This is the lens I have been waiting years for. The first gen was too slow and antiquated for what I needed. The Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN is a fine lens, but has a much yellower color rendering than the G Master lineup. This made color matching with the 35mm GM in outdoor shoots very difficult at times. This new 85mm color matches perfectly, is reasonably sized, quick, and great optically. The only downside I can see so far is the cost.

Tried this with A7R5 and unlike the 85GM OG lens from years ago, the 85GM II is silent. You will only hear the AF motors for really quick pans or if you change the aperture while shooting, otherwise the AF motor won’t be in your videos.I took this short HLG3 4K video in the park and inside my office. It shows how well the AF track dog and things. The fountain portion was wide open at F1.4, all the footage was handheld. I use only a hand-strap.Imagine how much smoother with a monopod or video sticks. If this sample is not already in Dolby Vision for your iPhones, Androids, or large HDR screens, please wait another day. Thanks for watching.https://youtu.be/qo3gEj5RGg4?si=HMm1uaJhbXoaxVy0

Oh my gosh. I cannot say enough great things about this lens! Sony has minimized the focus breathing and slow AF for this lens rendition and I am in love.I had their previous version and although it was one of the sharpest lenses I have, I was hesitant to use it because it was heavier than my other lenses. I also found myself missing shots because it was slower to focus. It's fast, super sharp and super light! And Adorama shipped SO quickly! ??

It's 600$ less at Target, compared to other stores and i thought that i am going to get a refurbished lens. However, I called customer service before buying, and they confirmed that this will be new product. I am little confident before ordering and they after getting the product, I am convinced that it is a new product and the feel for it is super new. So, i believe it is new. Pictures are super sharp!!! I recommend taking it here, as they have 1 year manufactuarer warrenty.
The new Sony form factor, smaller, lighter, faster is front and center with this lens. Its auto focusing is fast, accurate and silent. The edge to edge sharpness of this lens cannot be over stated, yet it renders great bokeh and pleasing focus drop off when pushed wide open. For many, and rightly so, this is the go to portrait lens. However, I have had great success shooting this for travel, street (yes street) and landscapes. Its size, and weight make it a very flexible lens- fast enough to keep up with my A1 and comfortable enough mounted on my A7Rc. The lens is not cheap but I have found the flexibility and results help justify the price.
I've been on the fence about taking the leap from DSLR to mirrorless and with a family wedding on the horizon I made the decision to purchase a Sony a7R iv with the FE 85mm f1.4 GM lens. Mind you this is after decades of shooting with Minolta and Sony a glass, including the Sonnar 85mm f/1.4 Zeiss lens which is a superb lens in its own right. With less than an hour of familiarization with the new a7Riv I went out and shot about a dozen images in aperture priority and full auto. The lens was positively amazing and a quantum leap beyond the DSLR / a glass setup I've been using with great confidence for a decade. First thing I noticed was how fast it focused, though I will need to work on learning how to maximize use of the various autofocus settings on the ... MoreI've been on the fence about taking the leap from DSLR to mirrorless and with a family wedding on the horizon I made the decision to purchase a Sony a7R iv with the FE 85mm f1.4 GM lens. First thing I noticed was how fast it focused, though I will need to work on learning how to maximize use of the various autofocus settings on the camera.Color is amazing and the bokeh at f1.4 is extraordinary. Image quality is superb across the full aperture range with no noticable distortion or vignetting. Honestly, next to the 135mm f1.8, this may be one of the best overall portrait lenses Sony has ever produced. Coupled with the a7Riv, with it's super high resolution and a mid to low ISO setting at f1.4, I was able to crop a head on photo of a horse in the pasture to point where it was possible to see the individual strands of hair in her mane in fine detail. Positively amazing. Is it worth the price? For a professional or serious amateur who is looking for the very best, the answer is YES.
As a portrait photographer here in Los Angeles, I’ve tried several 85mm options over the years, including the previous GM version and the 1.8 G lens. While both had their merits, I often found the older GM’s focus speed too slow and the 1.8 G lacking in color character.I was excited to get the new Sony 85mm GM, and I’m seriously impressed. The build quality is incredible of course, aligning perfectly with the rest of my GM lenses, and the focusing speed is a huge improvement. The sharpness and color rendition are beautiful, bringing out the depth and personality I need for studio or on-location portraits. So far, it’s shaping up to be an essential tool in my portrait kit and I can’t wait to do more tests with it in the coming days. I have been waiting for years to get this lens.I shoot 75% video and 25% stills. I think this is the sharpest lens if not up there. Maybe the only contender is the Sony 90mm macro. The older 85mm 1.4 didn't do so well for video focus. Shooting still sit = It was great.I shot video at 1.4. I started with a tight head shot. I pulled slowly to a full torso. This lens kept up. Wow! Sony delivered! Everything I was hoping for with focus. The quality at 4k 60fps is outstanding.
My experience in purchasing Sony cameras and lenses with Best Buy has been great. Furthermore, Best Buy offer GREAT 0% finance options that would allow you to build your lens arsenal in no time and at great terms. In a new launch there will always be hickups. Expect delays. True that the Sony 85mm F1.4 II is a great improved lens .. but if I am a professional photographer i have many similar options in my Lens arsenal . I would not lose a contract because the lens did nit arrive… PLEASE... I would have used an alternate lenses. As we all have .. ask for a 10% discount or ask for a 24 month vs 12 mo 0% finance … enjoy the lens .. its is GREAT but there will alwaus be a better or NEW one. Add to this total tech and get 2 year full warranty (includes accidental damage) ... MoreMy experience in purchasing Sony cameras and lenses with Best Buy has been great. This review is for Best Buy. I pre-ordered this lens with Best Buy because they told me that it would arrive on the same day of launch. Not only did they send it late, but now the stipulated late delivery day didn't arrive either and neither they nor UPS know where the package is. The next step they offer me is an investigation and longer time to receive the lens if I receive it. Thanks to the inefficiency of Best Buy I lost some projects that I had to do with this lens specifically. My recommendation is that if you depend on a pre-order product, look to buy it anywhere other than Best Buy. They definitely don't have any more business on my part.
