Hopefully it's weather resistance is still maintained.

None of my older Sony lenses, including the original 24-70 GM or even the older and much cheaper Sony 16-35 f/4 Zeiss had any dust inside. The new GM 2 is vacuuming the air like crazy. I shoot at apertures closer to f/8-f/9 (I shoot high-end interior design and architecture), and that dust can be noticeable in some of the photographs, which is unforgivable for a lens, which as Sony claims itself, updated dust and moisture resistant design provides extra reliability for outdoor use in challenging ... MoreI really enjoyed the lens for the first 3-6 months. Well, I mostly use the lens indoors, and it still got crazy amount of dust inside. And it affected not only the front element, but several elements behind it, so getting it clean won't be a cheap thing to do, which basically adds to its already high cost (it will also affect its resale value if you don't get it professionally cleaned before selling it). Again, the 1st generation was on another level in that regard.

This is a fantastic lens. I sold my first Sony Fe 24-70mm f/2.8 GM because it was simply to big and heavy and did not outperform my beloved prime lenses. However, traveling around the world and carrying around multiple primes got tiresome. I decided to buy this marvel and keep my primes for my Milky Way night sky photography.I have not regretted this decision.-This lens is lighter and smaller than the predecessor.-Very well build, no play of focus and zoom rings and no wobble of extended zoom tube.-Loaded with useful functions that can be programed according to ones need.-I tested the lens for chromatic aberrations but was not able to see any.-The lens is sharp, really sharp, at any aperture and focal lens and to my perception, sharp into the far ... MoreThis is a fantastic lens. I always will have my favorite 21mm prime lens with me but as mentioned, I don't have to carry all the other primes in addition, anymore.I highly recommend this marvel. Bravo Sony!

Incredible performance at infinity...simply the best 24-70 2.8 for Sony.
1 March 2023

I got the chance to test out this lens versus the famous Sigma 24-70 2.8 DG DN on my a7rV. Shot side by side with the same scene, same settings, focused in same areas the GM II was consistently doing better than the sigma. It was especially noticeable when shooting wide open. The GM II was displaying better micro contrast, resolving better than the sigma in the center and corners. This was more noticable when shooting distant objects, focused at infinity which I often do for landscapes or at hyperfocal.Colors wise the sony render more on neutral side where the sigma is more on warmer side. Is the GM II 2x better than the sigma for the price? That's for you to decide. Is the GM II 2x better than the sigma for the price? That's for you to decide. Maybe not but overall what you are paying for here is the AF/ergonimics/size/weight and great optics. To me the sigma has annoyed me the past with missing focus during critical moments during events which caused me having to reshoot but missing the better moment. Also please take into consideration sample variation because I had to go through TWO copies of the GM II to get this excellent one which is NOT FUN. Copy variation plagues the 24-70 zoom lenses in particular as they are difficult to design and have different tolerances. I was not happy with my two previous copies as they were softer on the left side of the frame even stopped down at most FL which was not OK. I had the same experience when I got my sony 12-24 GM lens. I really wish this wasn't the same case in 2023 but here we are.Still highly recommend this lens if you can afford it and want the best AF especially.

Magic

I have owned this lens for only about five days. It is the most expensive lens I have ever purchased by many magnitudes, and I am using it on the most expensive camera I have ever purchased (the Sony A7 IV purchased from BB). That said, my impression after four days is simple: magic. This lens is so versatile, the images so sharp, at all magnifications, even out to the edges, and colors jump off the page. I can't believe I'm generating these gorgeous images; it's just magic.I happened to be in a position when I could splurge and treat myself to such an expensive canera lens, and I am totally pleased. I know I will learn a lot more on how best to use this lens, and will grow with this lens and camera, but the results so far have exceeded my expectations. My best Sony lens to date

I use my Sony alpha7R, 24mm f1.4 and 35mm f2.8 to backpack in the Sierras. These 3 pieces are very little weight. I considered buying a 3rd lens, 55mm as I felt that prime lenses are generally superior to zoom lenses. I then researched this zoom lens and was blown away by the MTF graphs which show resolution curves from the center of the lens to the outer edges. I compared these graphs to those of each of the prime lenses. The zoom lens has better MTF graphs than each of the prime lenses. The weight savings was a complete bonus as I was not going to be deciding between quality and weight. I would have better quality and lighter weight with the zoom lens.I love this lens. I always use a tripod so I don't miss the image stabilization. This is probably one of the reasons the lens is lighter than its predecessor.

Stunning Quality - Stunning Price!

I think this lens is absolutely one of the greatest lenses I have ever used. It's definitely one of the most versatile in the business, and the quality of images that I can capture on my A7iv is incredible. That being said, this thing cost as much as an A7iv! I think it all depends on the budget. If money is not an issue with your next lens, then I would recommend this one. It has a ton of on-lens features (aperture wheel, custom buttons, etc.) that make it stand apart from other cheaper options. On the flip side, I rarely find that people don't want to save money. To be quite frank, I think there are a ton of options that are just as similar as this one for much cheaper. Sure, you going to miss some fancy options and maybe even be looking at a third party company ... MoreI think this lens is absolutely one of the greatest lenses I have ever used. Hope this helps someone! Also, highly recommend B&H for all of your photography / videography needs!!!!!!!

Swapped out Sony FE 24-105 F4.0 G for 24-70 F2.8 GM II
3 July 2024

Have thought for years about trading my old workhorse Sony FE 24-105 F4.0 G for this one and finally decided to take the plunge. I have some misgivings: The 24-105 was a GREAT all-around lens and I could get to about 135 equivalent in crop-sensor mode, so I've got my fingers crossed that the extra stop (2.8 instead of 4) and the GM sharpness compared to the G will provide high enough resolution that I can crop-in for enlargements when I otherwise would have used the extra virtual zoom to highlight one face in a crowd. The fact that the new version of the 24-70 F2.8 is actually lighter and smaller than the 24-105 is an added benefit. Sony's vendor event trade-in discount helped sweeten the deal on this, too!PS: Love the folks at this company & try to give my business to them rather than to the big superstores whenever I can to support local businesses and help them continue in their tradition of excellent customer service.
