at drag racing events. The Sony RX10 III is a fantastic camera; it has all the bells and whistles of a top level DSLR, and photo/ video performance that could easily compete, and it doesnât break the bank (as other cameras for the same quality may). The camera is extremely well-built; everything from the rotating zoom/ focus rings to the mechanism of the pull-out screen feels first-rate. While its bulky nature does reduce its portability, the benefit, due to this, of a comfortable handgrip and sizeable lens make shooting on the RX10 III an enjoyable experience. The photographic capabilities of the RX10 III are boundless, with a plethora of options to choose from in the menu (including everything from ISO to the file size/ resolution of the image itself). I personally find the numerous customizable buttons to be particularly helpful; I can almost instantaneously swap between a single and burst shot mode when an unanticipated moving object comes into view. The 4 focus modes are also a pleasant added feature, providing me with the freedom to choose between a continuous to a direct manual autofocus (the 2 modes I use most frequently) based on the object being photographed. The video capabilities of the camera, however, are such that they truly set the RX10 III apart from other cameras in its class; they are second to none at this price point. A dedicated movie button makes capturing video footage a speedy and hassle-free process. The 1â sensor is able to flawlessly record in 4K at 30fps, and the HFR (high frame rate) mode allows magical moments to be captured at up to 960fps (I found 1080p at 240fps to be a âsweet spotâ for this mode). The camera is claimed to be âweatherproofedâ; an expedition in Antarctica truly tested this. Sudden changes from 0 to 25° did not cause any immediate wearing to arise. However, after the expedition, I have noticed that small beads of water have accumulated within the lens, leading me to believe that perhaps slightly more improvement on camera weatherproofed section will be better (in comparison to other cameras at this price point); but this is only minor issue as I used camera in extreme expedition condition.Overall, the camera is a pleasure to work with. Its straight-forward yet extensive menu option combined with its superb hardware make the RX10 III one of the best bridge cameras money can buy. I would highly recommend the product.
I have not had the camera long, i must admit i do find it quite overwhelming. I love the feel of the camera. I have made use of the link to the Help guide. This gives you a more in-depth explanation of the camera and how to use it. It is also good that the camera helps with choices of settings

You must go the Sony website and download digiaal version of the manual Help_459027211.pdfThe only major shortcoming is that on some occasions, the automatic focus mechanism would get lost on low or dim light, it would take an out of focus photo and you may have to manual focus it.there is a selector button on the body for selecting the type of focusing mode ie automatic, manual focusing etc, it can be accidentally bumped out of place. The control buttons are not raised, so in a darken room you may need a small LED flashlight to illuminate the back of the camera. I have a small LED light on a neck chain for this purpose
I'm a photographer of long standing. Now in my 80's, I think I've experienced the complete range of cameras from the past. Until now I've been using a DSLR camera body with supplementary lenses - like so many others. Fed up hiking around a lot of heavy gear, I decided to explore using a integrated bridge camera and got myself this Sony DSC-RX10 lll. Firstly, I must say the quality and performance of this camera is absolutely superb. It has an incredible comprehensive approach to picture taking enabling an almost infinite tweaking of the settings and covering most shooting conditions. But, of course, there lies the problem. Given the wide range of choices and settings mixed up with the rather quirky Sony menu system, it can become a steep learning curve. Despite the ... MoreI'm a photographer of long standing. Given the wide range of choices and settings mixed up with the rather quirky Sony menu system, it can become a steep learning curve. Despite the age thingy, I'm applying all the logic, understanding and determination I can muster to keep me going. My fear is, can I learn enough about this camera to make good use of it before it's too late? Meanwhile, thank goodness for the 'AUTO' setting!!!
I bought this camera recently and it can produce some good images. But why do manufacturers never get it right the first time? The lcd is too restricted in its available movement range and should have been side hung ant touch sensitive. Also it cannot be seen in full sun and the viewfinder is not designed for spectacle wearers. The buttons are flat to the body and difficult to find quickly. Some basic controls are buried in the menu. The manual zoom ring has too long a throw and on my example is jerky in mid range. On start up (2 1/2 seconds ) the lens extends and waiting for it can mean missing the shot. The pop up flash works well enough for fill in at close range but at 24mm the hood has to be removed to prevent it throwing a shadow.Eleven frames a second is ... MoreI bought this camera recently and it can produce some good images. There is no provision for restricting the focusing distance which might help prevent the lens from defocussing when shooting BIT'S. It could have been a great camera not just a good one had they consulted a decent photographer at the design stage instead of listening to the bean counters who probably threw all the good features out to save production costs. I like the size, much more like a dslr and it handles reasonably well once the menu access sequence has been learned. Focusing czn be flow it has a tendancy to hunt in low light or low contrast situations.Having said that, I am getting used to it being much slower and less intuitive than my old dslr but wish it could have been made with us photographers in mind.I give it 7 out of 10.
Having developed an interest in wildlife photography I have acquired some high quality cameras and lenses which give good results but are both large and heavy. As I am getting older I needed lighter equipment but I stii needed a long focal length lens i.e 600mm equivalent focal length. There are some cameras which offer this but the drawback is that they have very small sensors and the lenses are not of the highest quality. The Sony RX10 III is the best solution yet available. It has an excellent 1"" sensor coupled with a very high quality Zeiss branded lens with an equivalent focal length range of 24 to 600mm at f2.4 to 4.. Auto focus is acceptably quick and accurate. As it is a complex camera there is a wide range of controls from automatic to customisation of the many control buttons. Fortunately it is possible to set up groups of settings and recall them as needed. One disappointing feature is the lack of a printed manual, only a scanty get-you-start4ed guide. Further instructions can be downloaded from the Sony website but I still found it necessary to buy Alexander S White's Photographers guide to the Sony DSC-RX10III which is most helpful in getting to grips with many facilities available on this camera. As I am really a still photographer I cannot say much about the video capabilities of the camera but from doing a few short video clips they seem to be very good. The camera is not small but much of the bulk and weight is due to the lens - long fast lenses inevitably contain a lot of glass. I can recomend this camera for its versatility being able to cover most photographic needs. If you do not need such a long focal length there are smaller, lighter and cheaper alternatives within the Sony range and elsewhere.
I have only had the RX10m3 for a couple of weeks but I'm already very impressed. It has great build quality and looks and feels like a serious bit of kit.I find the controls fairly intuitive and haven't had the problems that other users have hinted at. If you're reasonably used to complex control systems then this camera won't prove a problem in that regard. The lens is outstanding, even at the 600mm equivalent. I took some of my first shots with the camera of the moon. Great crater definition on the edges and pretty good detail on the fully illuminated areas. Almost as good as I get visually observing through my Televue Renaissance (4") telescope. Had a little difficulty focusing on the vintage aircraft in flight but they are a difficult target for any handheld long reach lens. In summary, so far I couldn't be more pleased. Well done Sony.
