I took a few short portraits of people as well inside and with ample light, it's just as good as the more expensive lenses out there.You do not have auto stablization in this lens, but that is fine, I rather give that up and lighten my load in carry. Anyway, the camera can more than make up for it.

The price is reasonable comparing to its older brother Sony FE24-105mmF/4 G OSS.The negative of this lens is F/4. It can be an issue for most people when facing low light situation, but you can use a flash light for such situation. You can pair it with a Sony FE 20mm F/1.8 G or Sony FE35mm F/1.8. They can be great companion when you needed for low light.Bottom line, this is a one-lens solution for Hybrid Shooter that gives great range for both still and video subjects on any given day. When it is mounting on A7c body they can become a perfect combination for traveling kit.

So, I should say up front I purchased this lens to replace my 24-105 f/4. The 24-105 has been a terrific lens, which I've used for many types of photography and even a little video. My primary issue has been I've often wished it had a little wider focal length, particularly when travelling. It seems 20mm vs 24mm provides more opportunity for capturing an image than what I originally thought, and frequently I've had to swap the 24-105 with the 16-35 to get the image I wanted, with most of those seeming to require something between 18mm and 22mm. That's been my experience - yours may be different. Do I miss the additional 30mm of the telephoto end? Sometimes, but another unexpected attribute of the 20-70 essentially neutralizes this as well. So much so that when I crop a 70mm image on the new lens to equal 100-105mm of the old lens, the detail is indistinguishable between the two, with the 70mm crop often still having more detail. I was quite surprised to see this but thought I should mention it for those having the same concerns I had when considering the 20-70. It's certainly lighter than the 24-105, handling quite easily, and is not front heavy at all when mounted on camera. I think the main area where the 24-105 outperforms the 20-70 mis when trying to compress backgrounds if taking portraits. I'm not a portrait guy but have found some of this can be offset with the 20-70 by adding distance between the subject and background. The bokeh is actually quite nice. Not cinematic like a true portrait lens, but certainly good enough that I'd not shy away from taking portraits if this is what I had available to use. There is quite allot of barrel distortion and vignetting, particularly at 20mm and f/4. At 70mm there is a slight pin cushion but no vignetting. Lightroom does not yet have a lens profile for this lens, but using the 24-240 seems to eliminate the majority of the distortion at 20mm and all the pin cushion at 70mm. To eliminate all of the distortion at 20mm, the 28mm f/2 ultra profile seems to work best. So, in conclusion I'm very impressed and pleased with the 20-70mm f/4. It renders beautiful images, sharp (even at f/4) with terrific contrast and color, while allowing a lightweight and easy to handle kit. It will definitely be my primary travel, landscape and general-purpose lens.

