This lens is fantastic. The bokeh is the creamiest and most pleasing I’ve seen so far on the Sony emount with silky smooth transitions from unsharp to sharp portions. For reference I own the following lenses with my Sony a7rV body: sigma 35mm dg dn f1.4, Sony 70-200gmii, Sony 24-70gmii, and the sigma 105mm dg dn art macro. This 50mm lens stands out from the rest of my excellent lenses by offering gorgeous bokeh and extremely sharp images even when wide open. While I love my sigma 35mm f1.4 this 50mm f1.2 out performs it in every way with substantially sharper images at both f1.2 snd f1.4, faster autofocus, more pleasing bokeh and a more compelling focal length for closer portraits and headshots. So if you are into pulling focus on videos - you will need to deal with this minor limitation. This is one of my favorite Sony Lenses, I own and use almost all of the GM series, except for the Super Telephoto ones.I will soon travel to Bolivia's Uyuni Salt Flats where I will be able to test this lens for Low-Light and Astrophotography.

Incredible Glass, Well Worth the Price

Sharpest, fastest, most accurate 50mm lens I have ever used from any brand. You can use this lens at any aperture and get sharp results that will not disappoint. I was gob smacked as they say, about how sharp and clean it is at 1.2 across the frame. The most critical reviews I saw about this lens in my view show how good the lens is.Those critiques were that it was far too perfect in image quality and that the lens doesn't change character when you stop down, meaning that the only real benefit you are going to see is increasing the depth of field when you stop down. However, every other 1.2 50mm I have seen better in these regards is either way larger and heavier, doesn't have auto focus or the AF is not nearly is fast/accurate, or the IQ isn't as good. So its basically a trade off here.I would say that unless there is some revolutionary change in lens design that happens soon, you will enjoy this lens for a very long time without the need to upgrade when a version 2 or even version 3 come about.

Incredible performance at infinity...simply the best 24-70 2.8 for Sony.
1 March 2023

I got the chance to test out this lens versus the famous Sigma 24-70 2.8 DG DN on my a7rV. Shot side by side with the same scene, same settings, focused in same areas the GM II was consistently doing better than the sigma. It was especially noticeable when shooting wide open. The GM II was displaying better micro contrast, resolving better than the sigma in the center and corners. This was more noticable when shooting distant objects, focused at infinity which I often do for landscapes or at hyperfocal.Colors wise the sony render more on neutral side where the sigma is more on warmer side. Is the GM II 2x better than the sigma for the price? That's for you to decide. Is the GM II 2x better than the sigma for the price? That's for you to decide. Maybe not but overall what you are paying for here is the AF/ergonimics/size/weight and great optics. To me the sigma has annoyed me the past with missing focus during critical moments during events which caused me having to reshoot but missing the better moment. Also please take into consideration sample variation because I had to go through TWO copies of the GM II to get this excellent one which is NOT FUN. Copy variation plagues the 24-70 zoom lenses in particular as they are difficult to design and have different tolerances. I was not happy with my two previous copies as they were softer on the left side of the frame even stopped down at most FL which was not OK. I had the same experience when I got my sony 12-24 GM lens. I really wish this wasn't the same case in 2023 but here we are.Still highly recommend this lens if you can afford it and want the best AF especially.

The 24mm focal length is incredibly versatile, allowing me to capture wide-angle landscapes, immersive street scenes, and intimate portraits with equal finesse. Shooting wide open at F1.4 is a revelation; it's like painting with light. The centre sharpness is stunning, and the lens maintains impeccable clarity from corner to corner. Chromatic aberrations and distortion are virtually non-existent, even when pushing the limits of the wide aperture.Bokeh (5/5):One of the standout features of this lens is its ability to produce dreamy, ethereal backgrounds with that mesmerizing creamy bokeh. It's a true artist's tool, turning everyday scenes into works of art. Portraits are especially enchanting, with the lens effortlessly isolating the subject and rendering backgrounds into a beautiful blur.Autofocus (4/5):While the autofocus is fast and accurate, it's not the absolute fastest in Sony's line-up. However, it's more than sufficient for the vast majority of shooting situations. The inclusion of a customizable focus hold button adds a level of control that I've come to appreciate in various scenarios.Versatility (5/5):The 24mm F1.4 G-Master is a versatile powerhouse. From sweeping landscapes to candid street photography and intimate environmental portraits, it excels across the board. Its compact size and relatively light weight make it a joy to carry, perfect for travel and on-the-go shooting. Conclusion:In the world of prime lenses, the Sony Full Frame E-Mount 24mm F1.4 G-Master Lens stands out as an engineering marvel and a true masterpiece. Its combination of impeccable build quality, exceptional optical performance, enchanting bokeh, and versatility make it a must-have for any serious photographer. While it comes at a premium price, the results it delivers are worth every investment for those who demand excellence in their photography. This lens has unlocked new creative possibilities for me, and I can't recommend it enough to fellow photographers looking to elevate their craft. The 24mm F1.4 G-Master is not just a lens; it's a dream realized.

