Set up was pretty straightforward. Using the different media functions is a little harder to grasp but this may be early days. Connecting to the TV seems to work fine but Alexa Bluetooth link seems to give out odd results. Sometimes the music doesn't play - this MAY be a present issue with Alexa App rather than the Sony Bluetooth. It's been a while since I've used 5.1 and haven't yet found THAT movie that really shows it off (or maybe it's just more subtle now)Only other issue is that when I connect, after I've linked, I then have to press the Mute button on the remote to 'unmute'The sounds however are perfect and a nice set up, FINALLY having an affordable system with minimum wires to connect.Would be 5 stars but it's 4 because of the connection issues I've had.

As much as I’d hate to say it, for the most part all the one star reviews are true. Bought a 75” tv and got myself what I thought was a decent 5.1 system. But boy was I wrong. I didn’t look at the reviews since they tend to be misleading but in this case they’re spot on. Very muffled, the tv speakers are better. No Bass during movies, you have to put the volume above 50% to hear the smaller speakers.Quality of the speakers themselves is really cheap, and don’t get me started with the remote. Also not “Wireless” lolReturning them ASAP

And all backed up by the rumble from the sub, which is clear and responsive, and handles deep sounds effortlessly, being able to feel the rumble, as well as hearing it is incredible. All in all I would thoroughly recommend this speaker system, setup was easy, and along with clear instructions on the Sony website and setup manual, it didn't take long to get the sound I wanted.Watching a movie is so immersive, and is a vast improvement from my old system, along with the massive power levels it can be used to pump music over big distances, 600w output is probably not necessary, but is nice. The ability to adjust the output to rear speakers to match distance from listening position is easy to get the sound balanced.Arc , earc, works flawlessly, and means I don't need the remote to hand all the time, as it switches on and off with the tv.my only comments for Sony would be to make it so the standby time could be adjusted, rather than just on or off, the time is fairly short before it powers off, if you pause what you are watching for a period of time, it goes into standby, it will not automatically come back on when the program is resumed, at which point you will need to switch it back on using the remote, I have switched my automatic standby off, it still goes on and off with the tv, but will remain on while the program is in standby. And the other comment would be to supply either as an option, or in the kit extention leads for the rear speakers, I have a power supply nearer one side than the other, so the cable is too long one side, and very short the other side, obviously adapting the cables by shortening one and adding it to the other would fix the problem, but would also invalidate the warranty, when asked my reply from Sony, was not to use after market cables as this would invalidate the warranty, and cutting the cables would also invalidate the warranty, so catch 22, I expect I will ask the question again and see if I get an answer which relates to the original problem, I didn't ask about after market cables, but did they do an extension cable.Other than these minor issues I am more than happy with my purchase, my old system was adapted to fit the room, and wire extended, but had push fit connections on the speakers, so I purchased a roll of high grade speaker cable and replaced them.

I have bought lots of Sony products over the years ..... this was a big mistake.I have an LG SH3B 2.1 soundbar, wanted to upgrade to 5.1, neat and compact ...Arrived next day from Sony, unpacked, looked great, easy to set up that's where my joy ended !The 3 ch sound bar is cheap n nasty, sound is thin and you have to crank it to get any volume, then the distortion is evident. The sub has as much power as a wet lettuce. I thought i'll give it the benefit of the doubt, but alas, it is pants !!! My LG 2.1 is richer and more powerful at 300w even though it's only 2.1 !The pic is to prove i had it, and gladly sent it back !Sony Customer Care is spot on i have to say.