You’ve spent at least $2000, in some cases much more, on a good Sony full frame camera with a ‘kit’ interchangeable lens. You’ve watched all the tutorial videos. You’ve been told gear doesn’t matter, it’s about subject, composition, and lighting, and you learn to get it mostly right and… your pictures are good. Not great. Better than your cell phone, but not as much as you would hope for. What’s going on? Gear matters. It is your kit lens holding you back. Laws of physics are laws of physics, and the kit lens just isn’t as optically competent as the more expensive lenses. But that’s okay, Sony has a wide, wide range of choices.Anyone that doubted that Sony offers choice for all levels of photographers and budget, must look at the new (2023) Sony - FE 20-70mm F4 G Full Frame Standard Zoom Lens for E-mount Cameras listing at $1099.99. That’s a mouthful. It joins a family of 50 full frame E-mount lenses (at my last counting). But more critical to this buying decision, there are no less than 5 full frame Sony zoom lenses covering a similar focal length range for a ‘standard’ zoom starting with that $399.99 kit zoom lens (28-70mm F3.5 to 5.6) to this G class lens for $1099.99 (20-70mm F4) and then to the top of the line G Master class, $2,299.99 (24-70 mm F2.8).Bottom line. Cost wise it’s closer to the kit lens, performance and build quality wise, shockingly close to the G Master.I actually own the G Master but was interested in something I could take traveling or mount for vlogging. The question was, would the picture quality suffer to the point it wasn’t worth leaving the G master behind, or would I feel comfortable with F4 G?Short answer is I was shocked how comparable it was to the lens that cost $1200 more. I couldn’t tell the difference in side-by-side pictures taken at the same time, except when I pushed the aperture to below F4 and low light. If I pixel peeped to the extreme sometimes, I could rationalize the G-Master, but I never do this under any actual use conditions. But in a blind taste test for everyday use, I suspect I would not be able to tell the difference. It seems to focus as blindingly fast. It does NOT focus as close though, so if you REALLY want more macro, the G Master wins.When comparing pictures, almost any decent camera can take a good picture for a computer screen, but if you want actual prints, this will support you. I say that, because I am including a few pics for you to review, but they don’t show the full capability of the lens. I took some at low light (sunset) to push the F4 to its limits as well as in a greenhouse during the day, and a day water shot. All shots were handheld, iso 100-200, and I will list the relevant setting details. Note, though I didn’t push the shutter speed low, I noted in some cases it was as slow as 1/50th with no loss of sharpness. Also, in one of the sunset pics at 70mm you will note a small spec in the middle, that was a bird flying through the frame. The camera focuses on it, and I cropped down by 1000%, yes 1000% to do some extreme pixel peeping and was surprised to make out individual feathers. Also, on the day bay shot I cut the aperture to get the ‘starburst’ effect for those that like to see that kind of thing.One last thing, for the savvy budget sharper you might want to compare this to the Tamron standard zoom which is F2.8 and even less expensive. If you can, compare them side by side. I did own the Tamron, it WAS good, but why I sold it was the focus was not as fast (in my hands), and the build quality felt cheaper plus it lacked some on lens features that I like. The Sony quality won me over.So, who is this lens for? The quality driven but budget minded photographer in almost all categories, traveling, portrait, vlogger, but the 70 mm may not be for sports enthusiasts that go more for greater than 200mm. In particular, the lower than normal 20 mm range makes it very appealing to landscape/travel photographers.

When I travel, I will typically throw my camera in a backpack along with other things. The lens is small and light enough in its close position that it can easily be carried anywhere. When Sony built this lens, they did not sacrifice on built quality but still managed to make it feel durable.If you could only carry one lens for travel photography, I would make it this one. It is great for wide angle landscapes, medium portraits, and some close-range telephoto at 70mm. The best part is that it is inexpensive for the high quality of the lens. I believe this would also be a great lens for anyone starting out in photography who needs a great all around lens.