My best Sony lens to date

I use my Sony alpha7R, 24mm f1.4 and 35mm f2.8 to backpack in the Sierras. These 3 pieces are very little weight. I considered buying a 3rd lens, 55mm as I felt that prime lenses are generally superior to zoom lenses. I then researched this zoom lens and was blown away by the MTF graphs which show resolution curves from the center of the lens to the outer edges. I compared these graphs to those of each of the prime lenses. The zoom lens has better MTF graphs than each of the prime lenses. The weight savings was a complete bonus as I was not going to be deciding between quality and weight. I would have better quality and lighter weight with the zoom lens.I love this lens. I always use a tripod so I don't miss the image stabilization. This is probably one of the reasons the lens is lighter than its predecessor.

Nearly the best but......

Near Perfect but let down by Sony camera’s limitation.I only had this lens for more than 2 weeks. I have been testing this lens ever since I received this.In a short test period, I would say this lens performance is good in areas:1.Wide end image quality: Good.2.Tele end image quality: Good (but pay attention to shutter speed to reduce blurring due to shake).3.AF acquisition and final focus result: Good (there is slight focus breathing when you change focal length and re-focus).4.Handling: Good, balances well on camera (I use A1).The only area I’m a little critical is non-OIS in lens. The Sony camera I use is the A1 and it has IBIS but it’s certainly not that effective in the Tele end. I must increase the shutter speed to minimize shake, and this ... MoreNear Perfect but let down by Sony camera’s limitation.I only had this lens for more than 2 weeks. Sony should either improve the cameras (A1) IBIS effective stops or include OIS in lens. The Focus breathing issue might not be an issue if you have newer released Sony cameras after A1 release. The new cameras have focus breathing compensation. Sony should improve/add this in A1 or build lens with better focus breathing handling. But from an Image quality point, the G2 is certainly better (not a huge amount but slightly) than other 24-70mm F2.8 lens.

When you can only choose 1... This is it!!

This lens is the one - the one you take if you can only take one!! With a focal range wide enough that you can shoot large vistas, or groups of people/vehicles & telephoto enough that you can totally isolate an object and have nice compression. All around the most versatile high-quality lens in my line-up. If I'm going on a hike, and want to enjoy it in a minimalistic fashion, I'm very comfortable with just this one lens slung around my body. When shooting an off-road 4x4 tour, or any event, this lens must be on me.Just recently I photographed a three-day overland event out in Sand Hollow, Utah and did not switch lenses once. I was able to do everything with the 24-70mm GM. What was cool was the speed at which I was able to go from shooting many vehicles together ... MoreThis lens is the one - the one you take if you can only take one!! I was able to do everything with the 24-70mm GM. What was cool was the speed at which I was able to go from shooting many vehicles together and then just isolating one at a time as they went over obstacles. This lens executed flawlessly and made my job easy. When in crop-sensor mode this lens becomes a 36-105mm and if you're using the Sony Alpha 7R IV body, that will result in a 26-megapixel image which is a huge benefit of combining this lens with this camera. This only adds to the versatility of this great lens which I also can be used to shoot the stars at night since the aperture is 2.8.

so far so good

I just got this and have only been doing some quick testing with it, just to play around.things I noticed:* it's heavy, I'm not sure what the standard weight is for G master lenses since this is my first 'quality' lens. but it is heavier than my Sony 85 mm 1.8*The images are crisp. taking photos at 10k iso indoors with my a7riii, at 1.4-5.6 at 10k iso looks like how my 85mm lens looks at 5.6 - f/8 at 250-500 iso.*There is a rubber lining on the lens hood that I love so I don't have to worry about bumping the glass when putting it on, or anything I put the lens hood against.* never had an aperture ring on a digital camera lens, and not sure how I feel about it yet, Right now I think I like it more than dialing it on camera. (There is an auto setting so you don't need to use this feature if you don't like it)* The glass where the lens attaches to the camera, it's going to be easy to clean, IDK why, but on my Sony 85mm there is a weird gap around the edges that is super hard to get stuff out of* The front glass lays nicely with the frame of the lens, also making it easier to clean.* The gears seem smooth, as well as the rings for the aperture and manual focus* The autofocus seems fast but I need to test more with itI will give more updates in the future as I use it, this is just right out of the box with no real testing. overall I'm happy with it right now.
