This is by far the sharpest and best 85mm I’ve ever shot with. I previously shot Nikon and had the Nikkor 85mm F/1.4 which was a good lens and took very nice portraits. The only issue was shooting wide open at F/1.4 it would render beautiful bokeh, however it wasn’t sharp on my subject. Generally speaking, the most fixed lenses are sharpest two stops up.The difference in the Sony 85mm is that I get tack sharp focus on my subject shooting wide open at F/1.4 with the creamiest background imaginable. The bokeh is unbelievable with rounded shapes of light, not the cats eye shapes you see on many other fast lenses are a fixed focal length. This is an unbelievable lens. If you are a working professional portrait or wedding photographer, then this is a lense you must have in your bag. It makes people jump out of the background almost looking three dimensional. If you need a fixed portrait lense that will not sacrifice sharpness at wide open aperature in exchange for beautiful bokeh, then you must have this lens.

It is one of the sharpest lenses that you can get in the market, is really great, Perfect!!! but I work most on studio with monolights and normally use F5,6 or more for catalogues or some fashion pictures that requires more detail on clothes or something like that . the problem is. if you step down F4 or more the AF on the A7RII is horrible. A lot of missed focus images You just think that Af locked in the right place, where you locked it , but not, the picture is out of focus. 30-40% unusable images, the AF starts to search and just doesn't work. Same thing with other FE lenses that are great in ambient light as almost all test are made, but in studio with close apertures, a big big problem . Same with FE 24-70 F2.8GM, FE 55F1.8 Z, FE70-200G F4, and I think it is ... MoreIt is one of the sharpest lenses that you can get in the market, is really great, Perfect!!! but I work most on studio with monolights and normally use F5,6 or more for catalogues or some fashion pictures that requires more detail on clothes or something like that . the problem is. if you step down F4 or more the AF on the A7RII is horrible. The thing is that I prefer to shoot with the old A mount with converters because works better that new ones, Never miss focus with A mount in A7RII. I made a little research, and happens to other studio photographers, it is not my camera, it is the way that new AF works and maybe Sony can fix it with a Firmware update, I hope. I think that with the right software or camera this can be the best lens in the world, but for me and my work , just three stars for the AF issue and great pictures rejected for bad focus. My clients are thinking that I'm getting blind because that never happened to me before. I don't know if maybe with an special setting in my camera the problem disappears, but believe me I tried everything. AF S, AF C, AF, A , focus priority settings, Turn on setting effect and off , Turn off phase detection and every combination on AF settings and the problem persist. Be aware of this system if you are gonna use it in studio I already spent thousands and thousands and just don't know what i'm going to do.

I was super nervous at first to rent a completely new body and lens. I decided to jump in and if it didn’t work, it didn’t work. Amazingly this has been the best experience I could’ve asked for. The quality of the rentals are great! The length of time and the price was great! I loved that they do in-depth to make sure you’re comfortable and will double verify you to be safe.

This is the lens I have been waiting years for. The first gen was too slow and antiquated for what I needed. The Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN is a fine lens, but has a much yellower color rendering than the G Master lineup. This made color matching with the 35mm GM in outdoor shoots very difficult at times. This new 85mm color matches perfectly, is reasonably sized, quick, and great optically. The only downside I can see so far is the cost.
Overall experience was great. Not a complete fan of how they need more information on your work if you’re a first time buyer. I was told Gmail, Yahoo, etc. doesn’t necessarily work for them as proof and work emails are better if possible, but there should be a line where work/life balance is there. At least in my case. They did understand why I did not want to give out my work email and continued to work with me and I appreciated that.My order was then shipped, it came in a box and inside was a camera lockbox, a lens carrier and the lens was wrapped in foam. Perfect condition!
The new Sony form factor, smaller, lighter, faster is front and center with this lens. Its auto focusing is fast, accurate and silent. The edge to edge sharpness of this lens cannot be over stated, yet it renders great bokeh and pleasing focus drop off when pushed wide open. For many, and rightly so, this is the go to portrait lens. However, I have had great success shooting this for travel, street (yes street) and landscapes. Its size, and weight make it a very flexible lens- fast enough to keep up with my A1 and comfortable enough mounted on my A7Rc. The lens is not cheap but I have found the flexibility and results help justify the price.
Yes, I realize the newest sexiest Sony 85mm has just dropped, but the OG can still bring it! For the pro work: is a fantastic portrait lens. Is my favorite lens for b-cam on video interviews. For the fun stuff: lets just say my dog pics on Reddit and the 'gram just got a major upgrade! Can't wait to find new stuff to shoot with this!
I've been on the fence about taking the leap from DSLR to mirrorless and with a family wedding on the horizon I made the decision to purchase a Sony a7R iv with the FE 85mm f1.4 GM lens. Mind you this is after decades of shooting with Minolta and Sony a glass, including the Sonnar 85mm f/1.4 Zeiss lens which is a superb lens in its own right. With less than an hour of familiarization with the new a7Riv I went out and shot about a dozen images in aperture priority and full auto. The lens was positively amazing and a quantum leap beyond the DSLR / a glass setup I've been using with great confidence for a decade. First thing I noticed was how fast it focused, though I will need to work on learning how to maximize use of the various autofocus settings on the ... MoreI've been on the fence about taking the leap from DSLR to mirrorless and with a family wedding on the horizon I made the decision to purchase a Sony a7R iv with the FE 85mm f1.4 GM lens. First thing I noticed was how fast it focused, though I will need to work on learning how to maximize use of the various autofocus settings on the camera.Color is amazing and the bokeh at f1.4 is extraordinary. Image quality is superb across the full aperture range with no noticable distortion or vignetting. Honestly, next to the 135mm f1.8, this may be one of the best overall portrait lenses Sony has ever produced. Coupled with the a7Riv, with it's super high resolution and a mid to low ISO setting at f1.4, I was able to crop a head on photo of a horse in the pasture to point where it was possible to see the individual strands of hair in her mane in fine detail. Positively amazing. Is it worth the price? For a professional or serious amateur who is looking for the very best, the answer is YES.
I first bought this lens because I got a discount and then I was still waiting for my camera to go with it. My A7 IV finally arrived so I could take the lens for a test drive. It is fair to say that this is the oldest in the GMaster series of Sony lenses, therefore its focus speed is not the fastest and it's quite loud (but that's compared to other Sony lenses, it's not all that noisy). The image rendition and sharpness is still excellent, not to mention its beautiful colour rendition which is typical for all the GMaster lenses. It's a great feature because if you choose to use several GMaster lenses in a photoshoot, there would hardly be any difference in colours among them. I also have to appreciate its bokeh. Yes, I admit that I'm crazy about bokeh when shooting portraits. For this reason I appreciate that the lens is f/1.4. The image is sharp even wide open, so no problem here. I also appreciate 11 aperture blades that create the creaminess of the bokeh. To summerize, I don't regret getting this lens by any means. For me it was a new impulse to enjoy the 85mm focal length once again.
I bought this lens along with my A7 Mark II something like 8 years ago and to this day this is my goto lens with my A7 Mark IV. I’m not sure I will ever find a better lens than this one and I’m saying that owning multiple GMaster lenses!! Sony really out did themselves and made something special with this one!! For beginners…. I can’t recommend this as your first lens but should definitely be your second or maybe third addition to your arsenal. First lens should be a 24mm-70mm lens or a 70-200mm lens those are both pretty well rounded lenses.
