I have compared it with the sony 16-34 f4 and the sigma 14-24 f2.8 DG DN (the new one).With the adapter AF worked well so i did my usual tests shots. Remember, no lens profile applied because i work with a Nikon body through an adapter. With my great surprise the 16-35 GM at f4 has more vignetting and field curvature than the 16-35 f4 at 4. Nothing that could not be corrected but...in addition my sample was slightly decentered. For a 2K lens...i decided it was not acceptable and i returned it. Compared with the sigma and the sigma has much less field curvature and vignetting than the Sony GM and it's centered. And it's ... Disclaimer: I upgraded from a Nikon D3300 with a decent 35mm Nikkor lens to the Sony a7III with this lens. On top of that, throw in the optical quality of arguably the best wide angle zoom of all time, and what you have is seemingly a miracle of a lens for which a $2200 price tag starts to seem reasonable.The build quality, while it is a plastic shell, seems very good and the plastic itself feels quite premium. The GM is also noted for having much better performance at 35mm (and just better across the entire zoom range really), which is an often used focal length for me, and all those reasons were more than enough to push over the edge to get the GM.I will say though that if you are considering only using this lens for landscapes in decent light, then the f/4 version may be a better fit for you. But if you want more versatility in a much more usable 35mm, the ability to do astrophotography/night landscapes, and a shallower depth of field that can make the GM more useful in more situations, then consider the GM, which actually only weighs 160g more

This is an amazing lens for landscape/environmental portrait photography. I use it on hikes taking pictures of mountains and landscape and also portraits of the wife and friends without having to switch to another lens.I ve had the Sony 16-35 F4 multiple times and the new Tamron 17-28 f2.8 and honestly despite what reviews say this GM lens is significantly sharper than the Tamron. It is sharper than my GM primes even. It's impressive.The weight and size are not an issue, yes it is much bigger than other lenses but is seems well balanced and is still lighter than older DSLR lenses. Definitely my favorite lens.

When you’re on the North Fork it would be well worth your time to take a sail with Captain Liz on Layla Sailing.And dad was the photographer so where did he go for a lens. This was the lens that got me interested to switch to sony from nikon as nikon did not have a 16-35 2.8. That focal range is so versatile and useful for landscape and even some event photography as there are many times where there is ls limited range to move back to forward. Thankfully Sony has been increasing their professional lens optics line up available for their cameras with their G series and Sigma now offering some great options too.This was one of the reasons I never considered Sony before, because of the limited options for quality lenses that have higher end features like weather sealing and improved construction.My only two points are firstly, the lens does not change focal length internally but still relies on extending the barrel unlike the canon 16-35mm equivalent, which is a shame and could result in increased internal dust over time. The lens is well built and so I'm sure properly sealed for dust, it's just not ideal to be drawing air in and out. I you were to use this lens on a gimbal this is still something to note since as the lens extends with changes in focal length it may require rebalancing accordingly.The second thing I noticed is this is actually a 35-16mm lens where as you extend the barrel your focal length gets shorter/wider. Usually lenses start off wide and then 'zoom' in to their longest focal length. This lens starts, fully compressed, at 35mm. This is certainly not a deal breaker but another thing to be aware of just to get used to since its slightly strange to put the focal range backwards but again I suppose this must be related to its optical elements design construction.Overall very pleased with this lens.

About to be on my third one of these so I suggest getting the protection plan for as long as possible.I think my first one lasted a little over 2 years because my protection plan expired but the second one not nearly as long. I purchased it in April and now as of December the motor to focus it is dead on the new one too.Worst part is you can't even manual focus either since it's focus by wire, once the motor dies you have a $2300 paper weight.Other than that it's a great lens lol.
I'm a landscape photographer who believes that less is more. Trudging around with photo gear on your back can get very tiring. I only wanted 3 total lenses to pursue my hobby. If you only take 3, they need to be hand picked. I use this lens more than the other 2 combined. It offers beautiful bokeh, great sun flares and will even do amazing Astros if opened to f2.8. I absolutely love this lens.
