The weight is considerably noticed on days I am shooting 12 plus hours. The response on the focus and manual mechanics is noticeable and critically better when I needed it. Image quality might not be as noticeable to some, but shooting indoors I can see eyes that look even more glassy than what My First Gen could do.The minimum auto focus was a big shift and there seems to be a moment of hesitation before it comes through and grabs a subject, but it is a huge improvement from the first gen lens.The most noticeable difference though was in it's overall performance when shootung a burst. It is so smooth and seamless on full burst, that i wasn't certain if I landed the shots until I reviewed the card.If you are on the fence about upgrading and your First Gen Sony GM 70 - 200mm lens is your primary I strongly recommend the investment. I also recommend buying from Best Buy, their staff are experts in customer care, and with the Totatech membership you get two year protection automatically. When you are buying professional equipment, it quickly pays for itself.

Recently rented this lens along with a 2x TC from pictureline. And needless to say after taking it for a test drive there was no going back. I used it on an A9 To compare it against my current 100-400mm GM. After comparing them it was an easy decision for me to go with the 70-200 with TC over the 100-400. The main thing that was the main difference for me was with the short throw zoom and internal focusing. The 100-400 is a great lens but with it being a pumper that extends it was just a lot more work to accomplish the same results. Plus the weight savings over the a9 100-400 combo was another bonus. As for image quality I didn’t notice any real world significant difference between the 70-200 2x Tc and the 100-400. It is a pricey lens but if you want the absolute ... I have been wanting the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM for quite some time and have been researching the difference between original lens and the OSS II to try and gauge if the price difference could be justified.I haven't got the original one, but do have the 100-400 GM and 200-600 G and I am very impressed with those lens, so I do have experience with the GM/G range.The reviews for the original 70-200 GM are very good... but when comparing the physical differences (weight, switches, aperture ring) and my research on the OSS II version, swayed me to opt for the more expensive OSS II lens - overall decision was based on weight, aperture ring on lens and the DMF switch on the lens.In summary... absolutely love the FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II ... is it worth the extra money ... But this new 2nd edition is significantly lighter, phenomenal image quality across the zoom and f-stop range, and the added features are a bonus. The auto-focus is fast and accurate which is critical for the type of photography and video work I do. The image qualify is so good, I replaced 3 other lenses with this single lens (Sony 70-200 F4 G plus 85mm and 135mm prime lenses). The aperture ring comes in handy for event photography where I often shoot/experiment with multiple different settings for each subject I photograph. This lens is expensive, but this lens replaced 3 other lenses and I sold the other lenses to cover 1/2 the cost of this lens. Faster than f2.8 would be ... Amazing lens! I film events such as weddings and take photos too. I own the first generation and the upgrade is definitely significant in many ways that makes shooting easier. The first generation would hunt focus sometimes especially when you're in an environment where lighting isn't ideal. I have not experienced this with this Mark II. Also the weight difference is huge. You may think 30% isn't as much but when I was using the first generation, my hands and arms would fatigue after an hour. Not with this new version! The stabilization also improved! I have filmed using this lens hand held and combined with my Sony a7s III IBIS, the footage always comes out steady and no micro jitters! Spend more on the newer version and you will not regret it.

The bokeh this lens produces is something beautiful, it even has an artistic look to it.Overall build quality:Very good, solid, and extremely light. It might have a "plastic" feeling to it, but I believe nowadays Sony and many other brands are developing their lenses with good quality weight saving materials.The focus and zoom ring have a thin non-sticky rubber, which I like better compared to other brands. The lens hood is beautiful, well constructed and feels like a high-quality product. No complaints with the aluminum collar as well.The "white" finish might be more difficult to maintain compared to a black finish, but it also has a big benefit by reflecting sunlight and improving heat dissipation.The focus and zoom ring are just perfect in my opinion. Well located, smooth, quick, and accurate. Also, the aperture ring is solid and very well designed with the lock and the click On-Off feature.Dust and Moisture-Resistant Construction:I've tested this lens in different " normal" conditions, (not extreme) light rain, humid and hot outdoors. So far, the lens has performed extremely well. One thing a have notice, is that it has a relative thin rubber seal around the metal mount compared to Nikon's Z series lenses (thinker and robust). Not quite sure this really matters as long as it works.Size:Small and compact compared to other 70-200mm f2.8. The size is just perfect, great to hold and great to use. The small size of this zoom lens is something to admire. It saves a lot of space in the backpack. Colleagues (and I) usually have a hard time believing how small and light this lens is.Weight:Extremely light, so light is hard to believe. I've used this lens in different assignments, non-stop for several hours and I have never complained about it. Compared to other internal zoom lenses, this one is just a joy to use. Perfect for hiking and long assignments.Focus mechanism:This lens is lighting fast, autofocus is extremely fast and 100% silent. The four XD linear motors are just superb. Great for either video or stills. Focus is almost if not instant. The only thing I would mention, is that sometimes using AF you might notice a slight "pulse". But I'm pretty sure this is a camera AF topic and not a lens issue.Manual focus is great. The Linear Manual Focus Response is a joy to use. The focus ring is smooth, extremely responsive, and accurate.Optical Steady Shot Image Stabilization:I don't own other 70-200 2.8 to compare it with. But I say it's pretty good. I've heard Nikon's Z series system is better but is something I can't confirm. The lens has 3 OSS modes and an On-Off button in the lens panel. I find this very useful but sometimes I can't notice a big difference between one mode and the other."Weird" sound when is turn off by moving elements:Nothing to worry about (in my opinion). This is normal in the new Sony focus mechanism; the element is "floating" in the rails, and this might slightly move back a forth when the lens is turned off.Weaknesses:So far, I'll say the only weakness I've came to realize is the price. I consider this lens a bit expensive compared to Nikon's Z ($2,396.95) and Canon's RF ($2,599.00) series with an applied discount. You can get these two lenses with significant discounts that will save you significant dollars.Does the light weight, small size, and amazing focus mechanism enough to justify the price? Sometimes it feels like it does and sometimes not. But this lens could definitely be more competitive and attractive with a good discount and/or a similar price as the other two brands.

There is not enough good things one can say about this lens. The lighter smaller package is a huge bonus that many landscape and event photographers will appreciate. The first thing I recommend you do is get yourself a better arca compatible foot to be able to mind it much easier.This is one of those lenses that can win over anyone to the sony system. I was glad I had a telephoto zoom as I captured some photos I would not have gotten with my other lenses. Since then, I’ve taken it with me and looked for reasons to use it to give a different perspective compared to wider lenses.After about five months, I’ve had no issues or complaints about this lens. It has been worth it for me, even with the steep price. I now prefer to wait to save up for native glass if it offers high image quality and fast focusing.