I am happy to say that in my short time of owning this lens, I have been very satisfied with the results, corner to corner, in every scenario I have thrown at it so far. These days, I am mainly a Real Estate photo and video shooter, so having that 20mm extra wide angle is imperative for my work. Back to the weight for a second… This lens has become my go-to lens for my Real Estate gimbal work. It’s just SO versatile being able to go from 20 to 70mm on a gimbal. Just be sure to balance your gimbal properly by having the telephoto in the middle of the zoom range for optimal results. I use an FX3 for video and don’t feel the need to change the lens at all while I shoot homes. The same can be said for Real Estate still photos. I switch this lens in-between my FX3 and A7III and use it exclusively for both photo and video at this point. Now I only wish I had two of them so I would never have to switch them out and chance introducing dust onto my sensor while on the job.Besides Real Estate work, I got a chance to use this at my daughters birthday party and really, really loved the colors it produced. It is vivid, produces great contrast, really nice bokeh (more later), and the skin tones are spot on. Being an f/4 lens is absolutely no big deal to me. I don’t plan on using this lens at concerts or very much at all in low light scenarios, so it is again, perfect for what I use it for. I can even get some beautiful bokeh when shooting wide open at f/4 throughout the entire zoom range. That said, the closer you are to the subject being shot, the better the bokeh, which is true for most any lens. The sharpness is excellent all across the entire frame in my tests with minimal distortion that can easily be fixed with one click in Lightroom if it doesn’t automatically do it for you. I also haven’t really noticed any chromatic aberration or color fringing, which makes this even more valuable. Edges of tree branches and straight lines seem to be really controlled. The auto focus is super fast and always seems to find what I am wanting in focus. This is the reason I choose native Sony lenses when possible. All in all, this lens is perfect for my use and I couldn’t be happier.The build quality is also excellent for being such a light lens. It feels solid and clicks onto my cameras with authority. Once mounted, it feels right at home on any of my full frame Alpha cameras. The focus and zoom rings are both smooth and buttery. The aperture dial can be locked, or unlocked allowing you to freely set the aperture while shooting video. A very nice feature that I wish all lenses would include as standard. As an added bonus, this lens has two customizable buttons that are conveniently placed for both portrait and landscape orientation. I use mine for eye auto focus. Awesome!While I am not a vlogger by trade, I do sometimes triple tap my gimbal trigger and put the camera on myself. Performance and eye focus is spot on and that is what I expected. If you are a vlogger in need of a lightweight and incredibly awesome sharp lens, I would say look no further than the Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G lens.Travel. Another thing I can HIGHLY recommend this lens for. Remember the weight and size. Perfect. When can I book my next visit to Italy?!If I could complain about anything (which I can’t) it’s that it takes 72mm filters and the ONLY reason that is a complaint is because I have a LOT of filters, but not a single 72!In conclusion, and as stated before, this lens has changed my mind about using a telephoto lens. Up until the release of this lens, I have primarily shot with prime lenses, but those days are over. I can wholeheartedly recommend this lens to anyone using Sony mirrorless cameras. It’s extremely versatile, maybe a tad misunderstood, but definitely sits in its own category and dominates while doing so.Get one!
This has been a terrific lens so far. It replaces my 24-105 f4, which I actually think is a terrific travel lens. Compared to the 24-105, the 20-70 is smaller, lighter, sharper, and also seems to resolve with greater contrast and color. These last 2 are minor differences, but measurable. Overall, I'm quite happy with it and plan to use it extensively. By the way, it's a terrific lens for both video and stills. When shooting RAW, there is quite allot of distortion at 20mm and only minor at 70mm. Lightroom doesn't have a lens profile yet, but I find the FE 24-240 profile to do a very respectable job so far. With a lens profile correction this lens is very useful for wide angle shooting, and there is enough detail and sharpness to allow considerable cropping at 70mm ... The lens feels substantial, and the lettering on the lens body is razor sharp, easy to read. It simply looks magnificent.It is ready to use straight out of the box. I have the Sony ZV-E10 camera, and together they form a perfect union. After mounting the lens, I was ready to begin shooting. I am a pet parent, so of course I started off taking several shots of the dog and cats. This included both still shots and video. I heard the image stabilization feature was outstanding, so I filmed them on the move as well. And of course I tested out the zoom mode many, many times over the course of the next few days. Later on in the evening I took several shots of the crescent moon, but due to the haziness of the atmosphere lately, there was no real point in trying to get a crystal clear shot. The results were still pretty good however.One of the great features of the lens is that it can be used in both Auto mode, and Manual. I played around a lot with the lens in Auto mode, but was anxious and excited to see how well it performed in the Manual mode. One thing I want to mention is that the lens is easy to learn. You can control most of the settings you need to access right on the lens itself. This saves a lot of time having to use the camera settings feature. Just thought I would throw that in there.It's one thing to see the photos and videos through the view-finder. Its totally different to see the finished product once it is downloaded. Having spent several days taking tons of photos and videos, I was ready to see what the lens was actually capable of. I took photos and videos using almost every configuration possible, under as many different situations as possible. The time for truth had come.As I viewed the several hundred photos and videos, I was amazed at the "corner-to-corner" sharpness, at virtually every focal length. I was impressed at how close I was able to get to my subject as I used both the lens zoom-in, and the camera's zoom-in. The distinction between my subjects and the background was remarkable. In video mode, I was stunned at the lack of noise as I zoomed in and out. There was ZERO noise. I have another lens in which the noise is wholly distracting. Great job, Sony!As I watched videos in which I was walking, even over uneven ground, I was surprised at how well the image stabilization worked. There was absolutely none of the distracting shaking you often see in movement shots.So, my take-away? The Sony FE 20-70mm F4 G zoom lens is the perfect all around lens. It's fairly light, easy to use, and the quality of shots is SUPERB! Seriously, what more can anyone ask for? If you are looking for a lens that can deliver professional grade results, is affordable, and can be used in almost all shooting conditions, this is the one you need.I will happily recommend this lens to all my friends and associates who share my love of vlogging and photography!

Tamron looks less distorted at 20mm even after applying the best corrections I could master to Sony.Finally, an advice for those who want to use this lens with an adapter on Nikon bodies -- don't! I tested it with the latest Megadap and though everything works, including aperture ring, the focusing is flaky at 20mm -- it often refuses to focus in low contrast conditions and at infinity. In comparison Tamron has no problems at all. Also worth noting, Sony mounts on adapter easily, Tamron is very tight.
