When combined with the A1, the focus remains locked on the bird even when it flies through tree branches! After getting bludgeoned by corporate reviews over the years (3-met expectations), this gets a rare 5 star rating from me for a piece Sony should have included with their $$$ lens. Well made in the USA including the small T-style hex wrench included with the unit. I just wish it had the hole/opening near the foot side like they do for the 200-600 model as I usually curl my finger around it when carrying the lens using the foot so I feel more secure.

I used the micro focus chart as my target to see if the lens would produce a sharp image. I was extremely well impressed with the sharpness of the image at f/2.8. When I stopped down to f/4 then f/5.6 and f/8 the sharpness of the image was awesome in the center of the chart and all that changed from one f/stop to the next was the depth of field. In the past two weeks I’ve put the new system through quite an extensive field trial and it has performed extremely well both with and without the Sony 1.4x tele-converter. The lens is easy to handle. It is very responsive. Focus is nearly instantaneous and very accurate. It’s an expensive piece of equipment but I believe it is well worth the price.

Exceeded expectations in every way
29 April 2022

I bought this lens right before leaving for a 7-day photo workshop in Botswana. I am 5' 3 and was able to hand hold the lens on my A1 body with a battery pack when I needed more flexibility to get the best shot. I found the lens easily fit in my Think Tank backpack along with one other lens and 2 camera bodies. Nearly all of my photos were tack sharp and the combination of this lens with the A1 body was all I needed. I brought an extender but never needed it. I really debated between the 400 and 600 and if you have the A1 body, I think you'll be happy with the 400 - even for birding and higher ISOs needed for low light.

Fantastic Lens, Seamless Rental Process
25 August 2022

I rented this lens for the Chicago Air and Water show. It had no issues tracking focus on the fast-moving planes. It was a little rough handholding this beast during the whole air show, but it was manageable with the short breaks in between demonstrations. The rental process was seamless, as usual with LensRentals. The only caveat with this particular lens is that you have to either provide your own insurance protection plan or choose the LensCap+ insurance option. No insurance and the LensCap insurance are not allowed - this was not clarified when I first select the insurance plan.

Good but not perfect
6 July 2020

It functions as it should and is a solid, high-quality piece of equipment. There are just two things that keep it from being perfect. One is that it's longer than it needs to be (at least using an A7R IV) and a little heavier than it would need to be. According to my scale it's a few grams heavier than the stock foot. When trying to fly or hike with a big lens, every bit of weight matters. More importantly, it is noticeably more uncomfortable to carry the lens by this lens foot compared to the stock foot. It's just the shape of the foot and the sharper edges. Those two things aside, I recommend it.

Light and fast, with incredible image quality

I shoot wildlife primarily, including deer bucks in rut and birds-in-flight. I shoot handheld 99.9% of the time and routinely use my FE 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters, with both an a9 and an a7RIII body. This lens totally rocks, in every respect. On the a9, with the FE 2.0x teleconverter, shooting flying ring-billed gulls is a piece of cake, using Wide Lock-on AF against a mostly blue sky. 10 out of 10 were tack-sharp. With the a7RIII, that falls to around 6 out of 10. Ive only had my lens a few days, so I havent shot any really fast flying birds, like diving ducks, but Im confident that this lens, on the a9, with either teleconverter, will give great results.Shooting bucks chasing doe through the woods is another challenging AF situation where this lens shines on ... MoreI shoot wildlife primarily, including deer bucks in rut and birds-in-flight. Within 1-hour of shooting my first shots with this lens, I got a big white-tail buck, running after a doe at full speed, amongst all kinds of trees and brush. The resulting image was sharp and told a great story.Being able to shoot at f/2.8 makes a huge difference when shooting before and after sunrise. My first day of shooting, I got a big white-tail buck, handheld, at ISO 40000, f/2.8, 1/500-sec. Dont laugh until you see the picture, which turned out quite nicely.Image quality is through the roof. Ill include a picture of a fox squirrel, at a lower ISO, so you can see the fur and eye detail possible with this lens on the a7RIII. Astounding is all I can say. Darn, could only upload two-images. Believe, the detail is sharp.I carry two bodies at all time. One with this lens mounted and the other with my FE 100-400mm GM OSS. I have my wide zooms in a backpack. I hand hold everything except long-exposure. Weight is a huge factor, not just in bearing the load for hours, but hold the lens steady. With the lightness of this lens, the OSS and IBIS, this lens is a breeze to handhold. Wildlife photographers that are not already handholding should try it. Youll get way more shots that youve been missing while futzing with your tripod.Nothing more to add. Worth every penny. Blows away my old EF 500/f4 III rig.

Not the best on the 600mm. Got rid of it.
18 April 2023

The quick-release strap mount is way too far forward on this foot for a good balance with the 600mm GM.Also, the notch cut out of the dovetail around the mounting screws isn't ideal. With the balance point so far back on the 600mm with a gripped body and a teleconverter, this is exactly where you want to be clamping. The design of a FlexShooter head means its totally unusable with that cut-out, and other heads require careful clamping. In the end, I sold it and got the RRS foot instead. It has the quick-release strap socket in the right place, and the dovetail is continuous to the back of the foot. Problem solved. This is a rare miss for Kirk.

Sharpest, fastest super-telephoto I’ve ever used

I was sure I’d set myself up for disappointment after spending so much for this lens. Had I lost my mind to GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome)? How could any experience justify sinking this much into one piece of gear? But, after a weekend shooting wildlife with the Sony FE 400mm f2.8 GM OSS (plus the 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters) on the a7rIII, I simply can’t wait to take it out again. Even familiar creatures that I’ve shot many times before take on a new, well, personality may be the word. There’s a combination of detail, accuracy, color (yes, color!) and dynamic range (that too!) that breathe new life into every shot.QUESTIONS? Doubtless like other new owners of the Sony 400mm GM, I’m now wondering if I should have waited a bit longer and blown my bucket list ... MoreI was sure I’d set myself up for disappointment after spending so much for this lens. Doubtless like other new owners of the Sony 400mm GM, I’m now wondering if I should have waited a bit longer and blown my bucket list budget on the just-announced Sony 600mm r4 GM instead. But honestly, I think not...AND HERE’S WHY. The 400mm base length is wonderfully flexible, and Sony’s excellent teleconverters can take it to 560mm f4 or even 800mm f5.6 at little sacrifice in sharpness or dynamic range. Plus, if I use this 400mm prime with the forthcoming a7r IV, I can switch to “cropped-sensor mode” for an additional 1.5x effective length at an industry-standard 26mp.This brings the extended length of this 400mm GM up to 1200mm—and you can’t shorten the 600mm!So, how can I possibly recommend this obscenely expensive lens? With all my heart. Dollar for dollar, I doubt you’ll find a better wildlife telephoto anywhere, at any price, from any other manufacturer. And to my mentor, Mark, who egged me on to buy this uber-glass, I can only say—thank you a thousand and one times, sir. You were right. Gear is very often overrated, but a few fantastic items are honestly the price of reaching the next level. Among that fabulous few, I rank the Sony 400mm f2.8 GM number one.

Top notch
21 December 2021

Top notch lens. The linear motors provide very fast target acquisition and the depth of field makes the subjects pop. I chose this over the 600mm f4 for pure versatility. Add a teleconverter and you have a 600mm f4 with little to no compromise. Tracking is solid and the 2.8 opens up evening and early morning opportunities that did?t exist for me before. If you can afford it, it?s worth the money.