This 5.1 soundbar was purchased to replace a 2.1 Creative Stage soundbar.I am so disapointed in the quality, particularly when voice is concerned in movies. The sound is tinny and lacks the depth and bass I got from the Creative soundbar - which was 1/3 of the cost. And yes, i have tried all the adjustments - different sounds setting such as 'cinema', 'standard', etc... even the surround speaker setting such as distance and levels (i understand these dont broadcast the voice in 5.1 setting). The problem is that in the 5.1 input, only the centre speaker is used at some points and the speaker is very weak. I have also got the sub woofer set at max +12 - and it does not match the Creative Stage it replaced. As another reviewer highlighted, this system is missing ... I have also got the sub woofer set at max +12 - and it does not match the Creative Stage it replaced. As another reviewer highlighted, this system is missing indepentent bass and treble settings.I have found a way around it - by switching the TV output from 'multi channel' (i.e. 5.1) to 'stereo' only (i.e. 2 channel) - and selecting 'multi-speaker' setting to on (with this setting, when a 2 channel input is detected, the HT-S40R replicates the left and right on the rear speakers). This way, the vocals in a movie or TV prgram has something similar to the bass and depth i was used to from the Creative soundbar - but i have obviously lost the 5 channel surround sound. Very disapointed.Pretty much all i ahve gained from the £80 creative stage 2.1 soundbar it replaced is the wireless rear speakers - but just repliating the left / right channel in stereo mode. It was the wireless rear speaers and cost that drew me to this product - i shoud have known it would not be good for the price. And i am still not convinced it sounds any better than the Creative cheap soundbar.Come on Sony, this is poor. I was expecting so much more. And please dont reply with any comments about using the buttons for different sound modes or adjusting the subwoofer volume, that would be rubbing salt in the wound. I have been through every setting - even checked i had the latest firmware...(and i have a HDMI 2.0 with Ethernet cable using HDMI ARC - which works fine by the way with my Phillips TV)
My first Sony product. Not disappointed, especially with the surround sound. It fills our living room and perfectly separates sounds and instruments, no matter what you're listening to.It's super easy to assemble and delivers right on point. The user and assembly manuals were very helpful and still are whenever I need a reference. The only thing that has still failed is updating it to the latest software. Everything else is 100%.NEXT UP: Getting myself a BRAVIA, 4K, or 8K, 65".
Audio seems muted and unclear. Even though it only supports dolby I expected more for the price. The dialogue is difficult to hear in movies even after adjusting settings to boost it. The rear speakers crackle sometimes even after removing any potential interference and even set to the max the rear speakers are hardly noticed. I was loyal to sony as a brand but after so many problems with my Xperia and now this I won't be buying any more sony products.
This is one great 5.1 speaker set by Sony. The rear speakers are wireless and are powered by a single wireless amp that requires it's own power cable, so it doesn't need the usual long run of speaker cables along the ceiling you usually have to deal with. The bass is loud and punchy, and the soundbar itself has clear voices from the centre channel with well defined left and right speakers audio. There is mo Dolby Atmos, but it supports the other Dolby surround formats without issue, and many Atmos movies easily get downscaled to 5.1 surround without problem. One thing you should know when using these is that you need to apply the right setting to make the most of the rear speakers. I know many reviews have said the rear speakers are silent until you watch content with surround audio, but you can adjust the settings in your TV so that the rear speakers are not wasted. On my Sony TV there is a setting for digital audio passthru for my eARC so that it has the options Auto 1, Auto 2 and PCM. Auto 1 passes all compressed audio without any adjustment to the soundbar to let the soundbar decide what to do with the audio, this means stereo audio is decoded as stereo and the rear speakers are not used by the soundbar. My TV was put to this by default, but when I switched to Auto 2 the rear speakers worked as Auto 2 only passes the surround audio to the soundbar and makes the TV mix stereo sound first before passing it to the soundbar. As a result, the rear speakers also play the standard left and right channels, which improves movies where there is low volume for speech. PCM lets the TV handle all audio mixing, which stops the surround sound working, so never select that, for me Auto 2 is the sweetspot. Your TV will have different options but have a look around your settings as it may allow your rear speakers to be used even without surround content.
