I had purchased a cheaper but nearly identical looking device to this one only to find that while I had saved a few dollars, the result was a disc that was not a true DVD image and was most likely not playable in most standard DVD players. Lesson learned. If you want a device that is easy to use and will produce a disc that will play in your DVD player without jumping through any hoops, this is your device.

I purchased this to put my old VHS tapes onto dvd. Picture quality is incredible. I just unplugged my video cables from my tv and straight into the dvd recorder. Its very self-explanatory and simple to use. Highly recommended!

I trust it will be just fine. My daughter has this and loves it, tells me its very easy to use. Unfortunately, I simply haven't had the time to try to use it.

I was thrilled that this was easy to hook up and use. I give it a 5 star rating with the quality of the DVDs when played on the DVD player, including good sound.....much better than the view of the 8mm cassette film through the camcorder.....and the ease of use, bypassing need for a computer to do this task. I hooked up Sony camcorder to the Sony VRD MC5 using a separate cord I bought ( FireWire Cable 4 Pin to 4 Pin Male to Male iLink DV Cable Firewire 400 IEEE 1394 Cord). I hooked a 4 pin cable connector into each machine, turned the camcorder to play, powered burner on, then one more click, and it worked well. My only learning curve was that I can not do the easy selection of just the one click button for full copy mode, because all of my 8mm cassette films are 2 ... MoreI was thrilled that this was easy to hook up and use. One hour of tape records on the Verbatim DVD+R blank discs I used, so half way in when the disc is full, it stops then you need to keep that spot on tape and have the remainder record to 2nd disc (which I found to work well using the Manual mode instead of full mode......there are only a few steps more to doing this, which I found instructions for in manual). Sony also makes it easy to finalize the disc, with options that display when the eject button is touched. I will certainly be recommendingthis product to other people I know. I am well pleased with this Sony VRD MC5, that I bought used for a good price, and it is still great!
It wasn't mentioned that the recorder has different image qualities for extending recording times. The image quality suffers but is still presentable. The recorder is easy to set up and use right out of the box. My wife loves it, it was a gift for her. Having all the accessories and manual come with it was even better.
As usual Sony made another fine quality product. This MC5 model makes very clear copies from my Canon HD camcorder. The directions were clear. Make sure to have a high quality DVD disc!
Excellent piece of equipment to create movies from a Sony camcorder. You must have the proper cable that fit your video camera. The SD slots are used only to create picture slide shows. They will not read movie data. Must stream data from camera to DVD recorder via cables or USB. I Still think this is a great product. You can use your home computer to do the same thing, but that requires a lot of converting files. You can also download Sony Play Memories Software onto your computer or laptop, and make movies from your camcorder. I find the DVD Recorder to be my first choice.
This unit is spectacular to archive my old movie collection. It is very easy to setup and intuitive interface recording options. This is probably one of the best Sony products I have owned in 40yrs. The DVD tray is heavy plastic compared to the DVD trays in a PC. Quality Unit.
This item is really a great tool for making a quick DVD of your old VHS Tapes. Probably more it can do....but just to capture the old VHS Tape to DVD format pretty easy,
the best way to transfer your analog tapes to dvd. I tried some of the converters you plug into your computer and they both were bad. Bad picture quality and unstable image. I tried a 40.00 dollar one and a 70.00 dollar one from best buy. This sony makes an exact copy of your tape. there are some little tricks to learn while using it. Like not all blank media acts the same in it. If you stop the recording about every 30 min and restart that works best and I have not had any dics fail since learning that little trick.
