I never had the first version so I can't speak to the differences but this version is fantastic. A lot lighter than I was expecting it would be, images are very sharp, rings are all smooth, focus is super fast, the only weird thing is the way it zooms. Zoomed out to 16mm actually extends the lens and zoomed in to 35mm retracts the lens. Otherwise, zero complaints form me.

I have several Sony G lenses, which I think are great lenses. This is my first G Master, and there is a marked difference in image quality. It is indeed pricey, but it does mot disappoint. Be careful, though, with the lens shade. It has a small button which must be pressed before turning it to remove it from the front of the lens. This is not the case with my G lenses.

I waited for the second gen of this lens and the wait was worth it. While it might not be a lens worth upgrading from the first generation if you had it, this lens is right in line with the benefits of many other second generation Sony lenses. Lighter, smaller, sharper (albeit minimal and doesn't matter in most cases). Paired with the A7cR it's a great pairing. Can punch it up with APS-c mode to 24-52mm or just crop in post. It is fairly nicely balanced and with the bigger grip size installed it's fairly easy to grip. The weight ends up balanced just behind the aperture ring on the lens. A bigger body that weighs more it'll be balanced nicely.Image quality is great. Go watch YouTube reviews if you want to get into the fine nuances of it but unless you're blowing ... I'm not a pro, but I bought this lens to take pictures of the staircases that I build. In addition, I've dabbled in astrophotography, and landscape. I chose it because of it's low optical distortion for the architectural nature of the pictures that I take for my business. Being that it was a fairly fast lens, I also tried it out for astro and found that it had no CA even wide open. Landscape does very well too although, there is an ever so slight amount of vignetting in the corners. Check out my pictures to see what I'm talking about.

This is my first wide angle zoom lens, I own a new 24-70 gm ii but sometimes I felt that I need to have a little bit wider lens.Exciting to walk around NYC and get some nice landscape and architecture pictures.If you want to take your photography in a different level, I believe this lens would be a great investment.
This was literally the lens that made me want to switch to Sony mirrorless from Nikon DSLR. I love the focal range and the fact that it has 82mm which is becoming a more common filter thread that I have some nice filters for. I came from the 14-24 bulbous lens days and I got tired of hogging around custom 150mm filters.What was surprising also is how much lighter the lens actually is than I anticipated. If you pair this with a 24-70 or 28-75 it would be an incredible landscape combo. Normally when I go out to shoot landscapes I carry the 16-35 GM, 24-70 GM and voigtlander 21 1.4 nokton which works really great. The image quality is nothing short of awesome. I am a huge prime shooter but it is hard to deny the versatility of a zoom on the ultra wide end especially. ... Also the zoom range from 17-28 felt more restrictive. The build quality on this GM lens is absolutely stellar especially with the need of weather sealing. Sure it's not cheap but what it offers is really hard to beat. For those that do not want to spend a lot the tamron 17-28 is pretty much only other wide zoom to get if you want to use regular filters.

The buildings in the background did show signs of distortion, but I don't blame the lens. It was my angle. For the people on the edges, the lens correction either fixed it, or in several cases, I simply cropped them out because they were not the main subject. When necessary, I made a perspective correction to fix the buildings.The images were sharp to my eye. I do not focus too much on bokeh, but when I did shoot close to wide open, I did notice on several images that the colors in the background were a little blotchy. That may be due to the lighting (overcast afternoon in the Fall), so I'll have to give this lens a second test on a sunny day.Culling through my images, I found that the majority of the images I deemed worthy of processing were the ones shot with the 16-35 lens.I've always stayed away from the 16-35 lens for demonstrations and other public events because shooting wide does create issues with people, but I am very much inclined to keep this lens in my permanent kit.
