This is a great lens for Sony mirrorless cameras from the a6400 upwards. For the price (when compared to full frame examples) it is much cheaper, lighter & smaller. However, a x5 zoom range means that when compared to the kit zoom lens it is much more expensive, heavier & larger - so it depends on your needs & expectations. When it works it takes great pictures. However, mine quit working within 1 year. It will fail to work intermittently; does not focus in AF or manual mode and sometimes gives an error that the lens is not recognized. The standard 16-50mm works fine, so it is not the camera (Alpha 6400). Cleaning the lens contacts did not make a difference. It does tend to come back after resting for a few hours, but you never know when it will die again.Luckily it is still under warranty so it is going back to Sony, but it has caused me to miss a number of great shots.

I've owned this lens for a while now and have used it on my A6400 in all weather and light conditions. Yes, it is lightweight compared to a full frame lens but if you are looking for a zoom that gives you sharp photos above 250mm this is not it. The focus is not awful, just a touch soft. I am able to correct in software (mostly use Paintshop Photo Pro). My other complaint is the reach. I had a Nikon 5600 and used a Tamron 16-300mm F/3.5-6.3 as my walk around lens and when I occasionally shoot the moon, it filled more of the frame then this 350 does. Though to be fair the Tamron was also soft when it was close to 300mm. One other negative is the lack of a tripod foot. First off, delivery was very prompt. This is the 1st 'G' lens i've used and the results were stunning. I recently purchased a 5 yr old a6000 that was still brand-new from a relative that really needed an all-in-one point-n-shoot. The 2 'kit' lenses were good but this 70-350mm 'G' lens is a huge step up in image quality. Like the camera, this lens is in keeping with the smaller mirrorless camera theme. Birding with this new lens is very rewarding and fun.

After building up a decent lineup of lenses (11-22, 22, 18-150, the sigma trio) and even upgrading to the M6 mk ii, I really enjoyed my kit and took a lot of nice photos.But now that I caught the bug and really enjoy this hobby, I found myself wanting more and more reach for wildlife, sports and even for landscape and street photography. I also noticed that most of my photos were at the longer end. I went from taking more wide angle pictures, to better subject isolation and composition, as well as really appreciating the background compression longer focal lengths create. As a result, my 150mm max focal length was starting to show its limits. I also started to be disappointed with how soft the photos were compared to my sigma 56 f1.4.So I investigated for a while the various options for telephoto lenses, with non-negotiable criterias for my use case: price, portability and IQ. Unfortunately the choice for the ef-m mount just doesn't exist, and won't since Canon has now killed this very convenient and promising system. Adapting EF glass is impractical and defeats the purpose of owning and carrying a small compact apsc setup. I quickly realised I didn't want to carry my sigma EF 18-35 f1.8 once I got the sigma ef-m 16 f1.4. So adapting either the heavy and bulky sigma 100-400 or 150-600 was a no go.I therefore found myself realising I would need to look at other bodies and good lenses that would match them: after watching a lot of content, I landed on either going- Canon RF with the R10 + the excellent compact and light RF 100-400- or Sony with the a6400 (or ZV-e10) + this amazing 70-350After watching one of my favourite wildlife bird photographer notice some AF issues with the R7 and R10, and also knowing that I really wanted the sigma 18-50 f2.8 as my main mid-range lens, which only exists for the E-mount; I was already leaning Sony. Then Canon announced recently they were not going to let 3rd party lens manufacturers develop affordable good quality lenses for the RF mount. This sealed the deal for me.So here I am 3 years later, full circle. I would have saved myself quite a bit of money and frustration by getting that A6400 from the very beginning.My conclusion for any enthusiast getting into this hobby: it's ALL about the lenses ! Ignore any fanboy/partisan brand debate except for the reliability of AF (which is really important indeed). Ignore any road map, rumours of lens release: only trust the ones already available on the market for your needs.And if your budget is under £1k and you want an excellent portable APS-C telephoto, there is essentially no competition with this 70-350. It's the best in the market ! And since it's an E-mount, it will mount perfectly on a full frame body in the future if I feel the need to. I'm very much an amateur; I don't think I can really utilize a quarter of the capabilities of the Sony a6400 camera I purchased from Best Buy. But this lens, with it's Optical Steady Shot, is rather incredible. When shooting handheld at maximum zoom you can't see any shake. And you end up with beautiful pictures that with the 26 megapixels in the camera you can crop them and zoom in even more.If money were no object I'd give it five stars but obviously that's not the case. And remember, this is a fairly big and heavy lens for an amateur to handle on the little Sony camera bodies. You might want to try it out a bit before springing for this lens. But for me, I like to get in tight and zoom in so I'll put up with that.

Unfortunately it doesn't work with the A6000, you need a more advanced camera version - but it's easy to carry this function out on the camera itself.About Zoom ranges and settings: With this lens installed, you now have access to two levels of zoom - the range provided by the lens itself, and an extra zoom scale provided by the camera. You'll find that a previously unavailable "Zoom" menu option will come to life. This is in the Settings menu (the first tab), on the 5th screen. You'll see a scale on screen - press the right-arrow key and the camera will multiply the lens' zoom by certain amounts and you can see the effects on the camera monitor. This is explained from page 49 of the Sony Alpha 6000 manual, and on page 52 there's a table showing how the zoom scale - used in combination with the zoom of the lens - changes according to the selected Image Size.So you have several levels of zoom depending on Image Size and required quality. I decided to stick to the medium - Clearimage - setting (see the Custom menu, screen 3), with the Zoom function assigned to the right-arrow key for easy access, and Image Size assigned to another button so I can change it if required. (There are articles and videos on "Clear Image Zoom" and other settings on the internet)Quality: I was amazed at the clear and crisp results - on day one, a robin perched on a wall in the local park came out really clear and sharp, and there was plenty of background blur ('bokeh'), which the lens produces almost automatically. On day two, I got some lovely clear shots of a seal on the opposite side of a river bank. I later measured the distance on a map and found it was 50 metres - very satisfying!
I bought this to complete my set of lenses and it is magnificent at what it does, but it is definitely a long range lens even at the lowest 70 mm setting (105mm with APC-S). Based on what I've shot in the last 2 months, I find I go back to my next lower lens more often because i want more background/landscape. I think it will be great for birds and wildlife around 20-100 yards away when i have more opportunities. I don't think i will personally use this enough now, but good to have when i need it. I am not a professional, but do it for a hobby.