As a person who has never owned a surround system before, this review is coming from a complete newbie to 5.1 surround sound systems. MoreAs a person who has never owned a surround system before, this review is coming from a complete newbie to 5.1 surround sound systems. My expectations of a professional surround sound system are relatively large numbers of speakers spread around a room, usually attached to an A/V receiver by a spaghetti of cables needing management. So has the Sony HT-S40R 5.1 surround system changed my expectations? The fact that the rear speaker assembly has no wires connecting it to the forward speaker set should give you a big clue! The HT-S40R system is so discrete it's scary and as the rear speaker amp is wall mountable means it can be effectively hidden from sight behind a sofa, for example, if required. OK so it does require two power outputs but it's totally worth it for the lack of stress from cable management.I recently purchased a Sony Bravia XH92 TV but was a little underwhelmed by its internal speaker power probably due to its table top corner placement not helping the audio project properly, this is why I decided on this surround system and I can say without a doubt, I have no more issues! Initially, when I first received the S40R system I hadn't taken into account that the rear speakers would require a set of stands to position them correctly, at the time this didn't really matter as the surround system allows you to run in effectively a 3.1 configuration by switching the rear speaker capability off. This was impressive enough on its own but once I mounted the rear speakers in place the HT-S40R became a different animal. Note that regardless of surround system, your speaker placement is very important for multichannel audio focus. So how does it sound?Well the sound is as immersive as you would expect, it is just everywhere! Movies are a totally different experience, the rear and front speakers are crystal and well defined, the subwoofer gives a beautiful low rumble (just be wary of the volume on this one), for the money, it does a fantastic job.Music is very well presented and gives a well rounded experience however you must rely on the preset music EQ to deliver on this which if you are a traditionalist or audiophile probably wouldn't fulfil your expectations. I am curious as to whether the HT-S40R would output multichannel music but that is for another time.A note about the EQing of the system, usually a lack of control over a systems EQ is a bad thing but in this case it works, Sony, as you would expect, have done a very good job of tuning the presets and it adds to the S40R's simplicity of use.My feelings on surround sound systems are they should be set and forget, it should never be about pumping out watts at huge volumes but common sense tells you the system should have enough power to fill the room, something the HT-S40R system has plenty of at 600W RMS.I must mention my only annoyance with the HT-S40R and that is the remote and this is nitpicking!! The remote is nice and small but muscle memory is a thing when you use remotes, menu buttons like up/down (left/right don't apply to this remote) should be placed centrally on usually a large round arrow pad with select in the middle, which on the remote is right where the volume up/down is instead, rewiring my brain to use this remote is an absolute nightmare because each time I stray and hit the volume up instead of menu up say, it kicks me out of the menu tree to begin all over again. First setup was definately an OMG moment with expletives.Would I recommend the Sony HT-S40R 5.1 Wireless Surround System?Comfortably YES.The HT-S40R system is a true 'all-in-one-box' solution for discrete 5.1 surround sound, pure simplicity, everything you require is in the box and no extra cabling is required apart from maybe an HDMI cable to connect via the TV's ARC but a modern TV with a bluetooth connection (like my XH92) negates that and means the HDMI connection is not required. This does mean however that the system is totally proprietary, the cables can't be switched out and are hard-wired to the speakers, the connectors for the speakers are also proprietary but this is the difference between this and way higher price points. So if you need a 'plug and play' surround system that requires minimal setup and tinkering, the Sony HT-S40R 5.1 Wireless Surround System is a great option for anyone.
This 5.1ch Home Cinema with Wireless Rear Speaker system from Sony was very simple start up to use with my TV via the provided optical cable, working first time in just a few minutes. There is a template for wall mounting the speakers, if required. This system connects easily to Bluetooth devices, following the theme of one remote to control the volume. It will also connect to an aux cable for other wired devices. There is a very small rolling display at the top of the subwoofer speaker (below a set of function buttons) to show status, volume, menu options, etc. It is maybe too small and obviously positioned on a speaker at floor level, to easily read regularly, but I have found that after "fine tuning" the speaker system there was little need to look down at it.Within the settings menu are many configuration settings that you can alter according to speaker separation, audio preferences, etc. It is well worth spending some time experimenting with these settings to get the best sound for the room.I have two TV setups in my house: I found this system worked better in a smaller 3m setup than the larger room. The volume scale is literally 1-100, taking some time to move up the range with a remote, but 100 is extremely loud with little distortion, when tested with music. But I have found a disappointing lack of higher frequencies, this being my main criticism of the sound system. The remote control is simple to use and absolutely necessary for the menu options. You can change the type of sound setup you want, like night, voice, cinema, music, etc. with a single push of a button. There is also status and input buttons that require the visual feedback from the display.Overall it is an impressive system, easy to setup and use, powerful and versatile to different inputs, but I would like more higher range sound, and maybe put the display on the sound bar... just an idea.
